Sri Nellaiappar Temple / Arulmigu Nellaiappar Temple / நெல்லையப்பர் கோவில், திருநெல்வேலி / Tirunelveli, Tirunelveli District, Tamil Nadu.

This is the 258th Devaram Paadal petra Shiva Sthalam and 14th & last Shiva Sthalam of Pandya Naadu. This is the Tamira Sabhai, one of the 5 Sabhas where Lord Shiva Danced. The temple spreads over 14 acres and measures 756 feet in length and 378 feet width. This place Tirunelveli was called as Venupuram in purana period.


As per Sekkizhar’s Periya Puranam, Thirugnanasambandar came to this temple, after worshiping Lord Shiva of Thirupuvanam, Thirukanaper, Tiruchuli and Courtallam. After this temple’s visit he went to Rameswaram.

Some of the important features of this temple are…..
The temple is facing east with a 7 Tier Rajagopuram. A wooden mandapa is in front of the Rajagopuram. Balipeedam, Dwajasthambam and Rishabam is after the Rajagopuram. The Big size Stucco Rishabam under a mandapam is at the east side entrance. Moolavar is swayambhu and a scar can be seen on the top with an interesting legend. It is believed that the avudayar visible is 21st and there are 20 avudayars still below the ground level. Hence called as “Miruthunjayamurti”. In koshtam Dakshinamurthy.  In the main sannadhi prakara Kanni Vinayagar, Nandhi Devar, Pandya Rajan. The painting of Pichadanar and Risha pathinis is on the wall. 

In the 3rd outer Parakaram, sannadhi for Nalvar, Subramaniyar, Dakshinamurthy ( On the opposite, way to Ambal Kanthimathi Amman Temple ), Sankaranayinar Swamy, Gomathi Amman Sannadhi, Arumuganayinar sannadhi ( The details are written in Architecture ), Vinayagar ( with stucco vinayagar on the top) – on the western side, Kasi Viswanathar with Visalakshi, Vayu Lingam, Vanniyadi sastha, Kala bhairavar and Navagrahas.  

At the entrance of the 2nd outer prakaram on the left,  Vedha Battar, Adhikara Nandhikeswarar, Namashivaya murti. In the Second outer prakaram Suryan, Nalvar Urchava idols / moorthangal, Thiyagarajar sannadhi, 63var in brass, Agasthiyar, Jwaradevar ( Details are written in Architecture ), Theyu Lingam, Polla Pillayar ( Details are written separately ), 63 vars in stone, Somaskandar in the upper level with steps to climb, Vayu Lingam, Vinayagar, Mutrum Kanda Ramakon, Aagasa Lingam, Nellai Murugan with Valli Devasena, Santhana sabapathy is along with Rudra Vishnu, Rishis ( sandal paste is applied throughout the year ), Gajalakshmi with Ashta Lakshmis on both sides, Shani Bhagavan, Sahasralingam, Sabha mandapam and Chandran.

Maha Vishnu as Ananda sayana Perumal is on the left side of moolavar ( Right side when we stand in front of moolavar ). In Urchava idols Maha Vishnu is with a pot/ kamandala along with Lord Shiva and Parvati. During marriage  pouring water on the hands of bride groom – tharaivarthu koduthal – is a ritual. Here the Maha Vishnu is seen with a pot / kamandala.This ritual is followed during Thirukalyana urchavam held in Aipasi also. A Shiva Linga relief is in the chest of Mahavishnu.

SRI KANTHIMATHI AMMAN SANNADHI
Ambal is in a separate temple with a Rajagopuram in front. Except at the entrance there is not many reliefs.  In the inner parakaram sannadhi for Kanni moola Ganapathy, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar.

Sannadhis in the interconnecting corridors between Lord Shiva and Ambal Temples are a Shiva Lingam, Kasi Viswanathar, mahalingam, Murugan with Valli Devasena and Manjanavaravu Amman.

