Hero stone / Sati Stone /Veerakallu/ வீரக்கல் / நவகண்டம் / அரிகண்டம், Tharamangalam, Salem District, Tamil Nadu.

The Visit to this Hero and Sati Stones at Tharamangalam was a part of Kolli Hills Heritage walk  - “வல்வில் ஒரி தேச மரபு நடை..." organised by எண்திசை வரலாற்று மரபுநடை குழு, on 20th and 21st May 2023. Thanks to Mr AT Mohan to take me to these Hero Stones. 


From Amman kovil patti to Tharamangalam, on the way happened to see a Sati Stone on the side of the road culvert. The Sati stone is half buried. In this Sati stone, the hero is shown with his wife with tuft on right side of their head. The images are not so clear or not chiselled perfectly. This Sati stone is under worship.  This Sati stone belongs to 16th to 17th century.


These Hero Stones are near the Tharamangalam Police Station. These are lying adjacent to a well and it was told that these are taken from the well. This group consists of Two hero stones and two Sati Stones. These  Sati  and hero stones belongs to 16th to 17th century.

In this sati stone, the hero’s wife is shown on his right and holding a toddy pot. Both are shown with Nayakas style tuft. The hero is in anjali hastam. He is wearing dhoti from hip and the bottom touches his feet. A Sword is tied to hip.


In this Sati stone both the hero and his wife are in anjali hastam and  Nayaks style tuft is shown. Both are wearing ornaments in the ears, neck and hands. The hero is wearing a dhoti and it’s bottom touches his feet and upper body is covered with a towel. He is shown with big belly.


In this individual hero stone is holding a sword in the raised right hand and round shield in the left hand, in front of his stomach. He is wearing a dhoti below his hip up to the feet. The hero seems to be bulky.


In this Individual hero Stone the hero is standing with a sword on the raised right hand. The left hand is in hanging and holding some thing, which is not clear. He wears a dhoti up to his feet. His tuft is on the left side of his head.  A dragger is tied to his hip.

The Hero & Sati Stones near Sri Velayuthaswamy Temple, Tharamangalam.  
There are two hero stones installed on the left side of the Sri Velayuthaswamy Temple, believed to be belongs to 16th to 17th Century. Both hero stones are Sati stones.

In the first Sati stone the hero is shown at the centre and his wives are on both sides. The hero is with big mustache, wearing ornaments in the ears and big tuft. He is holding a sword in the right hand and a shield in the left hand. The right hand side wife is anjali hastam, wearing ornaments and a big tuft. The left had side wife is carrying a toddy pot in the left hand and a flower in the right hand. Parrots are shown above the ladies, which are considered as a mangala ( auspicious ) symbols.


The other hero stone is also a Sati stone. The hero is holding a sword in the right hand pointing down. The left is hand is shown in raised position and what he is holding is not known. The hero is wearing ornaments in ears, on the neck and hands. His wife is shown on his right side with right hand in raised position. Left hand is holding something, what is not known.

Elameeshwarar Temple / இளமீஸ்வரர் டெம்பிள் / Ilameeswarar Temple, Tharamangalam, Salem District, Tamil Nadu

The Visit to this Sri Elameeshwarar Temple at Tharamangalam was a part of Kolli Hills Heritage walk  - “வல்வில் ஒரி தேச மரபு நடை..." organised by எண்திசை வரலாற்று மரபுநடை குழு, on 20th and 21st May 2023.  This temple is about 200 meter from Sri Kailasanathar Temple built by the Katti Mudalis.


Moolavar  : Sri Ilameeswarar / Elameeshwarar
Consort    : Sri Thayyal Nayagi

Some of the salient features of this temple are….
This temple is facing east with an entrance from north side narrow lane. A Dharalinga banam, balipeedam and Rishabam are in front of the Temple. Moolavar at the sanctum is of Swayambhu on a round Avudayar. There is no murtis in Koshtams.

