Sri Nalmaniswarar Temple at Kathankanni, near Dharapuram, Tiruppur District, Tamil Nadu - A PART OF KONGU TEMPLES.

The original name of Karrankaani (donated to those who learned the 4 Vedas) was later corrupted to the present name as place Kathankanni. During the Chozha period, this Kathankannai was also called Veera Chozhachathurvedhamangalam.

Some of the important features of this temple are…

The temple faces east with a Rishabam and a balipeedam on the banks of the river Noyyal. Rishabam is not facing straight but is facing down. Ambal and Vinayagar (holding amrutha kalasa) are in the ardha mandapam. There are no Kostas. The outer praharam sannidhi for Bairavar, Saneeswarar, Chandikeswarar, Nagars, and Sri Chokka Perumal, also called Azhaguraja Perumal (Moolavar was shifted to this sannidhi since the original temple was in ruins – will be covered in a separate post).

The Moolavar is swayambhu, worshipped by Suryan (sunlight falls on Moolavar on the 12^th & 13^th of Panguni month), Nakulan, one of the Pancha Pandavas (got back his kingdom), and Kuladheivam for 9 sub-sects of Kongu Vellalars. It was said that Moolavar swayambhu is growing.

ARCHITECTURE

The temple consists of a sanctum sanctorum, artha mandapam, and a meta-colour sheet muka mandapam. The sanctum was built with a simple pada bandha adhisthana. A single-tier vimana is on the top of the sanctum. 

HISTORY & INSCRIPTION

The Sanctum adhistanam has the inscriptions of 12th-century Kongu Chozha Kulothungan, 12th-century Kongu Chozha Uthama Chozha Veera Narayana, 13th-century Kongu Chozha Veera Rajendran, 14th-century Hoysala King, Veera Ballala Thevar-III, and 16th-century Ummathur Nanjanarayar. The inscriptions mainly record donations made to this temple for the burning of perpetual lamps, Naivedyam for the Lord, Abhishekam, and the reciting of Thiruvempavai. The 16th-century inscriptions speak about the exemption of certain taxes for Kaikola Mudaliars. போசாள அரசர் வீரவள்ளாதேவர் – III, (14^th பொயு) கல்வெட்டு பிரமதேயமான கற்றாயன்காணி வீரசோழச் சதுர்வேதி மங்கலத்துப் புல்லூர் பாரத்வாஜி அரியபொருள் விண்டுவரப் பெருமாளான விக்கிர பாண்டியப் பிராமணராயர், அவர் மகன் சிங்கப்பெருமான் அல்லாள நாதன் ஆகியோரிடம் இக்கோயில் சிவப்பிராமணர் மூவர் 50 பணம் மூலப் பொருளாகப் பெற்று மார்கழித் திருவெம்பாவை, திருவாதிரைப் பெரிய திருமஞ்சனம், ஆடி அயனம் ஆகியவை நடத்த ஒப்புக் கொண்டதை பதிவு செய்கின்றது. திருவெம்பாவை விழா 10 நாள் நடத்தப்பட்டது. மூன்றாம் வீரவல்லாளன் ஆண்டு கூறும் பகுதி அழிந்து விட்டது.

போசாள அரசர் வீரவள்ளாதேவர் – III, (14^th பொயு) நின்மணீஸ்வரர் கோயில் வடக்கு சுவர் கல்வெட்டு, உடையபிராட்டிச் சதுர்வேதி மங்கலத்து விசுவாமித்ர கோத்திர திருநாரணபுரத்துப்பிள்ளை ஜெநநாத பிரமாதராயன் விளக்கு வைத்தமையை பதிவு செய்கின்றது.

கொங்கு சோழர் குலோத்துங்க சோழரின் 14ம் ஆட்சியாண்டு (1221 பொயு) கல்வெட்டின்படி நின்மணீசுவரருக்கு வீரராசேந்திரன் நேரடியாக அளித்த கொடை. குறுப்பு நாட்டுத் தென்பகுதிக்கு வீரசோழ வளநாடு என்று பெயர். கிரகணம் ஏற்பட்டபோது அதனால் வரும் தீமைகளைத் தவிர்க்க வரி எதுவும் இல்லாத ஆறு மா நிலத்தை வீரசோழச் சதுர்வேதிமங்கலம் ஆகிய கத்தாங்கண்ணி நின்மணீசுவரருக்குக் கொடையாக அளிக்கப்பட்ட விபரம் கூறப்பட்டுள்ளது. இக் கல்வெட்டின் இறுதிப் பகுதி மூலம் வீரராசேந்திரனின் கொடை என்பது தெரிகிறது.

கொங்கு சோழர் குலோத்துங்க சோழரின் 10ஆம் ஆட்சியாண்டு (1158 பொயு) கல்வெட்டு கத்தாங்கண்ணி நின்மணீசுவரர் கோயிலில் அவினாசி வீரப்பபெருமாள் வீரபாணம் பெருமாள் ஆகியோர் திருமுகத்தின் படி அளித்த 15 கழஞ்சு பொன்னால் சிவபிராமணர் இருவர் நாள்தோறும் அம்மனுக்கு நாழி அரிசியால் திருஅமுது படைக்கவும் ஐந்து விளக்குகள் எரிக்கவும் ஒப்புக்கொண்டதைப் பதிவு செய்கின்றது. 

கொங்குசோழர் உத்தமசோழ வீர நாராயணனின் இரண்டாம் ஆட்சியாண்டு கல்வெட்டு (1129 பொயு) வீரசோழச் சதுர்வேதி மங்கலத்து சிவபிராமணன் ஒருவனுக்கு அளித்த உரிமைகளைப் பதிவு செய்கின்றது. அவிப்பலிம் அர்ச்சனை, மாணபோகம், பரிகல பாத்ரசேஷம், கிராம மரியாதை (மறி ஜாதி), இவைகளை இவனும் இவன் வழியினரும் பெறலாம் என்றும், இவை விலைக்கு விற்கவும், ஒற்றி வைக்கவும், தானமளிக்கவும் உரிமையுடையது என்றும் கூறப்பட்டுள்ளது.

உம்மத்தூர் அரசு நஞ்சணராயர் (1518 பொயு) தனி பலகைக் கல்வெட்டு, திரிபுவனத்து இராசாக்கள் தம்பிரான்  பராக்கிரம பாண்டிய தேவர் மகன் இராகூத்தப் பெருமாள் கற்றாயன்காணியில் கைக்கோளருக்கு கொடுத்த சில உரிமைகள் பற்றியதைப் பதிவு செய்கின்றது. குறிப்பிட்ட சில வரிகள் தவிர ஏனையவை நீக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. இவர்களது தெருவில் வசிக்கும் தட்டார் கணக்கர் ஆகியோரும் குறிக்கப்படுகின்றனர். இவர்கள் தெரு என்பதால் மற்றவர்கட்குக் கைக்கோள முதலியார்களுக்குரிய உரிமைகள் இல்லை என ஊகிக்கலாம். நஞ்சணராயர் அரிகரராயர் குமாரன் என்று கூறப்படுகிறார். இந்நஞ்சணராயனை கிருஷ்ணதேவராயர் காலத்திலிருந்த உம்மத்தூர்த் தலைவர்ளில் ஒருவன் என கோவைக் கிழார இராமச்சந்திரன் செட்டியார் கூறியுள்ளார்.

TEMPLE TIMINGS:

The temple will be kept open from 10.00 hrs to 12.00 hrs, and from 17.00 hrs to 19.00 hrs on Fridays, and it will be extended to 20.00 hrs.