ARCHITECTURE
The temple has 8 Mandapams and 5 Rajagopurams. The entrance mandapam on the eastern side Rajagopuram has an old wooden mandapam with lot of  wooden relief works. Potramarai kulam is in side temple. In addition to this there are mandapas Sangili mandapam, Thirukalyana mandapam, Ayirangal ( 1000 pillar ) mandapa, Vasantha mandapam, Somavara mandapam, Oonjal mandapam, Navagraha mandapam, Maha mandapam and Mani mandapam in this temple. Balipeedam with a Big size Stucco Rishabam are under a mandapam is at the east side entrance. The pillars has beautiful relief works.

There are two Durgai Amman sannidhis in this temple. Mahishasura mardhini sannadi is facing south and Pandasura mardhini sannadhi is facing north.

Musical pillars at the mani mandapam are special attraction in this temple. The central pillar is surrounded by the  48 small pillars with various dimensions. Different musical notes/ sounds can be heard when tapped.

The Arumugar sannidhi is a special in this temple. The Murugan is sitting on a Peacock with 6 faces and 12 hands. The hands are holding the respective weapons. Sri Valli & Devasena are on both sides. The sanctum is constructed in such way  that devotees can circumambulate and worship the other side faces of Lord Muruga.  As per the legend there was a devotee called Amavasai  Paradesi, who lived 120 years takes kavadi and attained siddhi on one Ammavasya day ( new moon day ).

Jwaradevar or Suradevar is with three faces / heads, thee  legs,  and three hands holds thandam, mani and soolam. It is believed that those who are suffering from fever, will get cured after worship Jwara devar with pepper powder and do abhishekam with hot water.

HISTORY & INSCRIPTIONS:
Since Thirugnanasambandar has sung hymns, the temple might have been existed before 7th Century. As per the inscriptions this place was called as Keel Vembu nattu Tirunelveli / Tirunelveli, Lord Shiva was called as Thirunelveli Udaya Thambiran and Ambal was called as Thirukamakottathu Aludaya Nachiyar.

Konerimaikondan Sundara Pandyan’s 13th year ethir (+21 year) inscription ( AR 119 of 1894, SII, V- 408 ) records the endowment of Naivedyam and pooja materials like garland ilaiamuthu, to both Lord Shiva and Ambal for the sandhis / poojas in the name of the King  Veerapandyan for which a Kulam / Tanks was gifted to this temple.

The Pandya King Veera Pandyan’s 4th year reign inscription ( AR 129 of 1894, SII, V- 418 ) records the sale of the lands by the Thalaikolis ( Dancers ), Koothan Nampiratiyana Seyya Perumal Thalikoli.  

Pandya King Kulasekara Pandya’s  9+30th year reign inscription ( AR 139-B of 1894, SII, V- 430 ) records the endowment of Naivedayam burning of lamps  by Nakkan Urimai Azhakiya Perumal alias Urimai Azhaki Perumal Thalaikoli ( a Dancer ), for which quantity is mentioned as Kariyamuthu, Milakamuthu, Adakayamuthy, Beetle nut  12 and leaves 24,  12 ulakku ghee supplied this will made two times on monthly Thirukarthigai day.

Pandya King Veera Pandyan’s 4th year reign inscription ( AR 142 of 1894, SII, V- 433 ) records the  endowment of burning perpetual lamp by Malaimandalathu Malaiyam Brahmin Narayanan uruthira Pillai received the gift by Suththavalli Peruntheru merchant,  for which one ulakku oil to be supplied to the temple.

The Chozha king Kulothunga Chozha’s ... year reign inscription starts with his meikeerthi ( AR 145 of 1894, SII, V- 436 ) records the rectification of the land which was not cultivated ( palpaddu ) due to breach of channels etc, gifted as the devadhana. From the cultivated land 4 kase and 5 kalam  to be paid to the temple.

