PAADAL PETRA SHIVA STHALANGAL - PANDYA NAADU ( NEAR KARAIKUDI & DEVAKOTTAI )

After Completing the Dharshans of Paadal Petra Sthalangal of NADU NAADU, on 23rd and 24th  September 2011, had been to the Paadal Petra Sthalangal  of Pandya Naadu. Out of 14 Temples, I had covered 5 temples already when I was working  for M/s  SPIC, Tuticorin Fertilizer Plant. ( Thirunelveli, Kurtralam, Madurai  Aalavai, Thiruparankunram, Rameswaram ). Had been to Thiruchuzhi, but I did not gone to the temple, long back, not aware of it.

This time I had been to Three Paadal Petra Sthalangal of Pandya Naadu and Thiruvasakam Paadal Petra Sthalam , Thiruperundurai ( Aavudayar Koil) The details I gathered and the photos I had taken through my mobile are enclosed.

251/7. THIRUPUNAVAYIL
(Since I reached the temple about 7.00 o’ clock night I could not take clear day light pictures, through my mobile.)

This is the 251st Devaram Padal Petra Shiva Sthalam on the banks of river Paambaru ( Sarba nadhi ) and 7th sthalam of Pandya nadu. Thiruganasambandar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple. 

Iraivan : Sri Viruthapureeswarar, Sri Pazhampathi Nathar, Sri Mahalingeswarar.
Iraivi    : Sri Bhiruntha Nayaki, Sri Periya Nayaki.

Some of the important features of this temple are...
  1. The Moolavar gopuram is taller than the raja gopuram. 
  2. In koshtam Thirumal and Anjanayer are installed instead of Lingothbavar. Hence this temple is believed to be 3000 years old. Iraivan is called as Pazhampathi Nathar. 
  3. It was said that the temple at Tanjore was constructed by seeing this temple. To prove this the Moolavar Lingam is 9 feet high  and aavudayar is 33 feet circumference & 5.5 feet high  and komuki is 3.5 feet. 
  4. Dhakshinamoorthy is in Yoga posture of unique style. 
  5. It is believed that Worshiping Shiva in this temple is equal to worshiping of all 14 temples of Pandya naadu ( 14 Lingams are installed ). 
  6. The Vinayagar is Aakanda Vinayagar ( Aakandan – Indiran -  worshiped the lord.) 
  7. Kudavarai Kali ( aroopam ) temple is on the north east corner of the temple premises, which we can see only through a mirror.

  1. Buses available from Aavudayar Koil, Aranthangi and Thiruvadanai.
  2. Taxi to pick up and drop available from Aavudayar Koil, ( they may charge Rs 600.00 to Rs 1000. ( The road is toooooo  bad. )

253/9. THIRU AADANAI(Now this place is called Thiruvadanai.) 
This is the 253rd Devaram Padal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 9th  Sthalam in Pandya naadu. Thiruganasambandar has sung hymns in praise of lord Shiva of this temple. 

Iraivan: Sri Aathirathneswarar, Sri Ayagajaeswarar
Iraivi:    Sri Snehavalli, Sri Anbayeravalli.

Some of the important features of this temple are...
  1. Due to curse of Thurvasa muni, Varunan’s son Vaaruni has got the Elephant body with goat's head ( ஆடு + ஆனை = ஆடானை ). By worshiping Lord Shiva of this temple the curse was removed and he got the original shape. Hence this place is called as Thiruaadanai. 
  2. Moolavar Lingam is made out of Blue Rathinam. It is believed that Suryan installed and worshiped the moolavar. 
  3. Sannadhi for Vinayagar, Murugan, Somaskandhar, Lakshmi and Sabamandapam. 
  4. Ambal is in a separate sannadhi in chathurpuja posture facing east
  5. Corridor is beautifully constructed  with rock pillars with many sculptures. 
  6. The Raja gopuram is 130 feet high with nine tiers. 
  7. The temple is under the control of Ramanathapuram Rajah’s family.

  1. Buses from Karaikudi ( 20 KM ), Devakottai ( 10 KM) to Thondi passes through this place Thiruvadanai. 
  2. Buses from Trichy, Madurai to Thondi passes through Thiruvaadanai.

