Moolavar: Shri Trimbakeshwar
Some
of the important features of this temple are….
The
temple faces east at the foothill of Brahmagiri Hills, without
Rajagopuram with a huge Q complex made of shed. Rishabam is in a separate mandapam. The
sanctum sanctorum consists of a Sanctum, an ardha mandapam, and a maha mandapam. Dwarf reliefs
playing instruments can be seen at the entrance of sanctum pilasters.
ARCHITECTURE
The
mandapam looks awesome viewed from the bottom. The
most attractive part of this temple is the presence of 3 Lingas each
representing Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. All three reside in a hallow space
within the avudayar. It was believed that water was oozing from
Shiva. The
reliefs of simham and elephants at the adhistanam can be seen on the
Vimanam.
HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The
temple was built by Shri Nanasaheb Peshwa in 1755 -1786 CE. (But the
tablet installed at the VIP entrance gate says that the temple was renovated
during the year 1740-1761 CE by Peshwa Balaji Bajirao). Again the temple was
renovated during the year 1789 CE.
It
is built with black stone and Shiva Lingam is said to be emerged naturally. The
temple’s compound wall is a 20-25 feet high stone wall.