Pandya King Veera Pandya's 7th year reign inscription ( AR 151 of 1894, SII, V- 443 ) records the endowment of burning perpetual lamp  for Ilaya Pillayar ( Murugan Temple ) by Malai mandalathu Malayan Brahmin Kundrathu devi Chitharappillai. The gift was received by the Suththamalli Peruntheru merchant and supply the ulakku oil to the temple.  

Pandya King Kulasekara Pandya’s 34th year reign inscription ( AR 153 of 1894, SII, V- 445 ), records the detailed Naivedyam of different types and pooja materials for morning, afternoon and night. 

The Pandya king Sundara Pandyan’s 8th year reign inscriptions starts with his meikeerthi as “Poomalath thiruvum.... “ ( AR 154 of 1894, SII, V- 446 ) records that the land donated as devathanam  and shares  for the Battars of 60 and 5 Battars of Vishnu Temple called Vinnakara alwar, Pandyamadevi esvaramudayar and Thondaiman Vinnakaralwar temples Chonadu kondu Mudikonda Chozhapurathu Veerabhishekam panniyarulina Sundara Pandyan’s  2 +17th year reign inscription ( AR 155 of 1894, SII, V- 447 ) records that from Keelvembu Nattu Tirunelveli Nadukanthavuthan Kulasekara Thevar, Sundaravalli Peruntheru Merchant  received 10 achchu for which 1 padi oil to be supplied to this temple.

Pandya King Sundara Pandyan’s 8th year 988 days inscription  ( AR 156 of 1894, SII, V- 448 ) starts with his meikeerthi, records the Change of shares of the Battars of 220 to 240 Battars  of the Land donated to them as devathanam

Chozha King Rajendra Chozha’s 8th reign inscription ( AR 157 of 1894, SII, V- 449 ), records the endowment of  applying a coat of Karpooram / Chambhor, Sandal paste, Ahil and Naivedyam of kaduku, pepper & turmeric, adaikai, Sugar, Salt  by his official Brahma Sri Kizhar. For applying coating ½ kalanju,  for burning perpetual lamp, 8 kalanju was paid to the treasury. For the same a Land was donated.

Pandya King Chozhan thalai konda Veera Pandyan’s 1+ 15th year reign inscription ( AR 162 of 1894, SII, V- 454 ), records the endowment of burning Perpetual lamps by Vellalan Cholaicheti Otri for which 25 saava moova peradu was received by Chieftain Senthamangalavan from which one Alakku ghee was supplied.

LEGENDS: 
It is believed that during Uchi kala pooja Gandhimathi Ambigai used  come to Moolavar Sannadhi and worships Lord Shiva. And this is the temple where Lord Shiva and Parvati gave kalyana Kolam to sage Agathiyar.

This Thamira Sabai is one of the 5 Sabas, where Lord Shiva danced. ( The other Places are, Rathna Sabha - Thiruvalangadu, Velli Ambalam – Madurai, Courtallam – Chitra Sabha  and Gold ambalam - Chidambaram ). This is called  as Thamira sabai, since the river Thamirabarani is flowing through the place. The river water contains some amount of metal called Tamiram, hence called a Thamira Sabai.

Vedhabattar / Vedasharma was behind this legend. The name Tirunelveli came after Lord Shiva put a fence ( veli ) to save from the rain of the paddy meant for Lord's Thiruamudhu / Naivedyam.

Muzhuthunganda Rama kon used to carry milk on this way. He was toppled on one particular spot in the bamboo forest daily. Rama Kon wants to find out the reason. He cuts the bamboos and flood was oozed out from one particular place. He found A Shiva Linga in side, hence called as “Vey muththa Nathar”.

There  is a local legend about the “Anavaratha Lingam”. A muslim by name Anvar khan prayed this Lord Shiva for curing his wife’s stomach pain. After cured he donated jewellery to Lord Shiva.

