Tiruvottiyuraanin Adimai and Balasundara Swamigal Samadhi Temple - பாம்பன் சுவாமிகள் சீடர் ஸ்ரீ ல ஸ்ரீ பாலசுந்தரம் சுவாமிகள் சமாதி கோயில், Appar Nagar, Tiruvottiyur, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to this Sri Tiruvottiyuraanin Adimai and Balasundara Swamigal Samadhi Temple in Appar Nagar near Appar Swamy Temple in Tiruvottiyur was a part of “Hero Stones and Siddhars of Tiruvottiyur Visit”, on 11th September 2022. 

This visit was mainly focused on the Siddhar Jeeva Samadhi Temples of Tiruvottiyur. Most of the Siddhar Jeeva samadhis in Chennai belong to Siddhars who migrated from various parts of Tamil Nadu and other States, like Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, etc,. The Siddhar Samadhis in and around Thiruvottiyur are closely linked with the 11th Century Pattinathar and 19th Century Vallalar alias Ramalinga Adigalar, considering them as their Gurus. Even though the Siddhars attained mukti, away from Tiruvottiyur, they were brought to Tiruvottiyur and laid in Samadhi, considering this place as a holy place.

It is believed that Thiagarajar sannidhi at Vadivudai Amman Temple was renovated by Thiruvottiyuraanin Adimai. It was told that the priest of Vadivudai Amman temple comes to this Jeeva Samadhi and does Pooja.



Athyachirama Kumaradasan Sri-la-Sri Bala Sundara Swamigal
Sri la Sri Bala Sundara Swamigal was the first disciple of Srimath Pamban Swamigal. He met Pamban Swamigal first time at Kachaleeswarar Temple on Aranmanaikaran Theru / Armenian Street and requested to accept him as his disciple. Balasundara Swamigal was a teacher in a school. As per hearsay, Balasundaram Swamigal memorized all the songs composed by Pamban Swamigal. He had written many spiritual books and composed Sodasa Namarchana.

Balasundara Swamigal was the instrumental behind the identification of Pattinathar Jeeva Samadhi Temple along with Pamban Swamigal. During the process, the Shiva Lingam unearthed was installed now at Appar Swamigal Temple.

A Shiva Linga was installed on the jeeva Samadhi 2018- 2019 by Oteri Janakiraman of Raghavi Caters.  

52nd Guru Pooja was celebrated on 28-09-2019, 11th Puratasi, Mahalaya Amavasya day

From the inscription, it is understood that during the 1960s Balasundaram Swamigal took care of the Thiruvanmiyur, Pamban Swamigal Madam, and Tiruvottiyur Appar Swamy Temple.

Arulmigu Apparswamy Thirukovil / அருள்மிகு அப்பர்ஸ்வாமி திருக்கோவில், Appar Nagar, Tiruvottiyur, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

On 11 September 2022, I visited Sri Apparswamy Thirukoil at Appar Nagar in Tiruvottiyur as part of “Hero Stones and Siddhars of Tiruvottiyur.” The visit was mainly focused on the Siddhar Jeeva Samadhis of Tiruvottiyur, and on the way, I had the darshan of Sri Appar Swamy of this temple.

Some of the salient features of this temple are…
The temple faces east and has an entrance ( half is only visible due to encroachment ). A stucco image of Lord Shiva and Parvati as Uma Maheswara is on the top of the entrance. Vinayagar and Sri Valli Devasena Murugan are at the entrance of Sanctum Sanctorum. Moolavar in the sanctum Sanctorum is a little taller. Kostas are empty without images.

Some loose sculptures and Appar ( facing Moolavar ) are in the ardha mandapam. Ambal is in a separate Sannidhi facing South in the ardha mandapam.

Balipeedam, Rishabam, Saptakannis and Nagathamman are in the maha mandapam.
  

ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of sanctum Sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam and Maha mandapam. The temple was constructed completely with bricks. The ardha mandapam is supported by Vrutha pillars.

The sanctum sanctorum is on a pada bandha adhistanam with three patta kumudam ( now up to pattika level the ground level was raised ). Brahma kantha pilasters with kalasam, kudam, mandi, palakai, and pothyal are shown on the bhitti. The prastaram consists of valapi, kapotam, and bhoomi desam. A Two tier dravida vimana is on the sanctum sanctorum. Stucco images of Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, and Brahma are on the first level of Vimanam sala kostas. No other stucco images are found on the vimana.



HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
It is believed that the Appar Swamigal original temple has existed in the same place for the past 1000 years and the present structure dates from the 19th to the 20th Century.

Balasundara Swamigal was, instrumental behind the identification of Pattinathar Jeeva Samadhi Temple along with Pamban Swamigal. During the process, a Shiva Lingam was unearthed from this area. It has been installed at Appar Swamigal Temple.

As per the display board, it was planned to do the thirupani of this temple by HR & CE Department.

The temple is squeezed between the encroached houses. The entrance of the temple only 50 is visible and we cannot do circumambulation of the temple. On the north side the space left will be hardly 3 feet and 2 persons cannot cross at a time.

LEGENDS
It is believed that Thirunavukkarasu Swamigal alias Appar Swamigal visited many  Shiva Temples and came to Tiruvottiyur. Lord Shiva gave darshan to Appar at this place. Appar Swamigal installed a Shiva Lingam and worshiped, it in the same place where Lord Shiva gave darshan. Later a temple was constructed, keeping the Shiva Lingam in the Sanctum Sanctorum.

It was told that when Pamban Swamigal came to Tiruvottiyur, stayed in this temple for some days and practiced meditation.

Apart from regular poojas special poojas are conducted on Pradosham, Maha Shivaratri, and some important days sponsored by the devotees.

