Sri Kailasanathar Temple/ஸ்ரீ கைலாசநாதர் திருக்கோயில்/ வலங்கைமான் சிவன் கோவில், Valangaiman, Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to this Sri Kailasanathar Temple at Valangaiman was a part of the Shiva and Vishnu temples visit on 08th March 2025, the previous day of the “Sembiyan Mahadeviyar Temples Heritage Tour” organized by கும்பகோணம் வட்டார வரலாற்று ஆய்வு சங்கம், on 09th March 2025. This place, Valangaiman, is on the banks of the Kudamurti River.

Some of the salient features of this temple are….
The temple faces east with an entrance arch and a 3-tier Rajagopuram. Stucco images of Shiva’s various forms, like Oorthuva Tahndavar, Bairavar, Vinayagar, Murugan, and Kali, are on the Rajagopuram. Balipeedam and Rishabam are in the mukha mandapam. Murugan and Vinayagar are on both sides of the sanctum sanctorum entrance. In koshtam, Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma, and Durgai. Utsava Lingothbavar’s antilope (man) and mazhu are interchanged.

In the praharam, Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Chandikeswarar, Gajalakshmi, Navagrahas, Patala Lingam, Bairavars, Chatur kala Bairavars, stucco images of Shiva and Parvati as Rishabaroodar, Vinayagar, Murugan, Agora Lingam, Vama Deva Lingam, and Sathyojatha Lingam.

Ambal is in a separate temple with sanctum sanctorum, antarala, and mukha mandapam. Ambal is in a standing posture facing east with abhaya varada hastam.

ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of the sanctum sanctorum, the ardha mandapam, and the maha mandapam.  The sanctum sanctorum is on a pada bandha adhistanam with jagathy, threepatta kumudam, and pattikai. The Bhitti starts with vedikai. The pilasters are Vishnu kantha pilasters with kalasam kudam, palakai with lotus petals, and pushpa pothyal. The prastaram consists of valapi with bhuta ganas and kapotam with nasi kudus. An Eka tala vesara vimanam is on the bhumi desam. Stucco images of Shiva, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, and Brahma are on the tala and greeva koshtams.

The mandapas are of vavval nethi mandapas built during the Maratha period.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The temple belongs to the 11th to 12th Chozha period. Later, Vavvalnethi mandapas were added during the Maratha period.

Apart from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on pradosham, Maha Shivaratri, Vinayagar Chaturthi, etc.

The temple will be kept open from 07.00 hrs to 11.00 hrs and from 17.00 hrs to 20.00 hrs.

HOW TO REACH
The place Valangaiman is on the banks of the Kudamurutti River, is on the Kumbakonam to Mannargudi route, after Thippirajapuram.
The temple is about 2.1 km from Thippirajapuram, 8 km from Nachiar Koil, 9 km from Kumbakonam, and 28 km from Mannargudi.
The nearest Railway Station is Kumbakonam.
