Sri Kongu Vidangeeswarar Temple, Kuruvan Valasu, Kadathur Near Udumalpet, Tiruppur District, Tamil Nadu.

10th September 2017.
This is a 13th century  Kongu Choha Period Shiva temple in a Village called Kuruvan Valasu near Kadathur, Udumalpet.

Moolavar : Sri Kongu Vidangeeswarar

Some of the important features of this temple are...
This temple is facing east with a nandhi in front without balipeedam, dwajasthambam and compound wall. The sanctum sanctorum consists of sanctum and artha mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is in dilapidated condition and polythene sheet is covered over the sanctum roof. Moolavar is still under worship. Ambal is sitting in front of the mandapam and there is a sannadhi for Bhairavar. The moolavar is of swayambhu called Vidangar – means with out chiseled out of stone.

HISTORY & INSCRIPTIONS
The sanctum walls has the inscriptions of  Kongu Veera Rajendra Choha ( 1207 CE-1256 CE ) period, who ruled both Vada Kongu and Then Kongu regions.  There are about 10 inscriptions. One of the inscription says that Jayangonda Choha mandalam Anjatha Brahmarayan, a chieftain had constructed Subramaniyar Sannadhi. Though he belongs to Thondai nadu, but he had done this at Kongu mandalam.

In another inscription two govt officials donated  land of this area Kadathur to Keeranur temple near Dharapuram. In another inscription money was donated to buy a land and the income from the land to be utilized for burning of a perpetual lamp. The 5th inscription  mentions about the details of donation made for Natarajar and Sivakami.

In 1233AD inscription, one of the official of King Veera Rajendra Chozha donated a land for naivedyam to Lord Shiva  to get rid of Graha dosham of his King.  In another inscription a Chieftain called Avimanarama Pallavaraiyan had donated gold for Pillayar neivedyam.

An important order issued by the King was also documented in this temple. This inscription says that the Kammalars can wear Chappals on the  streets, can plaster the walls of their houses, to use of drum called perikai & two conch for the functions. In addition to this Kammalars can build their houses with two doors. These restrictions were  imposed by the Vellalars earlier was  removed by this King’s order.   It is evident that the un-touch-ability and caste discrimination prevailed even before 13th century. Social injustice was done by a caste to the other caste. The King has to do justice for that and document the same in the form of inscription. It is sad to note that even after 1000 years some caste people hangs on the old systems.

Since this temple is near to Kadathur Sri Arjuneswarar, the temples Lord’s name is also mentioned in the inscription as “Thirumarudayar”
