MOTTAI ANDAVAR TEMPLE AT KANAKKUVELANPATTI.
This Mottai Anadavar as was identified as Tirthankara by Mr
Durai Sundaram, a retired Official of BSNL also joined with us. The standing
image of a Tirthankara with two Samaratharis on both sides are carved on a
boulder facing west to a height of 7 feet on a padma pedam. The Locals worships
these Tirthankara and attendants as Mottai Andavar, Sri Subramaniar / Murugan
with Sri Valli Devasena. Panguni Uthiram festivals are celebrated in a grand manner.
The images are about 15
feet high from the ground level. First it was identified as Bahubali with his
sisters. Since creepers are not found on the leg and body, the idea was changed
to Adhinathar and his daughters Brahmi & Sundari. This was posted in the
web sites and published in news papers also. When we went near the reliefs and
found that the centre image is only Sri
Adinath Tirthankara and side images are males holding samara. Hence they are not
Brahmi and Sundari as claimed. They may be royal attendants with samara. This
may be compared with the royal attendant’s
dress and the standing posture shown at Kundangal Mahavir relief. Experts
are requested to throw some light on these images. A pali, and un-finished beds are found about 50 feet from this place. Considering
these evidences, we may consider that a full-fledged Jain school with monks
might have functioned in this place. Experts of the opinion this may belongs to 7th to 8th Century.

After breakfast
assembled under a tree. Experts shared their experiences related Jainism and stressed the urgent need of
preserving our old heritage and Jain culture. Post lunch, we said good-by to Mr
Durai Sundaram & his friend and started our return journey to Chennai. One
the way it was planned to visit Jain’s beds at Sukkalikaradu, Tirthankaras at Puliyur, Kundangal and Omandur. The details are…..
JAIN BEDS AT SUKKALIKARADU
Our first stop on the
way to Chennai was at Sukkalaikaradu, about 7 KM from Karur. Already granite quarrying was in progress on this
karadu. Due to this the boulder above the beds was toppled and only one bed is
visible from out side. It has 5 beds and
4 are found under the boulder through the gap. Local people worships this
place, as the Pancha Pandavas beds, the hero's Pancha Pandavas of epic
Mahabharat. They also believed that Pancha Pandavas stayed here before going to
war against Duryodhana.

TIRTHANKARA ( CHETTIYARAPPICHI) – PULIYUR
Our next destination
was to Puliyur, where a Tirthankara is meditating posture under a neem tree
facing east. The local people worship him as Chettiyarappichi, applying
vibhuti and kungum.
Mukkudai, Samaratharis,
prabai mandalam, ashoka viruksham and srivatsam are shown on the image. It was
told that this Tirthankara may belongs to 3rd to 4th
century AD.

MAHAVIRA TIRTHANKARA AT KUNDANKAL.
This popularly known
Kundangal Paarai is near the Iyyar Malai, Kulithalai. 5 KM from Kulithalai on
Kulithalai to Manapparai route. This
monument is under the control of Archaeological Survey of India ( ASI),
providing fence around this monument is in progress.
This Mahavira
Tirthankara relief was carved as a relief on a oval shaped boulder sitting on a
rock, about 15 feet from the ground level. Devas, Samaratharis, four royal
attendants ( two male and two females ) in standing posture on both sides are
shown. The male royal attendants holding flower in their hand. As per the experts this relief belongs to 2nd century. Beds are
also made on the rock. It was told that inscriptions are there, which we
couldn’t identify.