Nagars are under a banyan tree and a Vinayagar under the clutches of Peepal tree roots. . In mukha mandapam, Vinayagar as Bala Vidhya Ganapathi, Maha Vishnu and Sri Valli Devasena Arumugam, Bairavar, Chandikeswarar, Suriyan are in the mukha mandapam.  Ambal Thayyal Nayagi is in a separate sannidhi facing south.

Dharalingam ( from where it has come and why it is installed in front of balipeedam like deepasthamabm.. ? )

ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam and a Mukha mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is on a pada bandha adhisthanam with three patta kumudam and pattikai. The Bhitti starts with vedikai.The Pilasters are of Vishnu kantha pilasters with square base, naga bandham, kalasam, kudam, lotus petals mandi, palakai, veerakandam and poomottu pothyal. The Prastharam consists of valapi with lotus petals, kapotam with nasi kudus and Vyyalavari. Nasi kudus has the bas-reliefs of various deities, demon faces etc,. The Makara thundam has the reliefs of warriors, etc,. An ekatala vesara Vimanam is on the sanctum sanctorum. The Greeva koshtas are without images.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
This temple was constructed during Chozha period and latter received contributions from Pandyas, Vijayanagaras, Hoysalas and Katti Mudalis. The inscriptions are recorded and published in “Salem – Namakkal mavatta kalvettukkal” by, Thanjavur Tamil University. One of the Kattimudali’s period inscription is in the form of poem, which praises Katti Mudalis. As per the inscription the Shiva was called as வடபூவானிய நாட்டுத் தாரமங்கலத்து இளமீகவரமுடைய நாயனார் - Vada Bhuvaniya nattu Tharamangalathu Ilameeswaramudaya nayanar”.

தாரமங்கலம் ஸ்ரீ கைலாசநாதர் கோயிலில் உள்ள விஜயநகர அரசர் வீர வஸந்தராயர் ( 1508 CE ) காலத்தைச் சார்ந்த கல்வெட்டு வீரசோழ மண்டலத்தின் வடபூவாணிய நாட்டு வேளாளரில் ஒருவரான இம்முடி இளம்நயினா முதலியார் என்பவரால் தேவதான இறையிலியாக இளம்சமுத்திரம் என்னும் ஊர் விடப்பெற்றதையும், தாரமங்கலம் கயிலாயநாதர் கோவிலுக்கும் இளமீசுவரர் கோவிலுக்கும் சேர்த்து அவ்வூர் அளிக்கபெற்றது. திருத்தோன்பட்டி என்ற ஊர் “இளம்சமுத்திரம்” எனப் பெயர் மாற்றம் செய்யப்பெற்றதைப்பதிவு செய்கின்றது.
The Vijayanagara King Veera Vasantharayar ( 1508 CE ) inscription at Sri Kalasanathar temple, records the gift of Village Thiruththonpatti after renaming it as “Ilam samudram” as Thevadhana Irayili by Veera vhozha mandalathu Vada Bhoovaniya nattu Immudi Ilamnayina Mudaliar, one of the Velalar Community. This was gifted both to Sri Kailasanathar and Ilameeswarar Temples.

கருவறையின் மேற்குபுறசுவரில் உள்ள இரண்டாம் சடையவர்மன் சுந்தர பாண்டியனின் 27ஆவது ஆட்சியாண்டு ( 26.12.1277 ) கல்வெட்டு வடபூவானிய நாட்டுத் தாரமங்கலத்து இளமீகவரமுடைய நாயனார்க்கு அந்நாட்டு நாட்டவரும் கண்டிய தேவரும் இறைவர் திருமேனிக்கும் கண்டிய தேவருக்கும் நன்மை உண்டாதற் பொருட்டுக் கோகனப்பள்ளி என்னும் கிராமத்தைக் கொடையாக அளித்தமையைப் பதிவு செய்கின்றது.
Sadayavarman Sundara Pandyan-II’s 27th reign year inscription on the west side wall of the sanctum sanctorum records that a Village called Gokanapalli was gifted to this temple for the benefit of Shiva and Kandiyathevar  and people of Vada Bhoovaniya nadu, by Kandiyathevar.

