Dharmaraja’s Rock Cut Throne / Lions Throne, An UNESCO Heritage site, Mamallapuram, Chengalpattu District, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to this Lions thorne or Dharmaraja’s Throne at  Mamallapuram,  one of the UNESCO Heritage sites of Tamil Nadu, was a Part of “Mamallapuram Heritage Visit” under the title – “Known Mamallapuram, Unknown places - தெரிந்த மாமல்லபுரம், தெரியாத இடங்கள்” organised by SASTRA & Chithiram Pesuthada Groups on 19^th March 2023.

In addition to the monolithic and cave Temple, There are number of other similar works of architecture of Mamallapuram, not falling any definite/ specific category one among them is Dharmaraja’s Rock Cut Throne. This monolithic edifice consists of large rectangular seat with beautifully carved couchant lion at one end. This Dharmaraja’s Rock Cut throne is popularly known as Lion’s Throne.

தர்மராஜா சிம்மாசனம் ஒற்றைக்கல்லில் செதுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. கட்டுமானக்கோயில்கள் மற்றும், குடைவரைகளைத் தவிர இதுபோன்ற அமைப்புகளும் பல்லவர் காலத்தில் மாமல்லபுரத்தில் செதுக்கப்பட்டு உள்ளன.  நீள்சதுரமான மேடைமீது ஒரு சிங்கம் கம்பீரமாக அமர்ந்து இருப்பது போல அழகாக செதுக்கப்பட்டு உள்ளது. இதை சிங்க சிம்மாசனம் என்றும் அழைக்கின்றனர்.
