The
Visit to this Pakkam Ellai Amman Temple was a part of “Jainism Sculpture, Shiva
Temples and an Amman Temple Visit” at Puliyur, Pakkam and Kilambakkam of
Tiruvallur / Thiruvallur District, on 13th February 2022. After Kilambakkam Shiva Temple’s visit, on the
way home, happened to see this Temple on the roadside with an entrance arch that looks like Saptamatrikas temple.

Deity : Sri Ellai Amman
Some
of the salient features of this temple are...
The
temple faces east with an entrance arch on the south side. The main deity, Amman’s
various avatars are at the entrance arch, and Mukha mandapam and Gopuram are made
of stucco. Stucco Dwarapalakis are at the entrance of the sanctum sanctorum. A
Small Amman’s head is at the feet of the main stucco deity. Various forms of Ellai
Amman / Amman are in the koshtam. A mandapam with stucco lion pillars is in
front of Durgai. In the prakaram, Stucco Vinayagar and Nagars are under a
peepal tree. A big banyan tree is on the premises.
ARCHITECTURE
The
Temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam and a mukha
mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is on a padabandha adhistanam. A two-tier
stucco Vimanam is on the sanctum sanctorum. Stucco images of Amman’s various forms
are on the Vimanam.
HISTORY AND
INSCRIPTIONS
It
was told that the original temple is 300 to 400 years old. The Entrance arch
was built and Kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 09th August 2000.
Ashtabandhana maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 16th June 2016.
POOJAS AND
CELEBRATIONS
Apart
from regular Poojas special poojas are conducted on Pournami days, Chitra
Pournami and Annual festival will be conducted on the 5th Friday of Aadi
month. During the Annual festival, Amman will be taken in procession up to Pakkam Mariamman
temple and will return back after 3 days.
TEMPLE TIMINGS
The
temple will be kept open between 07.00 hrs to 11.00 hrs and 17.00 hrs to
19.00 hrs.

This Ellai Amman temple at Pakkam, in Thiruvallur
District, is about 1 KM from Puliyur
Village, 16 KM from Thiruvallur, 6 Thiruninravur, 19 KM from Poonamallee, 33 KM
from Koyambedu and 37 KM from Chennai Central.
The nearest big Railway station is Thiruvallur.