முன்மண்டபத்தின் வடக்குப்புறச் சுவரில் உள்ள இரண்டாம் சடயவர்மன் சுந்தர பாண்டியனின் ஆறாவது ஆட்சியாண்டு ( 21.07.1281 ) கல்வெட்டு தாரமங்கலத்து நாட்டு முதலிகளில் நல்லுடையப்பர் என்பவர் தன்னுடைய தந்தையின் பெயரில் அமைத்த இலக்குமண சதுர்வேதி மங்கலத்துப் பட்டர்களுக்குப் இன்நாட்டு நாட்டவர் ( பூவாணி நாட்டவர் )  1500 நற்பணத்திற்கு  நன்செய் புன்செய் நிலஉரிமையை விற்றுக்கொடுத்த செய்தியை பதிவு செய்கின்றது.
The Pandya King Sadayavarman Sundara Pandyan-II’s 6th reign year inscription on the north side wall of the mukha mandapam records the sale of land for 1500 Narkasu / Money to the Bhattars who resides in the Village called Lakkumana Chaturvedimangalam, which was formed in the name of his his father by Nalludaiappar of Tharamangala Maudalis.

முன்மண்டபத்தின் வடக்குப்புறச் சுவரில் உள்ள இரண்டாம் சடயவர்மன் சுந்தர பாண்டியனின் பதிமூன்றாம் ஆட்சியாண்டு ( 01.08.1289 ) கல்வெட்டு தாரமங்கலத்து முதலிகள் இளமாண்டை உள்ளிட்டார் சிலர் நல்லுடையப்ப முதலியார் பெயரில் வைத்த அகரத்துப் பட்டர்களுக்குக் நிலம் கொடுத்த செய்தி இடம்பெற்றுள்ளது. அவ்வூரின் குளம் உடைந்து பாழடைந்தமையால் அதைச் செப்பனிட்டு நீர் பாயத்துக் கொள்ளவும் நீர்பாய்ந்த விளையுளைத் துய்த்துக் கொள்ளவும் உரிமை வழங்கப் பெற்றமையையும் பதிவு செய்கின்றது.
The Pandya King Sadayavarman Sundara Pandyan-II’s 13th reign year inscription records that Tharaamangalam  Mudalis, including Ilamandai, gave land to Bhattars of Agaram, which was formed in the name of Nalludaiyappa Mudali. Also the right was given to the Bhattars to cultivate the lands using the kulam, after rectification.

முன்மண்டபத்தின் தெற்குப்புறச் சுவரில் உள்ள இரண்டாம் சடயவர்மன் சுந்தர பாண்டியனின் பதினைந்தாவது ஆட்சியாண்டு ( 15.05.1280 ) கல்வெட்டு பூவாணிய நாட்டு நாட்டவர்களுள் நல்லுடையப்பன் தன் தந்தையின் பெயரில் கொடுக்கப்பட்ட இலக்குமண சதுர்வேதி மங்கலத்துப் பட்டர்களுக்குக் குளம் ஒன்றைத் தருமதான இறையிலியாக வெட்டிக் கொடுத்த செய்தி இடம் பெற்றுள்ளது. இக்குளத்தால் நீர் பாயும் நிலங்களின் விளையுளைத் துய்த்துக் கொள்ளச் சர்வமானிய இறையிலியாக அளிக்கப் பெற்ற செய்தியைப் பதிவு செய்கின்றது.
The Pandya King Sadayavarman Sundara Pandyan-II’s 15th reign year inscription records that Nalludaiyappa Mudali had excavated the Kulam and gave it as irayili in the Lakkumana Chathurvedimangalam bhattars, by Nalludayappa Mudai, which was formed in the name of his father.

