Sri Lakshmi Narasimmar Temple / ஶ்ரீ லக்ஷ்மி நரசிம்மர் கோயில், Avaniyapuram, Tiruvannamalai District, Tamil Nadu.

The Visit to this Sri Lakshmi Narasimhar Temple at Avaniyapuram was a part of “Narasimha Temples Visit in Kanchipuram and Tiruvannamalai Districts”, on 24th March 2024, ie Panguni Uthiram day conducted by Bhakthi Ula, Pattabhi of Ashok Medicals Velachery, Chennai. Apart from Narasimhar Temples, Vallakottai Sri Subramaniar Temple, Thennangur Pandurangan Temple and Perunagar Jyeshta Devi are also Covered in this visit. Avani in Sanskrit means Simham, hence this place is called as Avaniyapuram, Avani Narayanapuram etc,. This temple is also called as Dakshina Ahobilam, Simma malai, etc,.

Some of the salient features of this temple are…
The temples are facing east in two levels. An entrance arch is at the beginning of Steps. Sri Lakshmi Narasimhar Sannadhi is at the first level with about 60 steps. Dwajasthambam and Balipeedam are before the Rajagopuram. Three tier Rajagopuram is at the entrance of the Temple. There are two Garudalwars, of which one Garudan is with Simha face. The darshan will be from a long distance, and difficult to recognise the face of moolavar and Lakshmi. Lakshmi is sitting on the left laps of Narasimhar. Maha Lakshmi is also with Simha face. It was told that the sanctum sanctorum is a Rock Cut Cave. 

Thayar Alarmel Mangai is in a separate sannidhi. The utsava murthi is with three eyes. Alwars, Utsavars, Anjaneyar, Srinivasa Perumal with Sridevi and Bhudevi, Sudharsanar are in the mandapam. Pancha Narasimhars – Veera Narasimhar, Hiranya Narasimhar, Ugra Narasimhar,  Prahalad Narasimhar and Mangala Narasimhar along with two Nagars. All the 5 Narasimhars are facing South.

At the top level the sannidhi for Sri Vadaraja Perumal similar to Sri Tirupati balaji.  The other sannidhis are Lakshmi Narasimhar, Maha Lakshmi, Anandha sayana Perumal as Ranganathar with Ranganayagi, Yoga Narasimhar with Amirthavalli Thayar, Varadaraja Perumal & Perundevi Thayar and Srinivasa Perumal with Alarmel Mangai. This is also called as pancha divya desa murti’s temple ie Kanchipuram, Sholingur, Srirangam, Tirupati and Ahobilam.

ARCHITECTUTE
This Hill consists of two Temples. The one temple at the middle of the Hill has Garudan Two Garudalwars and one is with Simha face, Balipeedam and Deepa sthambam. A Dwajasthambam is in front of Rajagopuram. A 3 tier Rajagopuram is at the entrance of the temple. An eka tala Vesara Vimanam is on the sanctum sanctorum.  It was told that the sanctum sanctorum is of rock cut cave.



The top level Sanctum sanctorum was built with stone up to prastaram. An ekatala Vesara Vimanam is on the sanctum sanctorum. Stucco image of Maha Vishnu’s various form are in the greeva koshtam.




HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
As per the temple’s display board the temple belongs to Pallava period and received contributions in 12th Century also.

The construction of steps was started on 03rd May 1993. The Steps from Middle level to Top level ( 130 Steps ) ie up to Venkatachalapathy temple was started on 10th July 1992.

The entrance arch construction was sponsored by Er Parasuraman, Varalakshmi, Ramalingam and Vendal, on 11th Dec 2000.

Lakshmi Narasimhar sannidhi Upper Ceiling maha mandapam was constructed on August 1999.

Upper Level Sri Venkatachalapathy temple’s Dwajasthambam was installed on 15th September 2014.

Maha samprokshanam was conducted on 07th March 2024.  The temple is under the Control of Ahobila mutt.






