Sri Ranganatha Swamy, Adhi Thiruvarangam, Thiruvannamalai / Tiruvannamalai District, Tamil Nadu.

This temple Sri Ranganatha Swamy’s visit was a part of Thiruvannamalai Heritage walk organized by the Tiruvannamalai District Historical Research Center on 30th December 2018. This temple is at Adhi Thiruvarangam, near Sankarapuram on the south bank of river Then Pennai..

Some of the salient features of this temple are….
The temple is facing east with an entrance arch with stucco image of Sri Ranganathar in Sayana kolam. A 4 pillar mandapa is before the  3 tier Rajagopuram. There is a paddy/ grains storage go-down built with bricks on the right side corner of the premises, immediately after the entrance arch. The Dravidian style architecture sanctum sanctorum with 2 prakaras spreads in 2 acre( 8100 sq m) land. The premises walls are constructed with high raised stone. Thayar is also facing east on the right side of moolavar sannadhi. Balipeedam, Dwajasthambam are in the maha mandapam.

ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala, artha mandapam and maha mandapam. Entrance to the main sanctum is from the south. The sanctum is of rectangular shape to accommodate  Sri Ranganathar is of 15 feet in length on the 5 hooded Adhi sheshan in sayana kolam. Sridevi and Bhoodevi are at his feet. Garudalwar is also at moolavar’s feet in worshiping posture. Alwars and Chotta Ranganathar are in ardha mandapa.  In the prakaram sannadhi for Kothanda Ramar, Hanuman, Varadharaja Perumal, Viswak Senar, Friday oonjal, Andal and Krishna. A Stone Ramar statue is on the south west corner of the prakaram, various sounds are noticed by tapping different parts of the statue.

HISTORY
Believed to be built in medieval Chozha period 8 to 9th Century and latter contributions from Vijayanagara dynasty. 

LEGEND
As per the legend the demon Somukan took away the 4 vedas from The Devas. As per their request Vishnu got back the same. In another legend a King Surakeerthi was blessed with a child after praying Sri Ranganathar. Chandran and Brahma worshiped Lord Ranganathar of this temple. 

POOJAS & CELEBRATIONS    
Important functions are held on  Vaikunta Ekadasi, Rama navami, Pournami, Purattasi Saturday, Krishna Jayanthi, Karthigai deepam, etc,. Brahmotsavam will also be Celebrated. Daily 6 times poojas are conducted. The 10 days Chariot procession festival will be conducted during Chithirai month.