முன்மண்டபத்தின் தெற்குப்புறச் சுவரில் உள்ள கோனேரிமை கொண்டான் காலத்தைச் சார்ந்த கல்வெட்டு தாரமங்கலத்தில் நல்லுடையப்பர் என்பார் இலக்குமண சதுர்வேதி மங்கம் என்ற அகரத்தை அமைத்தார். அங்கு வாழ்ந்த பட்டர்களுக்குப் பல இடங்களில் இருந்த நீர்பாய்ந்த நன்செய் நிலத்தைப் பூதான இறையிலியாக உரிமையாக்கினார். அந்நிலத்தின் அனைத்து விளையுளுக்கும் வரிவிலக்கு அளித்துத் துய்த்துக்கொள்ள ஒலை பிடிபாட்டு ஆவணம் அளித்த செய்தியை பதிவு செய்கின்றது.
The Konerimaikondan’s inscription on the Mukha mandapam south side wall records the same message, which was stated above, plus some additions like donation of Nansei lands as Bhudhana irayili after exempting taxes to the Bhattars by Nalludayappar.

போசாள மன்னன் வீர இராமநாத தேவரின் பொயு 1279 ஆம் ஆண்டு முன்மண்டப வடக்குப் பக்கத்தில் உள்ள கல்வெட்டு இளமீசுவருடய நாயனார்க்குத் தாரமங்கலத்து ஊரவரும் முதலிகளும் தேவதான இறையிலியாக எல்லைகள் வரையறுத்து 500 குழி நிலம் வழங்கிய செய்தியைப் பதிவு செய்கின்றது.
The Hoysala King Veera Ramanathan’s 1279 CE inscription records the gift of 500 kuli land as thevadhana irayili  after marking the periphery limits by Tharamangalam Villagers and Mudalis.

போசாள மன்னன் வீர இராமநாத தேவரின் பொயு 1254 ஆம் ஆண்டு கருவறையின் மேற்குப்புற சுவரில் உள்ள கல்வெட்டு வடபூவாணிய நாட்டுத் தாரமங்கலத்து இளமீசுவரர் கோவிலுக்கு முதலியார் சிலர் சேர்ந்து தங்களுக்கு உரிமையான நிலத்தை இறையிலியாக நானூறு குழி நிலத்தை நீர்வார்த்து உரிமை செய்த செய்தி குறிப்பிடப்பெற்றுள்ளது.
The Hoysala King Veera Ramanathan’s 1254 CE inscription on the Sanctum sanctorum west wall records the gift of 400 kuli land as Irayili to this temple by Mudalis and others, which was belonged to them.

கருவறையின் வடக்குப்புறச் சுவரில் உள்ள கல்வெட்டு நல்லுடையப்பர் உள்ளிட்ட ஆறு முதலிகளும் தங்கள் தந்தையின் பெயரில் சோமநாதத் தேவரைப் பிரதிட்டை செய்தாற் பொருட்டுக் வித்யாஸமுத்ர ஸ்ரீகண்டதேவர்க்கு குருதட்சினையாக நன்செய் நிலத்தை இறையிலியாக்கிக் கொடுத்த செய்தியைப் பதிவு செய்கின்றது,
The inscription on the north wall of Sanctum sanctorum records that 6 Mudalis, which includes Nalludayappa Mudali installed the Somanatha Devar’s image, for the same nansei lands was gifted to Vidhyasamudra Srikandadevar as Guru Dhakshina, as irayili.

முன்மண்டபத்தின் கிழக்குப்புறச்சுவரில் உள்ள விஜயநகர அரசர் அச்சுததேவ மகாராயரின் 27.04.1540ந் தேதி கல்வெட்டு வடபூவாணிய நாட்டுத் தாரமங்கலத்தைச் சார்ந்த வேளாள நிலங்கிழார் இம்மடி கட்டிமுதலியார் அந்நாட்டின் காவோரிப்பட்டி என்னும் கிராமத்தைக் கோட்டை சமுத்திரம் எனப்பெயர் மாற்றம் செய்து எல்லைகளை வரையறுத்து அந்தணர்களின் வசிப்பிடமாக அளித்த செய்தியைப் பதிவு செய்கின்றது.
The Vijayanagara King Achchutha deva maharayar’s 27th April 1540 dated inscription on the east wall of Mukha mandapam records that a Velala Mirasudhar gifted Village Kaveripatti after changing the name as Kottai samudram for the Andhanars living place.

