Thanjai Mamani Koil / Sri Neelamega Perumal Temple / நீலமேகப் பெருமாள் கோவில், Vennatrakarai, one of the 108 Divya desam,Thanjavur, Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu.

This is one of the 108 Divya Desam Vishnu Temples on the banks of River Vennaru. There are three temples forms one Divya Desa  Temple, which are 200 meters to 300 meters apart from each other called as Thanjai Mamani Koil. The other two are Sri Narasimha Perumal Temple, Yazhi Nagar and Sri Manikundra Perumal Temple, Manikundram. In ancient days this place was called as Parasara Kshetram, Vambulancholai, Azhagapuri, Garuda Puri, Sameevanam and Thanjai Yazhi Nagar. 

Mangalasasanam was done by Thirumangai Alwar ( 953, 1090, 1576, ) Nammalwar (3139 ) and Bhoothathalwar ( 2251 )

Some of the important features of this temple are….

The temple is facing east with a three tier Rajagopuram. Dwajasthambam, balipeedam and Garudalwar are immediately after the Rajagopuram. Immediately after the Rajagopuram sannadhi for Lakshmi Hayagriva on the left and Alwars, Desikan and Ramanujar  are on the right side mandapam. 

Moolavar Sri Neelamega Perumal is in sitting posture with SriDevi and Bhudevi. Moolavar is holding sankha and chakra in the upper hands and the right hand is in abhaya hastam and left hand is in ahvana hastam. Parasara Maharishi is also in the sanctum sanctorum. The Utsavars Maha Vishnu is with Sridevi, Bhudevi and Kothai Machiyar.

  

Thayar Sengamala Valli is facing east in a separate temple like sannadhi (with sanctum, antarala and artha mandapam ). In the artha mandapam Thiruvikrama Perumal, Sri Varaha Perumal, Lakshmi Narasimhar, Andal and Vishwaksena. Urchavar is Narayanar with Baton in his hand. 

Utsava Murtis are at Sri Narasimha Perumal temple sanctum sanctorum. Moved for safety reasons. 

ARCHITECTURE

The sanctum sanctorum consists of Sanctum Sanctorum, Antarala and ardha mandapam. A Mukha mandapam was built in the recent years. The sanctum was built on a upanam and Adhistanam, Padman, Three pattai Kumudam. The Koshtams are found empty. In the prastaram Kapotham without nasi. The sikaram is of vesara style. The Vimana over the Sanctum is called as Soundarya Vimanam.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS

The temple is being built before 7^th Century and reconstructed during Vijayanagara period. A 20^th century inscription mandapam and flooring was done

The inscription dated 01^st November, extends its thanks to Divya Desa Kaingarya Trust for the participation in the renovation and samprokshanam.

Another inscription thirupani was started on 27^th November 1960 by M Bhakthavatchalam.

Maha samprokshanam was conducted on 01^st November 2009.

The temple is under the administrative control of Thanjavur Aranmanai Devasthanam, Thanjavur.

LEGENDS

As per the legend  Parasara Maharishi with his disciple lived in the ashram on the banks of river Manimuthar river now called as Vennar. The demons Thanjaka, Thandeka and Tharakasuran gave troubles to the Sage Parasara Maharishi  and his yagam. So Maharishi requested Lord Shiva to protect them from demons. Lord Shiva in turn sent Kali ( another avathar of Sri Parvati ). Tharakasuran was Killed by Kali but couldn’t kill Thanjaka and Thandaka. When the sage Parasara approached Vishnu, He took the form of Narasimhar ( with lion’s Face – Yazhi face ) and Killed Thanjaka. As per his request Sri Narasimhar stayed in Yazhi Nagar. On seeing this Thandaka, hide himself in the pathalaloga. Now Vishnu took the form of Varaha ( Boar ) and killed the demon Thandaka. After Killing the demons Lord Vishnu gave darshan in the form of Neelamega Perumal to Sage Parasara Maharishi. Lord Vishnu bless us in three different names in three temples close to each other. In Neelamega Perumal Temple Lakshmi is sitting on the left lap of Perumal but in Yazhi Nagar Goddess Lakshmi is sitting on the right side since Lord Vishnu looks ferocious.

Vishnu gave darshan to Parasara Maharishi.

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS

Apart from Regular poojas, Narasimha Jayanthi and annual 10 days Brahmotsavam is celebrated in a grand manner.

Some of the important features of this temple are….

The temple is facing east with an entrance arch. Dwajasthambam, balipeedam and Garudalwar are immediately after the entrance arch.

Moolavar Sri Manikundra Perumal is in sitting posture with SriDevi and BhooDevi. Moolavar is holding Sankha and Chakra in the uppeer hands and lower hands are in abhaya & varada hastam. Thayar Ambujavalli is facing east in a separate sannidhi with a small vimana. The Sannadhi is abutting the south wall of the ardha mandapa. Reliefs of Garudalwar and  Anjaneyar are at the entrance of the sanctum artha mandapam. The Paramapatha Vayil is on the north side with steps. 

Utsava murti along with Sridevi and Bhudevi are kept at Narasimha Perumal Temple for safety reasons. 

ARCHITECTURE: 

The temple was built like a madakoil, little above the ground level.  It was told that this temple was built on a small hill ( Kundru). Hence called as Mani kundra Koil. 

The temple consists of Sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam and maha mandapam. The sanctum was built with upanam and Adhistanam. This adhistanam is of pada bandha adhistanam with jagathy, threepatta kumudam and pattika. The Bhitti starts with Vedika. The Kostams are found empty. In the prastaram Kapotham with nasi koodu. Stucco  images of Maha Vishnu's various avatars are on the first level. The sikaram is of Vesara style. The Vimana over the Sanctum is called as manikoodam.

HISTORY  

The original temple belongs to 7th Century and reconstructed during 16th to 17th Century. 

The temple is under the administrative control of Thanjavur Palace devasthanam. Fragment 16^th to 17^th Century Tamil inscriptions are found in the walls of the temple.   

An 1892 CE Inscription tablet installed on the steps  records the paving of praharam floor, balipeedam, Garudan Sannidhi, Doors, and compound wall. The inscription further mentions the works done like construction of compound wall, paving of praharam floor at Sri Kalyana Venkatesa Perumal temple ( where is this temple is not known... ? ).

Maha Samprokshanam was conducted on 16^th March 2000, 21^st March 2022.
