During my last visit to Padur, I couldn’t visit this temple since
I was not aware of this temple’s antiquity. This time, after visiting Sri Bhama
Rukmani Krishna Temple at Padur.
Moolavar
: Sri Chenganmaleeswarar
Consort
: Sri Periyanayagi.
Some of the salient features of this temple are….
The
temple faces east, with the temple pond (Vishnu Theertham) on the right. A
peepal tree with Nagars is in front of the entrance arch cum Mandapam. Ambal
Sri Periyanayagi Amman is immediately after the entrance, a temple
like a sannidhi facing south. Balipeedam, Dwajasthambam, and Rishabam are in front of the main sanctum, Mandapam. Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Vishnu, Brahma, and
Durgai are in the Koshtam.
In the
outer praharam sannadhi for Vinayagar, Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Thavvai (Jyeshta Devi), Gajalakshmi, Chandikeswarar, Navagrahas, Bhairavar, and Suryan.
ARCHITECTURE
The
sanctum sanctorum consists of the sanctum, antarala, and Artha Mandapam. Vinayagar
and Subramaniyar are in the artha mandapam. A Vesara Vimanam is over the sanctum.
The sanctum sanctorum is on a padabandha adhistanam.
HISTORY
AND INSCRIPTIONS
12th-century Chozha period inscriptions are found on the adhistanam. Nayak period
inscriptions are also found on the walls, which had undergone thirupani during the latter period. However, the temple authorities claim that the temple was
built during the 6th Century by Ko-Chengat Chozha.
There were seven
inscriptions recorded from this temple. As per the inscriptions, Shiva is
called Jayamkonda Chozhamandalathu Amoor Kottathu Kumizhinattu Thaiyur
Udaiyar Senganmal ThanmadavaLa Nayanar. This place was a part of Thaiyur alias
Rajasimhamangalam, and Thaiyur was called Thalasayanapuram in 8th-
9th century.
Kambavaraman’s
period inscription records that Somappa Thandanayakar, the Chieftain of
Kambavarman, issued an order to Rajanarayana Sambuvaraiyar, who in turn issued a palm
leaf inscription to give donations to this temple for worship and maintenance
as sarmanyam from the tax collected.
Saka 1442, 1520
CE, the Pandya King Thirubhuvana Chakravarthy Maravarman’s period inscription
records Shiva’s name as Chenganmal
ThanmadavaLa Nayanar.
An Alankara
mandam was established by the Pathinen Nattu Nagarathar, a separate Merchant
Group. Also, some taxes are exempted for some travellers.
The Pandya King
Jadavarman Sundarapandya’s 13th-century (13th Century)
inscription records that the taxes are regulated for those residing in the
Thirumandiravalakam. In that the officials Vijayabalan and Varagunarayar participated.
1520 CE
inscription records the endowment of poojas and maintenance at Kumizhi Nattu
Ayiramveli PaRRu Rajakesari Nallur alias Thaiyur Sri Senganmaleeswarar Temple,
by Thazhuvakuzhainthan Battan’s son Chellappar Veeranarasimharaya Nayakar. For
the same, a village separated from Araiyancherry, in Sengazhuneerpattu
(Chengalpattu) and 10 salt pans.
The 18th-century
inscription Senganmal was a part of Thaiyur alias Irandayiramveli PaRru.
The stone image
of Vijayarayar, who had done Thirupani in this temple.
The 1909
inscription below the images of the Donors, in Mukha Mandapam, records that
Ratna Chettiar’s son Namasivaya Chettiar and his wife Thaiyyammal were the
Trustees of this temple.
The 1912 inscription records that records the donation made by Subbu Chettiar and
Peruntha Chettiar.

Nayak period inscriptions
The Chozha King, who constructed the temple, worships Lord Shiva
LEGENDS
As per the Legend,
after Jalandharan vatham, Vishnu worshipped Lord Shiva with 1000 lotus flowers to
get the Chakrayutham. Lord Shiva made the last flower disappear. Vishnu
removed one of his eyes and completed the pooja. Hence, Lord Shiva is called Chenganmaaleeswarar. This same legend is also associated with 3
more Shiva temples.

The temple will be
kept open from 07.00 hrs to 12.00 hrs, and from 16.30 hrs to 20.30 hrs.
HOW TO REACH:
Chenganmal is on the
Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR), 6 km before Thiruporur and 2.5 km from
Kelambakkam.
