27th June 2017.
At-least two times in a year I used to cross Karamadai on the way to Ooty from Coimbatore. Every time I used to think of visiting this temple, but some how I couldn’t made it. But this time when we are returning from Ooty, when I expressed my wish of visiting this Perumal and the Shiva temple my friends readily accepted and had the dharshan.
Moolavar : Sri Aranganatha Swamy
Thayar : Sri Ranganayaki
Some of the important features of this temple are...
The temple is facing with a front mandapam. After the front mandapam the Rajagopuram is of 7 tiers. Dwajasthambam, Palipedam, Dipa Sthambam and Garudalwar sannadhi are immediately after the Rajagopuram
In the outer prakaram sannadhi for Thayar, Andal, Anjaneyar and Alwars. There is a Kalyana mandapam is also in the outer prakaram. There are statues kept at the back side of the temple, the details are not known. Sthala virukasham is Karai Tree.
The moolavar is Swayambu and the head is only visible and it was told that the body of Perumal is below the ground.
The temple is originally believed to have been built during the Chola Empire during the 10-11th centuries. Thirumalai Nayak (1623-59 CE) expanded the temple during his regime and built the walls and halls in the temple. Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar (1940–1950) built a set of other halls in the temple. Ramanuja (1017–1137 CE), the expounder of Vaishnadvaita philosophy is believed to have visited the temple on his way to Melkote from Srirangam Ranganathaswamy Temple. The northern temple tower was built during 1944, while the seven-tiered 80 ft (24 m) Eastern tower was built during 2013. Some of the old halls were also renovated during 2013.
As per the legend the shepherd Kottariyar had seen the cow was milking automatically on a bush/ Ant hill, while grazing. In the process of clearing the bush/ Ant hill Lord Aranganatha Swamy appeared before the Shepherd and blessed him. On hearing this the Pattar Community built a temple.
