Thenupureeswarar Temple / Dhenupureeswarar Temple / Patteeswaram Durga Temple, Patteeswararam, Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu.

...a Continuation post.
26th September 2016.
Our  next destination was to Patteeswaram. Even though the main entrance Rajagopuram is on the east side, devotees used to enter through Durgai Amman Temple Rajagopuram and worships Durgai Amman first. Devotees knows this temple as Durgai temple instead of Shiva Temple. Even though I had been to this temple earlier, this time we spend more time to see the architecture of the Temple, Pillars and reliefs. (  for the details of my earlier visit ...Click Here  ).

This temple is also a hand work of Chozhas. The Durgai Amman, Swarna Ganapathy, Shanmugar and Bhairavars are brought from Chozhas Fort, Pazhayarai after their fall.

A brief history of this Pallipadai Temple ( as Per the display banner ).
This Pallipadai temple was built by the Chozha King Rajendran the son of Rajaraja – I. in memory of his step mother  Panchavan Madevi wife of Rajaraja- I. The architecture follows the Pazhuvettarayar style. She was the daughter of Pazhuvettarayar, one of the Chera small regional king ruled Pazhuvur, a part of Chozha kingdom. As per Pazhuvur temple Rajaraja-I's 27th reign year inscription records her as "Avani Sundarapurathu Pazhuvur Devar's ( Pazhuvettarayar ) thirumagal". She was also called as "Nakkan Thillaiyazhaki". She was one of the Thalichery woman, a dancer and a warrior too. She helped  Rajaraja – I for the construction of the Tanjore big temple. This is known from Rajaraja-I's 27th reign year inscription. A village was also named after her as “Panchavan Madevi Chaturvedi Mangalam”.

Rajenndra Chozha-I's inscription in this temple mentions this temple as "Pazhayarai alias Mudikonda Chozhapurathu Pallipadai Panchavan Madevichuram". The inscription mentions the Rajendra Chozha's lieutenant / Thalapathi, Arunmozhi alias Uthama Chozha Brahmarayan and one of the Saiva sect Lakuleesa Madam. The kosta images Vinayagar, Pichadanar, Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma and Durgai are the iconic sculptures of Rajendra Chozha-I's period. The Shiva Lingam is of  Pallava's style, may  belongs to  Pallava king Nandhivarman - II's, period 710 to 715 CE ..... may be brought from Pazhayarai where Pallavas ruled once and installed in any one of the temple  ( No proof for the same ).

The Rishabam and the ardha mandapam pillars belongs to Pazhuvattarayars period and similar Rishabam and Pillars can be seen at Pazhuvur temple also.

This Panchavan Madeveechuram is at a small Village called Patteeswaram, a part Pazhayarai, which was once a capital of Chozhas and Chozha King's families lived till their rule. This temple is about half KM from Patteeswaram Dhenupureeswarar Temple. This temple is now called as "Ramanathan Kovil".

Inscriptions are on the jagathy

141/ 24. SRI DHARMAPUREESWARAR TEMPLE, PAZHAIYARAI VADATHALI

This is the 141st Devaram Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 24th sthalam on the south side of river Kaveri. Appar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple.

This temple is at Muzhaiyur.  During my earlier visits, the temple was closed, but this time  Lord Shiva gave us darshan. There are lot of confusions about the Paadal Petra Sthalam at Pazhaiyarai, since the Pazhayarai Village has 4 temples on all 4 directions, via Kheel thali, Mel thali, Vada thali and Then thali. I thought previously this is one of the thevara Vaippu sthalam. After visiting this temple I understood that this is the Paadal Petra Sthalam.

Moolavar    : Sri Dharmapureeswarar.
Consort      : Sri Gnanambigai

Some of the important features of this temple are....
The temple facing east with a small Rajagopuram after the Rajagopuram. This is a mada type of temple with steps on east side. Amar Neethi nayanar with his wife sculptures on the side wall of steps.

In the Mandapam sannathi for Suryan, Bhairavar, Amar Neethi Nayanar with his wife, Nandhi and blipedam.

Moolavar is of 16 flat surfaces and size is little big. In koshtam, Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Brahma and Durgai.

The temple was closed by the Samanar and the same was opened after Appar practiced the fasting.

Sri Someshar Temple, Keezha Pazhayarai, Ponniyin Selvan Meet 2016, Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu.

 26th September 2016.
I made up mind to attend the Ponniyin Selvan’s second year meet ( for the 1st years details... Please Click here ) at Tanjore Periya Kovil ( Big Temple )  immediately on the seeing the Ponniyin Selvan’s Post in FB. I thought it would add  some flavour, to this meet by visiting some temples constructed by Chozha Kings especially Rajaraja-I and Rajendra Chozha. Mr Raja, Mrs Sakthi Prakash and Ms Gowthami  ( Aathirai Chinnaswamy )   also joined with me for this visit.  We selected  Kumbakonam as a hub to visit to the temples.

Arrived on Saturday and hired a taxi. We are able to cover Pazhayarai East, ( Keezha Pazhayarai) and North Temple ( Vada Thali - Muzhaiyur), Patteeswaram, ThiruSakthiMutram,  Thiruvalanchuzhi, Panchavan Madevi Pallipadai, Darasuram and Swamy malai Murugan ( One of the six abodes of Sri Subramaniar). Panchavan Madevi Pallipadai  and Pazhayarai Vada Thali are not visited before and other temples visited earlier, as a part of Padal Petra Sthalangal Darshan.  The temples selected are in a sequence such that start from Lodge and come back to the lodge with out detouring. This would save time and cover more number of Temples.

KEEZHA PAZHAYARAI / Pazhayarai Keelthali
In Pazhayarai, there are 4 temples on all the four directions. During my Yathra to Paadal Petra Sthalangal, visited this temple twice. In the earlier visits, the temple was under renovation. For the details of my earlier visit. ( Click here ).  The mottai gopuram stands with stone structure at the base and brick works after that. We had the opportunity of  climbing up to the top.

Pazhayarai was once capital to Chozha empire. There are series of temples built by Adithya Chozha to celebrate the victory of the battle at Thirupurambiyam ( 871 – 907 CE ) on the banks of river Kaveri. The Ponniyin Selvan’s  heros Rajaraja Chozha and Kundavai are grown up here. Rajendra Chozha was brought up here by Kundavai. The famous Chozha king Vijayalaya lived in Pazhayarai. The capital was moved to Thanjavur during Sundara Chozhan Period and Pazhayarai lost its importance.