LEGENDS
It is believed that Lakshmi Narashimhar gave darshan to Brugu Maharishi, Vashistar, Devars. It is further believed that Devas still stayed as veppalai Trees on the hill and worships Lakshmi Narasimhar of the temple.

Lakshmi Narasimhar legend is associated with Bhakta Prahalath story. After killing Hiranyakasibu, Narasimhar was very ferocious. To make Narasimhar calm, Maha Lakshmi was asked sit on the laps of Narasimhar. After Maha Lakshmi, sat Narasimhar become calm. Hence Narasimhar is called as Lakshmi Narasimhar. 

5 Narasimha’s are sitting in a row facing South direction. Hence the devotees worships Lakshmi Narasimhar to get rid of Yama bayam.

Devotees prays to Venkatachalapathy on the upper level to get rid of enemies trouble and get rid of debt. Devotees also worships for marriage and Children boon.


POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on Vaikunta ekadasi, Narasimhar Jayanthi in the month Vaikasi, Thirukarthigai, Masi maham, Krishna jayanthi, hanuman Jayanthi, Brahmotsavam in the months chithirai and Puratasi, etc.

Sarvathari Year ( a Tamil Year which comes once in 6o years ), 9th Day of Aani month is celebrated in a big manner, since Thayar has got the simha face on that day.

HOW TO REACH
This place Avaniyapuram is about 9 KM from Injimedu Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple.
This temple in Injimedu is at the centre of Arani ( 17.3 KM ), Cheyyar ( 24 KM ), Vandavasi ( 31 KM ) and Chetpet ( 23 KM ).
Buses are available, Polur, Route No 148 from Chennai, Route No 105 from Chennai to Vandavasi ( 26th KM from Arani to Vandavasi Road ), Route No 59 from Cheyyar, 241 from Kanchipuram, Private buses Renugambal and Rangasamy.

This temple is also called as Dakshina Ayothi, and Narasmhapuram Third of the Pancha Rame Kshetram of Tiruvannamalai.

Some of the salient features of this temple are…
The temple is facing east with a 5 tier Rajagopuram. Balipeedam, Dwajasthambam and Garudan are after the Rajagopuram. Dwarapalakas are at the entrance of ardha mandapam. Moolavar is in standing posture with abhaya varada hastam. Sridevi and Bhudevi are on both sides.

In Praharam Sudharsanar/ Narasimhar, Perundevi Thayar, Ramar ( Yagna Ramar  and Narasimhar is on the bow of Rama is unique ) with Sita and Lakshmana, Andal and Lakshmi Narasimhar. . 



ARCHITECTUTE
The total temple was reconstructed with bricks and cement concrete during recent years. The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam and mukha mandapam. A two tier dravida Vimanam is on the sanctum sanctorum. Maha Visnu’s various avatar stucco images are on the 1st tala and greeva koshtams. The Vimanam is called as Puniyakoti Vimanam.

Stucco images of Maha Vishnu’s Dasavatara is on both sides of Rajagopuram and on the mandapam parapet walls.




HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
It is believed that the original temple is more than 500 years old and the same was reconstructed during recent years.

The temple is under the Control of Ahobila mutt. Sri Sadagopaparamaajar Desikan and Sriranga Sadagopa Yatheenthira Desikan of this place Injimedu held the position of 34th Pattam and 42nd Pattam of Ahobila mutt.

Jeernodharana maha samprokshanam was conducted in 2023.

Sri Panduranga Swamy Temple / தென்னாங்கூர் பாண்டுரங்கன் கோயில், Thennangur, Tiruvannamalai District, Tamil Nadu.