254/16. THIRUKAANAPPEAR ( THIRUKAANAPPERUR)  
This place is now called as Kalayar Koil )
This is the 254th Devaram Padal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 10th  sthalam in Pandya nadu. Thiruganasambandar & Sundarar has sung hymns in praise of lord shiva of this temple.

Some of the important features of this temple are....
  1. In Sundarar’s dream, when was at Thiruchuzhi,  Lord Shiva came in  the form of Kalai maadu with sendu in one hand and Chuzhi on the forehead and said he is in Kanappear. Since Iraivan came in the form of Kaalai maadu the place is called as Kaalayar Koil. 
  2. There are three Shiva Sannadhi with two Raja gopuram in a single premises. 
  3. The sanctum sanctorium is  few feet below the ground level. 
  4. The center  Kaaleeswarar is old and Paadal Petra swayambu lingam. 
  5. From the tallest gopuram we can see the Madurai temple Gopurams. There is a local kummi -கும்மி song available for this Rajagopuram.  "மதுரை கோபுரம் தெரியக் கட்டிய  மருதுபாண்டியன்   வாராண்டி " )
  6. During Britisher's period Maruthu Pandiyar saved the gopuram by surrendering himself and latter he was killed by the Britishers. 
  7. Godeses Kaali worshiped Shiva and turned to sornam ( Gold colour ) from black.

  2. On the train route get down at Naattarasan Kottai on the Chennai to Rameswararm and Trichy to Manamadurai.

THIRU PERUNDURAI (AAVUDAYAR KOIL )

This is one of the Thiruvasakam, by Manikkavasakar Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam.   

Iraivan : Sri Aathmanatheswarar, Sri Guruswamy, Sri Paramaswamy, Sri Aathmanathar
Iraivi    : Sri Yogambal.

Some of the important features of this temple are....
  1. This temple is famous for its sculpture and architecture. Kodungai of the mandapams were made in a single stone shaped to small thickness and joined together. ( even to day the sculpters used to enter in an agreement for constructing anew temple, “ Kodungaikal will not be similar to Aavudayar Koil “). Bullet marks by the britshers can also be seen. 
  2. It is amazing to see the stone statues on the pillars and the stone chains hanging from the roof. There is no Nandhi, Kodimaram and Palipeedam.
  3. In this temple both Iraivan and Iraivi  has no idols, since both are in arropam state.
  4. The naivethiyam is boiled rice satham kept on the stone slab in front of the Aavudayar. Only steam from the satham is the naivethyam.
  5. The vegetables offered in the temple are Bitter guard, Keerai, which are not offered in any other temples. ( To teach vedam to Anthanar children, Iraivan was offered keerai, bitter guard by the Anthanars).  
  6. Only Aaavudai is in the temple, the place is called as Aavudayar Koil.
  7. The Raja Gopuram is of seven tiers, which is visible from a long distance.
  8. Sthala viruksham is Kurantha Maram, under which Lord taught Manikkavasakar. The specialty of the tree leaves is, they have three different smells.

PAADAL PETRA SHIVA STHALANGAL - NADU NAADU ( NEAR CUDDALORE )

20, September 2011

On 17th September 2011, went to ( last leg of Nadu Naadu Temples ) the Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalangal near Cuddalore. Really I enjoyed this trip, since I travelled  in all mode, walking to a distance of 3 Kilometers, pillion rider on the motor cycle, then on the Mahindra / TATA kutti yanai, town bus, share auto. etc. There are 4 temples near Cuddalore. With this I had completed all the 22 Paadal Petra Sthalangal of Nadu Naadu. The route I followed is as follows.