Polla Pillayar is also special in this temple. Vinayagar is also called as Pillai Thunda Vinayagar. For the child boon, the devotees, observe vratham for 41 days and pray Vinayagar. After child was born, the child will be brought to this sannadhi and the child will be passed through a window.

Natarajar is in a separate sannadhi also called Thamira Sabha. Natarajar is also called as Agni Sabapathi. Sivakami and Karaikkal Ammaiyar are in the Sabha. Natarajar is always applied with sandal paste though-out the year. Natarajar is looking with beautiful smile. 

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on Navratri, Thirukalyanam in Aippasi, Arudra darshanam, Aani Brahmotsavam ( June- July ), Thai Poosam festival in Thai ( Ambal and Moolavar are taken to Thamirabarani River and special poojas are conducted at Thaipoosa mandapam ), Pradosham, Mahashivaratri, Masi magam, Thiruvathirai, Karthikai worship, Chitra Pournami and all important functions. Temple golden car will be pulled on all important days and Rs 2000 is charged for individual pulling with a participation of two persons.

Arulmigu Kutralanathar Temple / Arulmigu Coutralanathar Swamy Temple / குற்றாலநாதர் கோவில், குற்றாலம், Kutralam / Courtallam, Tenkasi District, Tamil Nadu.

This is the 257th Thevara Paadal Petra Shiva sthalam  and 13th Shiva Sthalam in Pandya Naadu. This place was called as Courtallam and Kurumpala.  Also called in different names like Thirikoodachalam, Thirikooda malai, etc. Thirikooda Rasappa Kavirayar’s Thalapurana of this temple praises this place as வானரங்கள் கனி கொடுத்து மந்தொயொடு கொஞ்சும்..” This Chitra Sabha, is one of the Pancha Sabha where Lord Shiva Danced. ( Chitra – Drawing ).


As per Sekkizhar's Periya Puranam, Thirugnanasambandar went to the temples Tirupattur, Tiruppuvanam and Tiruchuli, 3rd time after he met Thirunavukkarasar. Whether Appar went along with him is not known. It was also mentioned that Appar had bee to Thirupugalur and Tirunelveli, in that Courtrallam is not mentioned.

Some of the important features of this temple are….
The temple is facing east with a 3 tier Rajagopuram. There are beautiful stucco images on the Rajagopuram with 3 Kalasas. Dwajasthambam, Rishabam and Balipeedam are after the Rajagopuram in vasantha mandapam. The temple is in the shape of conch ( Sangu ). The moolavar is small/ short. In koshtam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy ( not in the niche ), Mahavishnu in place of Lingothbavar. In the artha mandapam Urchavars and Natarajar Sabha.

In the inner prakaram Kumbamuni, Brahma, Saptamatrikas, Suradevar, Ayyanar, Brahmi, Thurayanar, Mahavishnu, Narasimhar, Kanni Vinayagar, Chandran, Vanmeekanathar, Jambukeswarar, Annamalaiyar, Kalathiappar, Thirumoolanathar ( Very small moortham ), Ramalingar, Subramaniyar, Chandikeswarar, Shaniswarar and Suryan.

In the outer prakaram Ambal is in a separate temple with a Rishabam and Balipedam are in front (  Kailasa Nathar and Durgai are in the Ambal temple’s prakaram  ) on the right side of moolavar sannadhi, Kurumbala Nathar ( from here we could hear the sound of main falls ), 63var, Nannagara perumal, Pabhanasar with Ulagamman, Nellaiappar with Gandhimathi, Manakolanathar, Narumbunathar, Sankaralingam, Palvannanathar, Chokkalingam with Meenakshi, Dharmasastha, Mathunatheswarar with Aramvalarthamman, Agasthiyar, Vasuki, Somalingam, Maha Lingam, Sakasralingam, Kashi Viswanathar with Visalakshi, Shivalaya Munivar ( 2 steps below the ground level ), Parasakthi Peedam and Navagrahas. The Main falls top view can be seen, near one of the sannadhi on the south side.

