The
visit to this Sri Ellai Amman Temple at Perumbairkandigai was a part of the “Shiva,
Maha Vishnu, and Amman Temples Visit” in Perumbairkandigai and Orathy on 14th
April 2024. This is one of the famous Amman Temples of Perumbairkandigai and
also a village-guarding deity.

Some
of the salient features of this temple are….
The
temple faces east with Balipeedas, a Kanthu, and Nagars. Stucco images of Amman
killing the Asura are on the top of the mandapams. Balipeedam and Simha
vahanam are in the mandapam. In sanctum sanctorum, the Amman is in stucco, in
sitting posture. A head-size Amman is installed in front of the Stucco image.
Poojas are offered to the head of Amman. In Praharam, Nagars are in two places.
ARCHITECTURE
The
temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam, and maha
mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is rectangular in shape on a pada bandha
adhistanam with jagathy, three patta kumudam, and pattikai. The Bhitti starts
with vedikai. The pilasters are of Brahma kantha pilasters with kalasam, kudam,
palakai and vettu pothyal. The Prastaram consists of valapi, kapotam with
nasikudus, and viyyalavari. The Vimanam above prastaram is of salakara style
with one Tala, greevam and sigaram with 3 kalasas. Amman’s various forms are on
the vimanam.
HISTORY
AND INSCRIPTIONS
It
is believed that the temple is more than 500 Years old and may have been constructed
during the Vijayanagara Nayaka period.
Jeernodharana Ashta Nandhana Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 24th June 1999. The
temple is under the Control of the HR & CE Department.
LEGENDS
Usually, these Ellai (boundary of Village) guarding deities are installed to protect the Villages to avoid
diseases, evil spirits, etc, entering into the Village and protecting the Village.

AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart
from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on Fridays, Sundays, Pournami,
Amavasya days, Adi month 4th Friday, the annual festival with Theemithi Thiruvizha / fire walk, etc.
Devotees
consider this Ellaiamman as Kula Deivam and conduct Marriages, tonsuring, and ear boring ceremonies of their children at this temple.