Chennai to Tindivanam ( about 2.30 Hrs by bus from Guindy )- Tindivanam to Pondy by Private bus (which goes inside the villages ( Reader/ devotees do not travel by type of transport )- Pondy to Cuddalore - Thirupathiripuliyur Paadaleeswarar Temple ( By walk from bus stand &  return to bus stand by walk- Thiruchopuram by Town bus ( Parangipettai) - got down at Thiruchopuram - Thiruchopuram to Alapakkam - (By   mahindra mini transport vehicle - From Alapakkam to Mettupalayam by Town bus - From Mettupalayam to Thiruthinai Nagar ( Theerthanagiri ) - half way by Motor cycle and half way by town bus - Therthanagiri to Mettupalayam by Mahindra Mini lorry  - from Mettupalayam to Cuddalore by Town bus- From Cuddalore to Thirumanikuzhi by Town bus and walk to about 1.5 Km by walk - From Thirumanikuzhi to Thiruvandhipuram by pillion rider on TVS mopet and Thiruvandhipuram to Cuddalore by share auto. - from Cuddalore to Chennai by bus via Tindivanam Thambaram. The private vehicles do not charged me any thing. Hence I extend my sincere thanks to those drivers to carry me to complete the dharshan yatra.

50/18. THIRUPATHIRIPULIYUR

This is 50th Devaram Padal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 18th sthalam of Nadu Naadu on the banks of river Kedilam. Thirunavukkarasar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple.

Iraivan: Sri Paadaleeswarar, Sri Shivakozhulundeesar,  Sri Karaiyearteeswarar.
Iraivan: Sri Bruhindanayagi, Sri Periyanayagi, Sri Aruvantha Nayagi.

Some of the important features of this temple are....
  1. Architecture of the temple sculptures are  very nice and beautiful.   
  2. Ambal sannathi is built separately. 
  3. Thirunakkarasu  Swamikal was thrown in to sea with stone tied on his body  by Samanars. By Gods grace Thirunavukkarasar came to shore (Kadal karai ), hence Iraivan is called as Karaiyearteeswarar). 
  4. Viyakkarapatha Munivar ( Pulikal Munivar ) worshiped in the temple hence the place  end with puliyur ( Thirupathiripuliyur ).

  1. It is centre of the new Town Cuddalore and very near to bus-stand and railway station.
  2. Frequent buses are available from  all the major cities of Tamil Naadu to Cuddalore.

38/6. THIRUCHOPURAM

This is the 38th Deavaram Padal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 6th stalam in Nadu Nadu. ThiruGanasambandar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple.  

Iraivan : Sri Mangalapureeswarar, Sri Thiruchopuranathar.
Iraivi    : Sri Thyagavalli ( Near by place is called a Thiyagavalli), Sri Velnedinganni,               Sri Sathyakshi.

Some of the important features of this temple are...
  1. Once the temple was completely submerged in the sand and latter the same was renovated by Madurai Ramalinga Yogi. 
  2. From the history after removing the sand it was observed that the lamp near the Shiva deity was burning. This shows that regular pooja was conducted by devars/ Munivars eventhough the moolavar was completely covered with sand.
  3. Epigraphs of Chozhas and Panya’s period are available in this temple. 
  4. There is no Rajagopuram and the temple is facing west.

  1. Town bus going to Parangipettai goes via Thiruchopuram.
  2. Cuddalore to Chidambaram road, get down at Alappakkam  and 2 KM from main Road.
  3. Very near to  Nagarjuna Oil refinery, which is under Construction.

37/5. THIRUTHINAI NAGAR
(Now the place is called as Theerthanagiri.) 

This is 37th Devaram Padal Petra Shiva Sthalam  and 5th Shiva Sthalam in Nadu Naadu. 

Iraivan: Sri Shivakozhuntheesar, Sri Shivalingeswarar
Iraivi: Sri Neelathakshi, Sri Oppila Nayagi, Sri Karuthadanayagi.

Some of the important features of this temple are.....
  1. As per Sivanadiyar Ramalingam Vairakannu the present name of "Theerthana giri" is a changed name  from the ancient name of "THEERTHA NAGARI" This information is from the British manual, a book of inscriptions of Madras presidency. 
  2. The name Thiru Thinai Nagar called by devotees  is from a story, which is chiseled in the form of relief available on the temple wall. The story is,  Lord Shiva in the form of Vellalar, sowed the millet Thinai and grown. Lord Shiva on the rishabha vakanam gave dharshan to the vellalars.

49/17. THIRUMANIKUZHI

This is the 49th Devaram Padal Petra Shiva Sthalam and  17th sthalam on the banks of river Kedilam in Nadu Nadu. Thiruganasambandar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple. 

