Sri Mariamman Temple / Muthalamman Temple / ஸ்ரீ முத்தாலம்மன் கோயில், Valappandal, Ranipet District, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to this Sri Muthalamman temple at Valappandal was a part of the “Pallava period Shiva, Amman, and Jain Temples Visit” in Tiruvannamalai and Ranipet Districts on 3rd September 2023. Thanks to Mrs. Radhabalan of Kanchipuram for taking me to these temples. This Temple is on the north bank of the River Cheyyar.

Some of the salient features of this temple are…..
The temple faces east with a three-tier Rajagopuram and 2 Kanthus with Pavadairayar’s images. Simha vahana with balipeedam is in front of the temple. Stucco images of Vinayagar and Murugan are on both sides of the mandapam. Amman, Kamakshi Amman, Vinayagar, Muthalamman, Murugan, Annapoorani, and Saraswati are on the top of the mandapam.

Sri Muthalamman is in the sanctum in a sukhasana sitting posture with 4 hands. While the upper hands are holding Damaru & Trishul, the lower hands are holding a big knife and a bowl.  In koshtam Amman’s various forms.

In the praharam, Vinayagar sannidhi is on the left side with a small door, Nagars (an Amman’s image and a Lady holding snakes and two snakes on the head are in the Nagar’s Group), etc.




ARCHITECTURE
The temple is about 4 to 5 feet below the ground and road Level. The total temple may be 300 to 400 years old and built with brick and lime mortar. The main temple sanctum sanctorum wall is supported by a slanting wall. An eka tala vesara vimanam is over the sanctum sanctorum. Stucco images of Muthalamman, Vinayagar, Vaishnavi, and Brahmi are in the greeva koshtam. In addition, stucco images of Shiva & Parvati and Amman’s various forms are on the parapet wall of the mandapam. 

The Rajagopuram was built in recent years.




HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The outside road level compared to the ground level of the temple indicates the temple may be 300 to 400 years old. The Rajagopuram was built in recent years.

LEGENDS
The devotees from far-off places visit this temple, considered a Kula Deivam temple. Important functions like tonsuring and ear-boring ceremonies are conducted in the temple.

Devotees pray to this Muthalamman to remove marriage obstacles and Child boon.

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from oru kala pooja, special poojas are conducted on Fridays, Sundays, and Aadi Fridays. The annual festival will be conducted during the month of Aadi.

The temple will be kept open from 07.00 hrs to 10.00 hrs, and from 17.00 hrs to 19.00 hrs.
