Arulmigu Kadambavana Nathar Temple / ஸ்ரீ கடம்பவன நாதர் திருக்கோயில், பாப்பாக்கோவில் /Pappakoil, Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu.

The Visit to this Sri Kadambavana Nathar Temple at Pappakoil was a part of the “Visit to Shiva, Murugan, Divya Desams, Buddha, and Jain Temples around Nagapattinam” on 4th September 2024. This is one of the Shiva Temples in and around Nagapattinam, where Devotees visit on Maha Shivaratri day in the form of Shivala ottam… சிவாலய ஓட்டம்.

Some of the salient features of this temple are…..
The temple faces east with a Rajagopuram base. The temple tank, called Panchakurosha tirtha, is in front of the entrance. Stucco images of Shiva with Parvati, Vinayagar, and Murugan are on the top of the Rajagopuram base. Balipeedam and Rishabam are in front of the Rajagopuram base. Paintings of Dwarabalakas, Vinayagar, and Murugan sannidhis are on both sides of the ardha mandapam. Moolavar is of Swayambhu on a round Avudayar. In koshtam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma and Durgai.

In praharam Shiva Lingas, Ambal, Vinayagar Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Gajalakshmi, Chandikeswarar, Navagrahas, Saniswaran, Chandran and Suriyan.

Ambal is in a separate sannidhi facing South in the mukha mandapam. Ambal is in standing posture with abhaya varada hastam.

Kadambavana Siddhar jeeva Samadhi is on the back side of the Temple in a small shrine.



ARCHITECTURE
The temple is on an adhistanam. Brahma kantha pilasters with kalasam, kudam, palakai and Vettu pothyal. The prastaram consists of valapi with nasi kudus. An eka tala, Dravida Cimanam is on the sanctum sanctorum. Stucco images of Shiva, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, and Brahma are in the greeva koshtam. 
 



HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The temple belongs to the 13th to 14th Century, Chozha Period, and received contributions from Nayakas. The temple was completely renovated by Nattukottai Nagarathars, during recent years. 

Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 14th November 2013.


LEGENDS
It is believed that Chozhas built this temple amid the Kadambavana forest. Kadambavana Siddhar worshipped Shiva at this temple, which is why Shiva is called Kadambanana Nathar.

It is believed that incurable diseases can be cured by bathing in the temple and worshiping Shiva.

Muruga came to this temple amid the Kambavana forest and worshipped Shiva to get rid of the sin caused due to killing the asura Soorapadman. The five Kadambavan Shiva Temples are, Aadhi Kadambanur, Agarakadambanur, Ilangakadambanur, and Perungadambanur.

As per the legend, at the End of each yuga, due to pralaya all the living things will be destroyed, submerged in water. Ma Parvati worships Shiva during that night doing 4 kala poojas to spring back the living things and mankind. That Night is called Maha Shivaratri. Devotees visit this temple on that day in the form of Shivalaya Ottam.

Apart from regular oru kala poojas, special poojas are conducted on Pradosham, Maha Shivaratri, etc,.
