HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
This place Samayapuram was called Samayavaram, Kannanur, Kannapuram, Vikramapuram, Mahakalipuram, etc,. (But Still, this place is called S Kannanur). As per Gazetteer, in 1752, there were two temples at Samayapuram, Mariamman Temple and Bhojeswara Temple and this place was called Kannanur. The Europeans/French and sepoys used these Temples during the war with the British, (Marathas and Tanjore troops stayed outside). From the inscription at Jambukeswara Temple Bhojeswara Temple at Samayapuram was founded by Hoysala Ballala King and Kannanur is itself identified as the site of Vikramapuram, the Hoysala Capital in the Chozha Country in the 13th Century. From this, it was presumed that this Mariamman temple was also constructed during the same period by the Hoysalas. The Copperplate edict of Vira Someshwara in the Bangalore Museum was issued on Mach 1st, 1253 CE, the day of the eclipse of the Sun, “while the king was residing in the great Capital named Vikramapuram, Which had been built to amuse his mind in the Chozha country, which he had conquered by the power of his arm”.

Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 05th Feb 2007 and 06th Feb 2017.

LEGENDS
As per the legend during Krishna avatara, Krishna was born to Devaki, and Mayadevi was born to Yasodha. They were interchanged as per the wish of Lord Maha Vishnu to kill Kamsa. Kamsa tried to kill Mayadevi,  thinking that the girl child was born to Devaki. When Kamsa lifted Mayadevi, she appeared as Maha Mariamman with 8 hands holding a bow, arrow, Trishul, Pasam, shankha/conch, Chakram, and Sword.

As per the hearsay, the Utsava idol of Mariamman was taken by the Vijayanagaras at the fake end of their ruling through this place. When the people stayed here for a while keeping Utsavar in a palanquin on the ground. When the people tried to lift, they couldn’t do so. So the Vijayanagara King Vijayaranga Chokkanathar installed the Utsavar at this place itself. There is a saying based on this legend. The saying goes like this as … சாய்ந்தாள் சமயுபுரம், சாதித்தாள் கண்ணபுரம்.

Devotees pray to Mariamman for child boon, to get relief from various problems like eye problems, and ailments in various parts of the body. As a part of Thanksgiving Devotees offer Kanmalar, parts of a body, salt & pepper, abhishekam to Balipeedam, lighting mavilakku on the eyes, stomach, etc,. In the case of a Child boon as a part of thanksgiving, husband and wife carry the Child in a cloth cradle tied on a bundle of sugarcane. Devotees also do angapradakshinam,  tonsuring the head, offer goats/Cocks  and Thulabharam ie payment equivalent of weight, etc.