முன்மண்டபத்தின் தெற்குப்புறச்சுவரில் உள்ள விஜயநகர அரசர் அச்சுததேவ மகாராயரின் 08.04.1541 தேதி கல்வெட்டு இம்மடிகட்டி முதலியார் என்பவர் சிதம்பரத்தில் இருநூறு பணத்துக்கு நிலம் வாங்கி மடம் ஒன்றைக் கட்டினார். அம்மடத்துக்குவணங்காமுடி மடம்எனப் பெயரிடப் பெற்றது. அம்மடத்தில் திருமாகேசுவர பூசை தொடர்ந்து நடத்துதற் பொருட்டு நான்கு திசையினின்றும் வந்த பொருள்களுக்கு இனம் பிரித்து வரி விதிக்கப்பெற்ற செய்தியைப் பதிவு செய்கின்றது.
The Vijayanagara King Achutha Devarayar’s 08th April 1541 dated inscription records that Immadikatti Mudali bought a land and constructed a madam called “Vanangamudi Madam”, at Chidambaram. The inscription further records that the levy of taxes for continuation of Thirumaheswarar pooja at the madam, to the materials came from all directions.

முன்மண்டபத்தின் தெற்குப்புறச்சுவரில் உள்ள விஜயநகர அரசர் சாதாசிவ மகாராயாரின் 26.08.1547 தேதி கல்வெட்டு இம்மடிகட்டி முதலியார் வடபூவானிய நாட்டுத் தாரமங்கலத்து இராம கூடல் என்னும் கோவிலுக்கு நீர் வார்ததுக் கிராமத்தை அளித்த செய்தி இடம்பெற்றுள்ளது. ௮க்கிராமம் வணங்காமுடி சமுத்திரம் என்றும் பெயர் மாற்றம் செய்யப்பெற்றது. அவ்வூர் அந்தணர்களின் வசிப்பிடமாக அளிக்கப்பெற்ற செய்தியைப் பதிவு செய்கின்றது.
The Vijayanagara King Sadasiva Maharayar’s 26th August 1547 dated inscription on the mukha mandapa south side wall records that Immadikatti Mudali, gave a gift of Village to Tharamangalam Ramakoodal temple. The Village’s name was changed as Vanangamudi Chatram and gave it for the Andhanar’s living place / residences.

முக மண்டப வாசலில் உள்ள பொயு 17 ஆம் நூற்றாண்டு கட்டி முதலியின் கல்வெட்டு கட்டிமுதலியின் வாய்மையைச் சிறப்பித்துக் கூறும் எண்ணலங்காரப் பாடல் வடிவில் உள்ளது, செங்கதிர் பன்னிரண்டு, ஈசர் பதினொருவர், திக்குப் பத்து, கங்கை ஒன்பது, மலைகள் எட்டு, கடல் ஏழு, கார்த்திகை ஆறு, மன்மதனின் கணைகள் ஐந்து, வேதங்கள் நான்கு, சுடர் மூன்று, சாதி இரண்டு, ஆனால் தாரமங்கலத்தைச் சார்ந்த கட்டிமுதலியின் வாரத்தை ஒன்றே, சொல் மாறாதவர் என்று புகழ்கின்றது.

The 17th Century inscription on the mukha mandapam entrance praises the Katti Mudali as the person who abides his one word, even-though the Sun, Shiva, Directions, Ganga Hills, Seas, Karthigai, Manmadhan’s  arrows, Vedas Sudar and Castes are more than one.  

Entrance thoranavayil was constructed on 06th December 2000, by the Theiva Vazhipattu Peravai Kiruthigai Sangam,





LEGENDS
It is believed that worshipping Bala Vidhya Ganapathi will excel in studies. Hence lot of students visit this place on Fridays & Tuesdays, offer Kolukkattai and do archana.