The maha mandapam pillars are with Chinna Pattar and Periyapattar Kings reliefs, who built this temple.  

This temple has two parts. One is this temple and the other is Chitra sabai which is about ½ a KM from the main temple.
 

The 15th Century Arunagirinathar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Muruga of this temple.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
Since Thirugnanasambandar has sung Hymns the temple might have been built before 7th Century. Latter the temple was reconstructed and extended during  Chozhas, Pandyas and Vijayanagaras. As per the Temple web site The present sanctum sanctorum was constructed ( re-construction ) by Rajarajan. Historians claims that there was a Maha Vishnu temple on the left side of the moolavar sannadhi.  During Pandya’s period Sanctum Sanctorum, Arthamandapam, Mahamandapam, Ambal Kuzhalvai Mozhiammai Sannadhi and Pillayar Kattalai mandapam were built.  During Nayak’s period  Paraskathi Sannadhi, Sangu/ conch prakara, inner prakara, Compound wall are built.  Thirikooda mandapam ( 100 pillar mandapa ), Pasupirai, Thattodi, Vaitheeyappa Vilasam, the front mandapam of kuzhalvai mozhi Amman, sangu prakaram  and paving of floor with stone in the vasantha prakaram / mandapam, were built by the Vadakarai Aathikkam Chokkampatti. During 1925 CE, Aralvaimozhi Temple was renovated  with the public participation.

There were about 89 inscriptions recorded from this temple. The earliest inscription belongs to Parantaka-I ( 927 – 943 CE). As per the inscriptions Lord Shiva was called as Thiru Kutrala Perumal, Kutrala devan, Mahadevan. The inscriptions manly records the endowments of burning perpetual lamps for which gifts were made like, cow, goat/ sheep, money etc,.  There was a mention about the eclipse and sacred bathing of the deities.

Pandya King Parakrama Pandya’s father 31st year’s ethir 2nd year ie 33rd year reign inscription ( AR 203 of 1895, SII Vol-V, 767 ) records that he had send his son, to this temple to solve the dispute between the Butters, since the poojas was  stopped. During the inquiry the Butters didn’t extend co-operation which made him angry. Parakrama Pandya made suitable changes in the land gifted to them as irayili and doing pooja of one day as a share per Buttars group.

The next inscription,  Pandya King Parakrama Pandya’s  31st year’s ethir 4th year ie 35th year reign inscription ( AR 204 of 1895, SII Vol-V, 768 ) also records the same dispute between the Batters  and pooja was stopped. The King once again made Changes in the Pooja schedule between them and suitable adjustment also done in the Irayili land. The Order was issued by the king in the form of palm leaf / olai message.

Pandya Kings Maran Chadayan’s 4th year & 360th day reign inscription ( AR 480 of 1917, SII XIV- 4) records the endowment of burning a perpetual lamp by Maran Achchan probably a petty Chief,  of Poliyur of Tiruppattur.

A Vattezhu inscription 2+7th year of Chadayan Maran  ( AR 416 of 1917, SII XIV- 53 ) records the endowment... incomplete...

The Pandya King Ko Chadayan Maran’s 2+9th year inscription ( AR 417 of 1917, SII XIV- 57 ) records the endowment of burning a half (1/2 ) perpetual lamp by Ayyakuttan of Idavai Manni Nadu  for which 3 saava moova buffaloes were gifted to this temple.

A Vattezhuthu inscription of Pandya King Sadaiyan Maran’s 2+9th year reign ( AR 418 of 1917, SII XIV- 58 ) records the endowment of  burning a perpetual lamp for which 6 saava moova  buffaloes were gifted by Vandaalai  KonAn of Nallur Pandi Kudikudi.

The Pandya King Sadaiyan Maran’s  2+15th year reign inscription ( AR 440 of 1917, SII XIV- 66 ) records the  ... becoming the managing the temple affairs by a Pasupatha sect... the inscription is incomplete and damaged in many portions.