Iraivan : Sri Vaamanapureeswarar, Sri Uthavinayagar, Sri Manikkavarathar
Iraivi    : Sri Ambushakshi, Sri Uthavinayagi, Sri Manikkavalli.

Some of the important features of this temple are...
  1. As per hear say  this temple is the 1st  among 1008 Shiva temples. 
  2. This is the only Shiva Sthalam, where one can have  dharshan with the help of Archakar. 
  3. It is believed that Shiva is always with Ambal and is guarded by Sivagana Beemaruthrar  ( also known as Beemangaran  printed on the front screen). Hence aarathi will be shown first to Beemarutharar to get permission and then to Shiva. After aarathi  screen will be closed. Since Shiva is always with Ambal there is no palliayarai in this temple. 
  4. It is believed that Thirumal worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple at the end of Vaamana Avathar ( to remove sin caused by killing Mabali Chakravarthy ). 
  5. Also it is believed that by worshiping Shiva in this temple will be equal to worshiping of 16 times Kasi, 3 times Thiruvannamalai and 3 times Chidambaram. 
  6. Sthala puranam is chiseled on the front entrance of sannathi.
  7. SPIC- PHARMA, cuddalore employees also participated in the lighting of main temple. Thanks to their service.

  1. Cuddalore to Panruti buse 16 & 16 are going through Thirumanikuzhi. ( 1.5  Km walk and cross the river bridge )

PAADAL PETRA SHIVA STHALANGAL - NADU NAADU ( NEAR VIRUDHACHALAM)

07, September 2011.

On 4th September 2011, went to 5 Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalangal  of Nadu Naadu near Virudhachalam. Except Virudhachalam and Pennadam, I could not get the clear idea of travelling by public transport. Hence I hired a Taxi and went to the temples. Eventhough I hired a taxi I could complete only 4 temples in the morning session.

34/2. PENNADAM

This is the 34th Devaram Padal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 2nd sthalam in Nadu Nadu. Sundarar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple.

Iraivan: Sri Sudar Kolundeesar, Sri Piralaya Kaaleeswarar
Iraivi   : Sri Aamothanambal, Sri Kadanthai nayagi , Sri Azhakiya Kathali.

Some of the important features of this temple are...
  1. Devakanniyar, Kamadenu and White elephant worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple, hence Siva of this temple is called as Pen+ Aa + dam. 
  2. The Nandhi is viewing out side the temple  to stop flood in the Vellaiaar river. 
  3. The moolasthanam is in the form of Gajabrustam construction, ie elephant in standing position and hence  this temple also called as Thoonganai Mada Koil.  
  4. Pennadam is the birth place of Kali Kamba Nayanar  and Marai Ganasambandar. Appar got the symbol of  soolam and Idabam from lord Shiva of this temple.

33/1. THIRUNELVAYIL ARATHURAI

This is the 33rd Devaram Padal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 1st sthalam in Nadu nadu on the banks of river Neevaa. Moovar Padal petra Shiva sthalam.

Iraivan : Sri Anandeeswarar, Sri Theerthapureeswarar
Iravi     : Sri Amandha Nayagi, Sri Thiripura Sundari, Sri Arathurai Nayagi.

Some of the important features of this temple are....
  1. This village is now called as Thiruvatturai.  
  2. The Nandhi’s head is up and turned to right to stop flood in the river Neevaa.  
  3. Ganasambandar has got Muthu Pallaku and Muthu Kodai (Umbrella) in this Temple
  4. The Kumbhabishekam was conducted recently

36/4. ERRUKATHAMPULIYUR.
(Now this village is called as Rajendra Pattinam which has no relation to the original name.). 

This is the 36th Devaram Padal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 4th Sthalam in Nadu Nadu. Thirugana Sambandar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple.

Iraivan : Sri Neelakandeswarar, Sri Suvethaarkkavaneswarar
Iraivi    : Sri Abeethakuja Nayagi, Sri Neelamalar kanni, Sri Neelorbalaambal.