It is believed that Meenakshi Sundareswarar Marriage was conducted at this place. Also Shiva is in the form of an Young God, hence Shiva is called as Elameeshwarar. It is believed that worshipping Shiva and Ambal, the separated couple will re-join together.

As per the legend, Katti Mudali, king of this region was once came to this place, was a dense forest during that time. After reaching here, his soldiers tried to tie the King’s Horse at one particular place, but couldn’t do so. When dig the earth, they found a Shiva Linga.The Katti Mudali constructed this temple. ( Please note that this temple exists since 11th to 12th Century and Katti Mudali came in to records since 17th Century ). 

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular poojas special poojas are conducted on Pradosham, Maha Shivaratri, Ashtami Theipirai, Kiruthigai Pooja, Panguni uthiram, etc,.

The temple will be kept opened between 07.00 hrs to 10.00 hrs and 17.00 hrs to 19.00 hrs.

Periyeripatti, Thamizhi / Brahmi Inscription, Amman Kovil Patty / அம்மன்கோவில்பட்டி / Salem District, Tamil Nadu.

The Visit to this Historical and Heritage Place at Periyeripatti in Salem District with an earliest, 4th Century CE Thamizhi inscription was a part of Kolli Hills Heritage walk  - வல்வில் ஒரி தேச மரபு நடை... organised by எண்திசை வரலாற்று மரபுநடை குழு, on 20th and 21st May 2023. But this is popularly known as Amman Kovil Patty inscription.


சேலம் மாவட்டம், ஓமலூர் வட்டத்துக்குட்பட்ட  அம்மன்கோயில்பட்டியில், பாறையின் மீது வெட்டப்பட்ட தமிழி கல்வெட்டு. சேலம் மாவட்டத்தில் கண்டுபிடிக்கப்பட்ட மிகப் பழமையான கல்வெட்டு இது. அவ்விடம் தமிழ்நாடு தொல்லியல் துறையால் பெரியேரிப்பட்டி என பதியப்பட்டு இருந்தாலும், அம்மன்கோயில்பட்டி கல்வெட்டு என பெரும்பான்மையான மக்களால் அழைக்கப்படுகிறது. இக்கல்வெட்டு இரண்டு வரிகளைக் கொண்டது. இக்கல்வெட்டின் காலம் நான்காம் நூற்றாண்டு என்று கணிக்கப்படுகிறது.

As per Tamil Nadu Archaeological Department’s display, this place is called as Periyeripatti on the banks of river Upparu with a pond. The two line  Thamizhi inscription found on the boulder of Periyeripatti with a spring was dated to 4th Century CE.

The inscription records that Kokoor Chieftain Varamban’s son Viyakkan Koban Kanadevan has cut the pond. Varamban seems to be associated with the sangam period, may be related to Cheras. The inscription reads as ..

வரம்பன் கோகூர் கிழார் மகன் வியக்கன் கோபன்கணதேவன் தொட சுனை
கல்வெட்டு வரிகள் ( As per Salem Namkkal Mavatta kalvettukkaL ). 

1, பரம்பன் கோகூர் கிழார் மகன் வியக்
2, கன் கோபன் கண தேவன் தொட சுனை

கல்வெட்டின் பொருள்
பரம்பன் கோகூர் கிழார் என்பவரின் மகன் வியக்கன் கோபன் கணதேவன் என்பவன் வெட்டிய சுனை என்பது கல்வெட்டின் பொருள் ஆகும். பரம்பன் என்ற முதல் சொல் வரம்பன் என பாடபேதத்துடன் படித்தவர்களும் உண்டு.

The Pond - sunai

A Deepa sthambam is installed at the top of the rock. In front of it is a Shrine for Nagars. In front of Nagars found scratch marks. These scratch marks my be formed during sharpening of stone tools by the Stone age people.
