Sri Muktheeshwarar Temple / Sri Madhimuktheswarar Temple /ஸ்ரீ முக்தீஸ்வரர் கோவில் / மந்தாரவனேஸ்வரர் / திலதைப்பதி / Sethalapathy / Thilathaipathi / Thilatharpanapuri, Thiruvarur District, Tamil Nadu.

This is the 175^th Thevara paadal petra Shiva Sthalam on south side of river Kaveri and  58^th sthalam of Chozha Nadu. Now this place is called as  Sithalapathi / Sethalapathy on the banks of river Arasalaru. This place was called as Madhimutham during ancient times.

In Periyapuranam Sekkizhar records that, Thirugnanasambandar came to this temple after worshiping Lord Shiva of Penu Perundurai.

Some of the salient features of this temple are...

The temple is facing is facing east with a Rajagopuram. Rajagopuram was constructed during recent years with one side normal Stucco images and other ( inner ) side only flat surface with paintings. Balipeedam and Rishabam are in front of the sanctum. Moolavar is of Swayambhu. In koshtam, Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma and Ashtabhuja Durgai.

In prakaram sannadhi for Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Gaja Lakshmi, Navagrahas, Chandran, Suriyan, Bhairavar, Nalvar, Nagar, Shiva Linga worshiped by Rama, Kasi Viswanathar and Natarajar with Sivagami Manthara Vaneswarar is under the sthala vruksham. Sri Ram and Lakshman gave thilatharbanam in this temple. Sri Ram and Lakshman with Lingams are also in the prakaram. Maha Vishnu is found in three places in different postures in this temple.

The sanctum sanctorum consists of sanctum, antarala and artha mandapam. There is a separate temple for Aadi Vinayagar. This Vinayagar is with human face ( மனித உருவில் ), instead of elephant head face.

Adhi Vinayagar Temple

The 15^th Century saint Arunagirinathar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Muruga of this temple.

        அறையிற் பெரிதா                          மலமாயை

                அலையப் படுமா                     றினியாமோ

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS

Since Thirugnanasambandar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple, the original temple might have been existed before 7^th century and latter reconstructed as a stone temple during Vijayanagara period and renovated by Nattukottai Nagarathars.

Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted 25^th August 1999 and 08^th July 2012.

LEGENDS

Since river Arasalaru is flowing from north to south, this place is called as “Utharavahini” and the temple is considered as auspicious similar to Kasi.

Brahma was cursed by Lord Shiva for Brahma fell in love with Urvasi the dancer of Indraloka. To get rid of the curse Brahma came to this place and did a penance and worshiped Lord Shiva. Satisfied with the worship Lord Shiva, gave darshan and pardoned Brahma. He was also relieved from the curse.

In another legend Lord Rama and his brother came to know about their father Dasaratha’s demise. They performed “Thila Tharpanam” at this temple. Thilam – is called as the name of gingili oil. Tharpanam means to do the last rites for the departed soul of ancestors. Rama also done the tharpanam, ie the last rites of his loving bird Jatayu, which was killed by Ravana, when he was abducting Sita. Hence this place is called as Thilatharpanapuri, which has corrupted to the present name of Sethalapathy and Lord Shiva is called as Muktheeswarar.

It is believed that Goddess Parvati, Maha Lakshmi, Brahma, Suriyan, Chandran, King Narchothi, an elephant and a Lion worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple.

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS

Apart from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on Maha Shivaratri in the month Masi ( Feb – March ), Vinayagar Chathurthi in the month Aavani ( Aug – Sept ), Thiru Karthigai in the month Karthigai ( Nov – Dec ), every month pradosham and new moon days.

On the bus route Mayiladuthurai to Thiruvarur, get down at Koothanur / Kuttanur ( SARASWATHI TEMPLE ), from there the temple is 3 KM. Autos are available from Kuttanur / Koothanur and Poonthottam.

The temple is 3 KM from Poonthottam ( Railway Station ), 6.4 KM from Peralam, 22 KM from Mayiladuthurai, 23 KM from Thiruvarur, 28 KM from Karaikal, 36 KM from Kumbakonam and 280 KM from Chennai.

Nearest Railway Station is Punthottam / Poonthottam and Junction is Mayiladuthurai.
