Sri Veetrirundha Perumal Temple, Thirumazhisai, Thiruvallur District, Tamil Nadu.

28th May 2017

After finishing darshan of Sri Jagannatha Perumal  at Thirumazhisai, local people guided me to  this temple also which is very old. This temple is about 500 meters from Sri Jagannatha Perumal Temple. Even-though it is claimed that the temple is very old, the antiquity was lost during renovations by fixing of tiles and concreting.

Moolavar : Sri Veetrirundha Perumal.
Thayar    : Sri Shenbagavalli

In koshtam Vishvaksenan, Vinayagar, Veetrirundha Perumal, Varadharaja Perumal, Kakkaathar, Vaishnavi. The moolavar Sri Veetrirundha Perumal is with Sridevi and Bhoodevi. It was believed that Brahma had the darshan of Ashta Lakshmis, in this temple.

As per the legend, Bhrigu and Markandeya Maharishi performed thabas  at Puri to get the blessings of Sri Mahavishnu. Mahavishnu gave dharshan hazily and shown only the half. When they asked for clear darshan, Mahavishnu told them that they could worship his full form at ‘Maheesara kshethram”. Bhrigu maharishi requested Brahma to show the place.  Lord Vishnu told to Brahma that, which place is at-least 1 grain of paddy weight  heavier than the other places is that  ‘Maheesara kshethram”.  Brahma identified the place as Thirumazhisai. Lord Vishnu with his consorts gave darshan in full form in sitting posture similar to Sri Jagannatha Perumal and ashta Lakshmi’s on his crown and by the sides  to Bhrigu and Markandeya maharishi.

Sri Jagannatha Perumal Temple / Thirumazhisai Alwar Temple, Thirumazhisai, Thiruvallur District, Tamil Nadu.

28th May 2017

Thirumazhisai Shiva and Perumal temples came to my mind when I thought of last weeks end temples visit. Even though I had been to Thirumazhisai Shiva temple, this is the first time, visiting this Sri Jagannatha Perumal temple also called as Madhya Jagannatha Perumal temple.  Lord Shiva identified this place to do a penance for Athiri, Bhrigu and Markandeya maharishis, which is slightly heavier than the other places on the earth. Visited another Perumal temple which has the similar features.

Sri Thirumazhisai Alwar, the 4th of 12 alwars,  is in a separate sannadhi in maha mandapam.   This is the birth place of  Sri Thirumazhisai Alwar. The story  goes like this. Sri Thazhuva Kuzhaindeeswarar Temple / ஸ்ரீ தழுவக்குழைந்தீஸ்வரர் / Thazhuvakuzhaindeeswarar Temple, Padappai, Kanchipuram District, Tamil Nadu.

 22nd May 2017.
This temple is about 34 km distance from my residence. After a long time rode on my Yamaha scooter to Padappai via Tambaram and Manimangalam. Did not faced much difficulty to locate the temple, which is about a KM off main road. Many hand made tiled roof old houses are there on this temple’s street, reminds the Agraharam.

Moolavar    : Sri Thazuva kuzhaindeeswarar
Consort      : Sri Kamakshi Amman.

Some of the important features of this temple are...
The temple is facing east with a 3 tier Rajagopuram.  Balipeedam, Dwajasthambam ( installed very recently )  and nandhi mandapam are immediately after the Rajagopuram. Bala Ganapathy and Balamurugan are in the passage of Rajagopuram.

The sanctum sanctorum consists of sanctum, artha mandapam and front mandapam.  On the top of the mandapam arch,  stucco image of Ambal worshiping Lord Shiva and embracing lingam.  In koshtam, Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Mahavishnu, Brahma and Durgai.

In the prakaram sannadhi for  Veerabhadra, Naalvar, Sarabeswarar, Vinayagar, two Lingas, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Chandikeswarar, Anantha Natarajar, Ambal Kamakshi ( in koshtam  Vaishnavi, Lakshmi and Saraswati ), Saneeswarar, Navagrahas, Bhairavar, Suryan and Chandran.

There are some reliefs installed on the compound wall of the temple they are, Vinayagar, Arumugar and a man worshiping posture, which are seems to be very old. The legend of this temple may be connected to Sri Ekambareswarar temple of Kanchipuram where Ambal embracing Lord Shiva.

It was told that the temple belongs to Pallava Period and there is no evidence available at the temple except there is a mention in Thevaram and it was also claimed that the temple is a Thevara vaippu sthalam, which is in question and to be explored. The temple was completely renovated.

The inscription of a fragment stone was recorded by a Heritage enthusiast Mr Sukumar. The inscription belongs to 14th Century Veerapandiyan period. From this it was understood that weaving of clothes was flourished in Padappai, next to Kanchipuram. Due to draught, the weavers started moving out of the Village. On hearing this, The Pandya King Veerapandiyan gave money  on monthly basis to settle them back and also he gave money for the new weavers. The original inscription reads as..
