The visit to this Hari Sabha Bayam Theertheswarar temple on Nellukara Street, Periya Kanchipuram, was a part of the 2020 Maha Shivaratri Temples Visit, on 21^st February 2020. After Sri Macheswarar Temple’s Visit, our next destination was this temple. 

The 18^th Century Sivagnana Swamigal  had written this temple’s sthala purana in Kanchi Puranam. The sthala Purana describes Vishnu worshiping Lord Shiva to get rid of a Sabam / Curse, which is written in detail under legend. The 4 songs out of  9 are reproduced as given below...

புரிமு றுக்குடைந் தவிழ வாறடிப் புள்மு

      ரன்றுவாய் மடுக்கும் இன்னறை

விரிம லர்த்தடம் புடையு டுத்தசித் தீச

      மேன்மையின் விளைவி யம்பினாம்

உரிய மற்றதன் உத்த ரத்துறும் உவண

      வூர்தியாச் சிரம வைப்பினில்

திரிவி லாவரி சாப வெம்பயந் தீர்த்த

      வானவன் சீர்த்தி கூறுவாம் 

சுராசுரர் கலகம் - மாதவன் கியாதியைக் கோறல்

செப்பு முன்னைநாள் அதிதி மைந்தருந் திதியின்

      மக்களும் இடைய றாதுபே

ரப்பு மாரிபெய் தெண்ணி லாண்டுகள் அழுக்க

      றுத்துவெஞ் சமரி யற்றுழி

மைப்பு றுத்தகண் அரம்பை மார்முலை யுழுத

      மார்பினார் வலியி ழத்தலும்

துப்பெ றிந்தபூங் கமல வாள்விழித் தோன்றல்

      எய்திவெம் பைடவி திர்த்தனன்

* அதிதிமைந்தர்- தேவர். திதியின் மக்கள்- அசுரர்.அதிதி, திதி இருவரும்

காசிபரின் மைனவியர். அழுக்கறுத்து – பொறாமையுற்று.

எஞ்சு தானவர் அஞ்சி ஓட்டெடுத் திருமை

      யோகுசெய் பிருகு மாமுனி

தஞ்ச மாமைனக் கிழத்தி பூமகள் தாயெ

      னப்படுங் கியாதி தன்புடை

வஞ்சம் இன்றிவந் தைடக்க லம்புக வருந்து

      றேன்மினென் றபய நல்கியப்

பஞ்சின் மெல்லடிப் பாவை ஆச்சிர மத்தின்

      உள்ளுறப் பாது காத்தனள்.

இன்னும் ஓர்வரம் வேண்டுவல் எளியேனற் குன்பால்

      மன்னும் மேதகும் உழுவலன் பருள்மதி வள்ளால்

பன்னும் இவ்வரி சாபெவம் பயந்தவிர் இலிங்கந்

      தன்னில் என்றும்நீ அமர்ந்தருள் என்றலும் தலைவன். 

வேட்ட யாவையும் வழங்கினன் உவைகமீ தூர்ந்து

      பாட்ட ளிக்குலம் விருந்தயர் பசுந்துழாய் மார்பன்

தோட்ட லர்க்கரங் குவித்தெதிர் நிற்பமுச் சுடராம்

      நாட்டம் மூன்றுடை நாயகன் இலிங்கத்தின் மறைந்தான்

Some of the important details are...

The temple faces east with a small entrance Gopuram. The approach was encroached upon by Kattathotti/firewood shop.  Balipeedam and Rishabam are after the entrance. The temple consists of a sanctum sanctorum, an artha mandapam, and a mukha mandapam. Stucco image of Vishnu worshiping Lord Shiva, Shiva Lingam on the top of the mukha mandapam. In the prakaram Chandikeswarar.

LEGEND:

As per the Kanchi Puranam, during the war between Devas and Asuras, the Asuras were frightened and surrendered to Birugu Muni’s wife Kiyathi, mother of Sri Lakshmi. Vishnu killed Kiyathi, even not considered a woman or a mother-in-law, for offering shelter to the Asuras. Angered, Bhrigu cursed Vishnu to take ten births and suffer in Narakaloka. Birugu, with the help of Sukra, gave life to his wife Kiyathi. To get rid of the curse / sabam (சாபம்), Vishnu worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple.

Since oru kala pooja is conducted, the closing and opening times are unpredictable.

HOW TO REACH:

The temple is about 100 meters from Kanchipuram Bus Stand, 1.7 km from Kanchipuram Railway Station, 30.0 km from Arakkonam, and 70 km from Chennai.

The nearest Railway Station is Kanchipuram, and the Railway Junction is Arakkonam.