Some of the salient features of this temple are…
The temple is facing east with a 5 tier Rajagopuram. Nagars are on before the Rajagopuram. The other three direction Rajagopuras are of 3 tiers. The Sthala vruksham ( Thamala Vruksham ), Balipeedam, and Garudan are after the Rajagopuram. Dwarapalakas are in metal / Panchaloka on both sides of the ardha mandapam. Moolavar Pandurangan is about 7 feet tall and they are in Rajasthani style Raja and Rani Alangaram ( during our Visit ). The Idols worshipped by Sri Haridhos Giri Swamigal. And Utsavars are in front of moolavar.

ARCHITECTUTE
The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam, maha mandapam and a mukha mandapam. The total temple was built with cement concrete. The temple was built similar to Puri Jagannath Temple ie North Indian style. But the 4 entrance Rajagopurams are built in south Indian style at a latter date.

Krishna leela and Krishna related drawing panels are in the ardha mandapam maha mandapam adorn the walls and ceilings.





HISTORY  AND INSCRIPTIONS
The end of 20th Century temple was built by Sri Haridhos Giri Swamigal, the disciple of Sri Gnananda Swamigal. The temple is at present administered by Namanandagiri Swamigal.

LEGENDS
Pundalik was the son of Janudeva and Satyavati. After his marriage, as advised by his wife, he started ill-treat his parents. To escape from ill-treatment, Janudeva and Satyavati decided to go on pilgrimage to Kashi. On hearing this Pundalik wife also wanted to go Kashi with the same group. While Paundalik and his wife are travelling on horse, his Father and mother by walk.

On the way they reached Kukkutswamy ashram. When everybody was in sleep, Pundalik happened see some ladies with dirty clothes. After cleaning ashram and floor they left with clean dress and beauty. On the second day also Pundalik happened to see the same. He was surprised and wanted to know, who they are and what they are doing in the ashram. They replied that they are the holy river Ganga, Yamuna, etc. The also told that they came to the ashram to clean, themselves, after they were absorbing the sin of the Devotees, those took bath. This changed the mind of Pundalik and started serve his father and mother, to get rid of his sin.

Shri Krishna wanted to show the love and affection of Puntalik, toward his Parents to Rukmaye, they came to Puntalik’s place. Since it was raining at that time, Pundalik without giving respect first to God, threw a brick and asked to stand on the brick and went to attend his parents. After attending Pundalik came out and begged to pardon him to make them wait. Krishna told that he is very happy to see his devotion and love towards his parents. Since Krishna was standing on the brick, asked Pundalik to worship as Vithoba, which has got corrupted to Vitthala. Krishna asked to construct a temple for him at this place. Vithoba also known as Panduranga, Pandhari or Vitthala

It is believed that the Namasankirtan ie. Bhajan ie praising God in the form of music, is the only way to reach Maha Vishnu. Srimad Bhagavatham says “Kalau Sankirtaya Kesavam”, while Purandaradasa sang “Kaliyugadalli Harinamava Nenedarey Kula Kodigalu Utharisuvavu”.  Adi Sankara Bhagwadpada taught “Bhaja Govindam, Bhaja Govindam – Govindam Bhaja Moodamathae”, while Sri Bodhendra Saraswathi Swamigal, a descendent in the lineage of Adi Sankara emphasised, “Namasankirtan alone is the salvation in this Kali Yuga”. Azhwars and Nayanmars sang the praise of the Lord throughout their lives in order to attain moksha (liberation).

Many saints born in Maharashtra sang Abhangs (devotional songs  in Marathi language) in praise of Sri Krishna, who is popularly known as Vitthal. The Maha Vishnu is also hailed as Panduranga and his consort is Rakhumayi Devi.




POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Sri Pandurangan and Raghumayee are decorated with different alangaras / costumes every day. On Sundays decorated like Rajasthan King and Queen. Wearing Rajastani Turban, holding sword in hands. Panduranga will be decorated like Giridhari holding Govardhana Hill, As Geethacharya, Parthasarathy, Radhakrishna etc,.

Some of the festivals celebrated in this temple are, Tamil New Year’s day, Gokulashtami with Muthangi Seva, etc, are celebrated in a grand manner.