The temple will be kept open between 07.00 hrs to 11.00 hrs and 17.00 hrs to 20.00 hrs.

Nadhamuni Swamy Jeeva Samadhi Temple, நாதமுனி சாமி ஜீவ சமாதி அதிர்ஷ்டானம், Mavena Nagar, Tiruvottiyur, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

Some of the Salient features of this Jeeva Samadhi are…
This Jeeva Samadhi is just opposite Pattinathar Temple on the west side of Ennore Express road alongside a workshop called Brilliant Engineering Co., No 21A Pattinathar Koil Street.

The memorial stone slab is erected under a 4 pillar mandapam. The Memorial stone slab has the bas-relief of Ekapada Thrimurthy ( The concept of the iconography is after the pralaya, all, both living and nonliving things,  in the universe will merge with Shri Shiva ). A Conch and Chakra are shown on both sides of Eka padam. Nadhamuni Swamigal’s bas relief is shown below the Ekapada murti in Anjali hastam, sitting posture. 


HISTORY
It is believed that during the construction of Madras Guindy Engineering College, he worked as a mestri, with a Civil Engineering Contractor.  

Inscriptions of his Samadhi day were inscribed on both sides of the Nadhamuni Swamigal bas relief. Nadhamuni Swamigal attained Jeeva Samadhi on 28th July 1892, Nandhana year Aadi month

The inscription reads as…

  2. ஆர்காடு நாதமு
  3. னி முதலியார் சமா
  4. தி மேஸ்த்திரி
  5. (கிண்டி ..?)  இஞ்…னீரிங் காலேஜ்

Similarly, there is an inscription tablet, fixed on the top of the mandapam. The inscription records his samadhi date, year, nakshatra, Laknam, etc,  and his Guru as  …… paradesi. He worked as a mestri with a Civil Engineering Contract.  ……. Nakshatra, Makara Lagnam is also mentioned.


POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Daily poojas are conducted by the devotees. Apart from this, the Guru pooja is conducted in Aadi month Mrigashira Nakshatra day.

His 127th guru pooja was conducted on 28th  July 2019, Aadi Month Mrigashira Nakshatra day.

This Jeeva Samadhi is just opposite to Pattinathar Temple on the west side of Ennore Express road in side a workshop called Brilliant Engineering Co., No 21A Pattinathar Koil Street.
The Jeeva Samadhi temple is about 2 KM from Sri Thyagaraja Temple and 15 KM from Chennai Central.

The visit to this Sri Sadai Swamy and Nayina Swamigal Jeeva Samadhi Temple in Appar Nagar near Appar Swamy Temple in Tiruvottiyur Kuppam, Tiru Chinna Kuppam, Tiruvottiyur was a part of “Hero Stones and Siddhars of Tiruvottiyur Visit”, on 11th September 2022. 

This visit was mainly focused on the Siddhar Jeeva Samadhi Temples of Tiruvottiyur. Most of the Siddhar Jeeva samadhis in Chennai belong to Siddhars who migrated from various parts of Tamil Nadu and other States, like Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, etc,. Siddhar: Sri Sadai Swamigal and Sri Nayina Swamigal

Mahan Sri Sadai Swamigal.
Sri Sadai Swamigal attained jeeva samadhi on 14th January 1886. Guru pooja will be done on Tamil month Thai, Bharani Nakshatra day.

Sri Nayina Swamigal attained Jeeva Samadhi on 06th January 1897, Guru pooja will be conducted on Tamil month Margazhi Avita Nakshatra day.



In addition to this, the samadhis of the following people are there.

Sri C Krishna Swamy Mudaliar attained Samadhi on 05th March 1892. Samadhi pooja will be conducted on  Tamil month Masi, kettai nakshatra day.

Sri C Muniswamy Mudaliar attained Samadhi on 20th February 1922. Samadhi pooja will be conducted on Tamil month Masi, Kettai nakshatra day.

Sri C Solaiappa Mudaliar attained Samadhi on 22nd April 1911 and Samadhi pooja will be conducted on 22nd April.

Mrs Jeevammal ( C Chengalvarayan Mudaliar’s wife ) attained Samadhi in the year 1918. The Samadhi pooja will be conducted on Tamil month Aadi, Karthigai nakshatra day.

Sri C. Tha.  Vadivambal ( C Thathulingam Mudaliar’s Wife and former Chennai Nagaratchi Mayor) attained Samadhi in the year 1943. Samadhi pooja will be conducted on Tamil Month Avani,  Karthigai Nakshatram Saptami tithi.

Sri C Chengalvarayan Mudaliar attained Samadhi ( Brother of Dr Natesanar and Ex MLC, Dy President Madras Legislative Council ) on 09th December 1952. Samadhi pooja will be conducted on Tamil month Karthigai, Pooram nakshatra day.

Sri C S Mani Mudaliar attained Samadhi ( Son of C.Chengalvaraya Mudaliar ) on 30th October 2005. Samadhi pooja will be conducted on Tamil month Aippasi, Hastham Nakshatram, and Thiriyothasi Thithi.



HISTORY
This is a C Krishnaswamy Mudaliar’s family Sathukkam / Square. On 31st, Tamil Aani month, Vikruthi year ( 15th July 2010 ), Magha nakshatra, Chaturthi tithi, this building was renovated and declared open after conducting homams. This Samadhi building is a private property.  

LEGENDS
It was said that Pamban Swamigal came to Nayina Swamigal to get blessings. But Nayina Swamigal covered his face ( mukkadu ) with Cloth. Pamban Swamigal requested Nayina Swamigal’s darshan, and finally, Nayina Swamigal gave darshan.

Apart from regular poojas and Abhishekams, special poojas are conducted on Pournami, Amavasya, Pradosham, and Guru Pooja day on the Thai month Uthradam Nakshatra day.