Some of the important features of this temple are....
  1. Munivar  Viyakrapathar (Legs are Tigers leg shape) worshiped lord Shiva of this temple. There are 5 more Padal Petra sthalangal the name ending with Puliyur.  
  2. Lot of white Erruku ( Sthala  viruksham ) plants at the back of the temple. 
  3. The temple Gopuram is not maintained properly. We can see lot of weeds and plants on the Gopuram.  
  4. Ambal sannathi is on the left side, both Iraivan and Iraivi are facing the same direction.
HOW TO REACH :

  1. On the way to Virudhachalam to Sri Mushnam route via Karuvappilai Kurichi. The Village is on the main road and the temple is about a KM from the main road.
  2. 12 Km on the Jayamkondam route.

35/3. KOODALAIYARTOOR.

This is the 35th Devaram padal Petra Shiva Sthalam on the junction of rivers Vellaaru and Manimuthaaru and 3rd Sthalam in Nadu Nadu. Sundarar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple.

Iraivan: Sri Narthana Vallabeswarar, Sri Nerikkattu Nathar
Iravi    : Sri Parasakthi, Sri Ganasakthi.

Some of the important features of this temple are....
  1. On the way to Thirumdhukunram Lord Shiva in the form of  andhanar directed him the way to this temple as “ Koodalaiaartrirku vazhi ikthu “ and disappeared.
  2. The temple is under renovation and preparing for the Kumbhabishekam. 
  3. Moolavar vimanam is of two tiers. In koshtam  Dhakshinamoorthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma and Ashta buja Durgai. 
  4. There is no navagraha sannadhi and only Sanai bhagavan moortham is available.
  5. There are two Ambal Sannathis in this temple. Vibuthi is given in Sri Parasakthi Ambal Sannadhi and Kungum is given in Ganasakthi ambal sannadhi.
  6. This is a reconstructed temple after it was washed away by the flood from Manimuthaaru.

  2. 20 Km from Chidambaram to Sethyathoppu route.

41/9. THIRUMUDHUKUNDRAM
(The present name is Virudhachalam and it is a Sanskrit word. )

This is the 41st Devaram Padal Petra Shiva Sthalam and  9th sthalam in Nadu Naadu.  Moovar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple.

Iraivan.: Virutha gireeswarar, Pazhamalai Nathar
Iraivan: Viruthambigai, Periya Nayagi, Balambigai.

Some of the important features of this temple are...
  1. It is believed that departed human soul  will be soothed by Iravan and Iraivi  with the Shivaya nama mandhiram. 
  2. The temple is believed to be on the hill, of very old ( Pazhala malai ). The hill is below the present temple. 
  3. The temple is in a huge complex consisting of  5 RajaGopurams, 5 Prakarams.
  4. Ambal sannadhi is constructed separately facing east on the outer Prakaram ate North side Raja Gopram entrance. 
  5. The temple sthala virksham is Vanni Tree and the same is believed to be of older than 3000 years.
  6. Relief of 72 Bharatha Natya dance styles are available in the 16 pillar mandapam, in front of east side Rajagopuram.
  7. Ambal is in a separate temple facing east with Rajagopuram.
  8. In the Vanniadi prakaram sannadhi for Pancha Lingams, Vallaba gabnapathy, Meenakshi Chokkalaingam, Vishwanatha Lingam, Arumugar, Sahasra Lingam, Ekambra Lingam, Jambu Lingam, Annamalaiyar.
  9. On the way to Periyanayagi Amman sannadhi, sannadhi for Navagrahas, Dhandapani.
  10. In the third parakaram sannadhi for 63var, Naalvar, Vinayagar, Rishabaroodar, Yoga Dhakshinamoorthy, Sabtha mathakkal, Uruthirar, Matruraitha Vinayagar, Varuna Lingam, Mooppilayar,  Dhakshinamoorthy, Valli Devasena Subramaniyar, Vallaba Ganapathy, Chinna Pazhmalai nathar, Bindhumadhava Perumal, Mayura Murugan.
  11. In Ilamai Nayagi Amman Temple sannadhi for Gajalakshmi, Bairavar, Surya Lingam and Suryan.
  12. 72 Tamil epigraphs were traced so far and there many epigraphs available in this temple. These are  from 10th century.
