Jain Tirthankaras and Heritage Monuments, at Samanar Malai, Perumal Malai, Kongar Puliyankulam and Thiruparankundram / அருகர்களும், தொன்மையான சமண தடயங்களும் – சமண மலை, பெருமாள் மலை, கொங்கர் புளியங்குளம், மேலும் திருப்பரங்குன்றம், மதுரை அருகே / Madurai District, Tamil Nadu.

This month’s Ahimsa walk ( 53rd ) organised by Mr Sridharan Appandai Raj was planned for two days ( 05^th Saturday and 6^th Sunday, May 2018 ), but I quit the second day visit, due to my pre-committed program. In this ahimsa walk, it was planned to Visit Jain Tirthankaras & monuments on the Samanar malai, Perumal malai, Kongar Puliyankulam and Thiruparankundram hills around at Madurai, on the first day and Siddhar malai and Vikramangalam on the second day. Considering the climbing of hills, we, Mr Sugumaran Dhananjayan, Mr Selvamani Appandai Raj and Mrs Sasikala & Family started earlier from Chennai through a Van from Adambakkam Jain temple. Reached Madurai around 03.00 hrs and taken rest at Madurai Jain heritage centre, Melakuilkudi for about 3 Hours and started our first Visit to Samanar Malai around 06.30 hrs. It was told that this hill was renamed as Samanar malai during the period of Mr M Bakthavatchalam, the then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and the man behind was Mr Sripal.

SAMANAR MALAI

The Samanar Hill is about 3 KM from Madurai Jain Heritage Centre and place is called as Keelakuilkudi, which is about 15 KM from Madurai. An Ayyanar & Karuppanna Swamy Temple is at the foot hills ( Will be posted separately ). It was told that a Tirthankara statue is in one of the shrine worshiped as a Hindu God and could not see since the shrine was locked. Climbed through the steps chiseled on the monolithic hill rock with hand rails. Our First Stop was at Pechipallam, where 9^th century, 8 Tirthankaras in the form of bas reliefs chiseled on the Rock with a natural pond. These Tirthankaras includes Adinath, Bahubali, Parshvanath, Mahavira, Suparshvanath ( snake with 7 hood ) etc. There are 10 Vatteluttu inscriptions, found below the images, which speaks about the persons who chiseled the images.

Little above Pechipallam, had seen a base of a Jain monastery, originally called as “Maadevi Perumpalli”, a Jains learning centre named after Parantaka Veera Narayana Pandyan's wife. It was told that students in large numbers studied here from various parts of India. The Pandya King, Parantaka Veera Narayana Pandyan ( 860-900 CE ) who followed Jainism also visits frequently to this monastery. Vatteluttu inscriptions are still found on the base stone of the monastery. Mr Selvamani told that there is a broken stone Lamp mast ( Deepa Sthambam ) on the top of the hill with inscriptions. We again climbed further and find the lamp mast. To our disappointment there was a stone Lamp mast, which was erected in the recent period ie in the year 1971 but could see the old Kannada inscription.

After climbing down, we headed towards Settipoduva a place, about 500 meters from the Ayyanar & Karuppanna Swamy Temple. This site has Bas relief of Adinath, Mahavira Tirthankaras & Yakshi Ambika are in side a cave and a big size Mahavira Bas relief on the out side of the Cave. It was told that Gunasena Peradigal, a Jain monk was responsible for the carvings of these bas-reliefs. The cave might have had Jain beds and now they are covered completely with concrete. Both Settipoduvu and Pechipallam are being maintained by Archaeological survey of India ( ASI ).

அருகர்களும், சமண தடயங்களும் – சமண மலை, பெருமாள் மலை, கொங்கர் புளியங்குளம், மேலும் திருப்பரங்குன்றம், மதுரை அருகே – ஒரு அஹிம்சை நடை

இந்த மாத அஹிம்சை நடை மதுரையைச் சுற்றியுள்ள மலைகளில் இன்றும் இருக்கும் சமண தீர்தங்கரர் சிற்பங்களையும், சமணர் படுக்கைகளையும் காண 05 சனி & 06 ஞாயிறு, மே மாதம் 2018 என இரண்டு நாள் நிகழ்வாக திரு ஸ்ரீதரன் அப்பான்டைராஜ் அவர்களால் ஏற்பாடு செய்யப்பட்டு இருந்தது, சென்னையில் இருந்து பயண தூரம், அடுத்த இரண்டு நாட்கள் மலை ஏற்றம் இவற்றைக் கருத்தில் கொண்டு வெள்ளிக்கிழமை மாலை சுமார் 6.30 மணி அளவில் வழக்கம் போல ஆதம்பாக்கம் ஜீனாலயத்தில் இருந்து திரு சுகுமாரன் தனஞ்ஜயன் திரு செல்வமணி மற்றும் செளமேந்தர் & சசிகலா குடும்பத்தினருடன் கிளம்பினோம். திண்டிவனத்தில் மேலும் சில சமண சகோதரர்களை ஏற்றிக்கொண்டு மழையின் ஊடே பயணித்து அதிகாலை சுமார் மூன்று மணியளவில் மதுரை மேலகுயில்குடியில் இருக்கும் சமண பண்பாட்டு மையத்தை சென்றடைந்தோம். மூன்று மணிநேர ஓய்வுக்குப் பின்பு சுமார் 6.30 மணி அளவில் சமண மலையை நோக்கி எங்கள் பயணம் துவங்கியது.