In a lattest inscription dated Kollam 1108 ( Sri muga year Ani 19th ) records that thirupani was done and mahakumbhabhishekam was conducted by Kasi Viswanatha Chettiyar of Devakottai. 

LEGENDS
It is believed that the sage Agasthiyar had changed the Mahavishnu murti in to a Shiva Linga. The legend goes like this.... During the celestial wedding, all the Devas, Maharishis gathered at Kailash Due to this the north went down and south raised up. To balance the earth Lord Shiva asked Agasthiyar  to go to South. On the was Agasthiyar installed many Shiva Lingas and worshiped. Finally he reached this Thirikooda malai or Podhikai hills. He was not allowed to enter inside the temple by the Dwarapalakas. Ilanji Kumaran came to his rescue and made him to enter in to the temple. Agasthiyar transformed the Mahavishnu murti in to Shiva Linga, by saying 'kuru kuru kutralanathre !', which was initially in the sanctum. Agasthiyar's finger prints are on the Moolavar. He also changed Sridevi in to Kuzhalvai Mozhiyammai,  and Bhoodevi in to Parasakthi.

Apart from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on Pradosham, Maha Shivaratri, Panguni Uthram, Thai month maha nakshathra day theppotsavam, Kanda sashti festival, Aipasi Thirukalyanam festival, Avani moolam festival, Adi moolam patra deepam festival, 10 days Markazhi thiruvathirai festival, 9 days Navaratri festival and 10 days Chithirai Vishu festival.

The temple is close to the Main falls at Courtallam can be reached easily from Tenkasi. The place Tenkasi is on the bus and train route to Shenkottai from Tirunelveli, Madurai, Chennai etc.
Podhigai express passes through Tenkasi.
Lot of Town and mini buses are available to Courtallam from Thenkasi during Chaaral season and frequency is less during non season.
The temple is 7.5 KM from Tenkasi & Shenkottai, 20.5 KM from Kadayanallur, 73 KM from Rajapalayam, 65 KM from Tirunelveli, 154 KM from Madurai and 623 KM from Chennai.
Nearest Railway Station is Tenkasi.

CHITRA SABHA, COURTALLAM
The Chitra Sabhai, is about a ½ a KM from the main temple after climbing steps to a distance of 50 meters. The Sabha is open to public and the entrance fee was Rs 10.

Some of the features of this sabha are….
The Chitra Sabhai is one of the 5 Sabhas, where Lord Shiva danced. ( The other Places are, Rathna Sabha - Thiruvalangadu, Velli Ambalam - Madurai - Thamira (Copper ) Sabha - Tirunelveli and Gold ambalam - Chidambaram )a separate temple and temple tank is in front with a neerazhi mandapam. There is no pictures in the front mandapam of  Chitra sabhai. Learned that the Chitrams / paintings were drawn using the natural herbs. The Sabai is in the form of a temple with thamira  / copper plated  roof with 8 kalasas on the top.

In the outer side / prakara Paintings of Oorthuva Thandavar, Bhathra Kali, Murugan, Soorapadman, Singamugan, Dharahan, Manmathan, Rathi, The front mandapa is with kodungai looks beautiful.

In the Inner prakara Various forms of Durga, Veerabhadra, Gajendramoksham, Thiruvilayadal Purana, 63 var images, Maha Vishnu as Ananda Padmanabha, Hiranya Samharam, Various form of Bhairavas and Shani Bhagwan,

Sabha inner has the paintings of Natarajar With Sivakami, and Devas worshiping Lord Shiva,  Lord Shiva With Parvati Thirukalyanam, Kutralanathar gives darshan to sage Agasthiyar, Subramaniyar, Vinayagar’s various postures, etc.  On 8th day peruvizha Lord Shiva will come to Chitra Sabha. Wooden reliefs / sirpam of Vinayagars can also be seen.