சமணர் மலை

கீழக்குயில்குடி மலை என்பது திரு எம் பக்தவச்சலம் முதலமைச்சராக இருந்தபோது திரு ஸ்ரீபால் அவர்கள் முயற்ச்சியால் “சமண மலை” என்று பெயர் மாற்றம் செய்யப்பட்டது என்று திரு செல்வமணி கூறினார். மலையின் அடிவாரத்தில் கருப்பன்னசுவாமி மற்றும் அய்யானார் கோவிலில் ஒரு தீர்தங்கரரை இந்து கடவுளாக வணங்குகின்றனர் என்றும் கூறினர். கோவில் பூட்டப்பட்டு இருந்ததால் காண இயலவில்லை. மலையேற்றம் பாறையில் வெட்டிய படிகள் வழியே சென்றது. தொல்லியல்துறை சார்பாக பிடித்து ஏற கைபிடி உருளைகளைப் பொருத்தி இருந்தனர். எங்கள் முதல் இலக்கான 8 தீர்தங்கரர் இருக்கும் பேச்சிப்பள்ளம் என்ற இடத்தை முதலில் அடைந்தோம். பார்சுவநாதர், பாகுபலி, மகாவீரர் மற்றும் பல தீர்த்தங்கரர் சிற்பங்கள் பாறையில் வரிசையாக புடை சிற்பமாக வெட்டப்பட்டு இருந்தது. ஒவ்வொரு சிற்பத்தின் கீழும் அதைச் செதுக்கியவரின் பெயர் ஒன்பதாம் நூற்றாண்டைச் சார்ந்த தமிழ் வட்டெழுத்தில் கல்வெட்டாக வெட்டப்பட்டு இருந்தது.

அடுத்து பேச்சிப்பள்ளத்திற்க்கு கொஞ்சம் மேலே சமணம் தழைத்தோங்கி இருந்தகாலத்தில் செயல்பட்ட மாதேவி பெரும்பள்ளியின் எச்சமான அஸ்திவாரத்தைக் கண்டோம். அஸ்திவாரத்தின் ஒரு கல்லில் தமிழ் வட்டெழுத்துக்கள் இன்றும் காணப்படுகின்றது. இவ்விடத்தில் அக்காலத்தில் நிறைய மாணவர்கள் படித்ததாகவும், சமண மதம் சார்ந்த பாண்டிய மன்னர் அடிக்கடி விஜயம் செய்து இருக்கின்றார் எனவும் கூறினர். திரு செல்வமணி அவர்கள் இதற்கும் மேலே ஒரு விளக்குத்தூணும், கன்னட கல்வெட்டும் இருப்பதாக கூறினார். அருகே சென்று பார்த்தபோது அது சமீபத்திய காலத்தில் 1971ம் ஆண்டு நிறுவப்பட்டது என்ற தகவல் சிறிது ஏமாற்றத்தைத் தந்தது. கன்னட கல்வெட்டு மட்டும் பார்த்து விட்டு செட்டிபொடுவில் இருக்கும் மாகாவீரரைக் காண கீழே இறங்கினோம்.

செட்டிபொடுவு ஸ்ரீ கருப்பன்ன சுவாமி கோவிலில் இருந்து சுமார் 500 மீட்டர் தொலைவு தான், அதே மலையின் மற்றொரு பகுதியில். இயற்கையாக அமைந்த குகை சுவற்றின் மேலே தீர்தங்கரர் புடைப்பு சிற்பங்கள் அதை வெட்டியவர்களின் பெயர்களுடன் தமிழ் வட்டெழுத்தில் வெட்டப்பட்டு இருந்தது. குகை நுழைவுக்கு ( வெளிப்புறம்) மேலே வலது கைப்பக்கம் மகாவீரர் புடைசிற்பம் பெரிய அளவில் வெட்டப்பட்டு இருந்தது. ஒருகாலத்தில் இக்குகையில் சமணர் படுக்கைகள் இருந்து இருக்கலாம், ஆனால் தற்போது காங்கிரீட்டால் மூடப்பட்டு விட்டது. சமணர் மலையும் செட்டிபொடுவு தீர்தங்கரரும் இந்திய தொல்லியல் துறையினரால் பராமரிக்கப்பட்டு வருகின்றது...
