This
Sri Arkeeswarar Shiva Temple at Pammal became famous after the Panchaloka
idols were unearthed from this place. Hope the Grama Devathai temple existed in the
same place even before the construction of this Shiva Temple, since ancient times.

Some
of the salient features of this temple are….
The
temple faces east with an entrance arch. Anjaneyar Sannidhi is on the left
side immediately after the entrance. Balipeedam and Rishabam are under a Metacolour sheet mandapam. Vinayagar and Murugan are at the entrance of sanctum
sanctorum. Moolavar is a little big on a square avudayar. In koshtam Vinayagar,
Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma and Durgai. In Praharam Vinayagar, Sri
Valli Devasena Subramaniyar, Kasi Viswanathar & Visalakshi, Chandikeswarar,
Amirthambigai Ambal, Kala Bairavar, Saneeswarar, Navagrahas and Arulmigu Sakthi
Sooriamman, a grama devathai temple.
Ambal
Sri Amithambigai is in a separate temple facing south. Ambal is in standing
posture with abhaya varada hastam.
ARCHITECTURE
The
temple consists of Sanctum sanctorum, ardha mandapam and mukha mandapam. The
adhistanam is not visible fully. A 3 tier nagara-style Vimanam is on the
sanctum sanctorum. Stucco images of Shiva, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, and
Brahma are on the tala and Greeva kostams.
HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
As per the temple authorities, the temple
belongs to the 6th to 7th Century ie 1300 years old. While
digging the earth for the construction of the mandapam, some idols like Vinayagar,
Somaskandar, (Shiva and Ambal), Manickavasagar, Thirunavukkarasu Swamigal,
Thirugnanasambandar, Chandikeswarar, Sivakami Amman, Amman 2 nos were
unearthed. Based on the report of the Archaeological Department, it was presumed
that the temple also belongs to the 6th to 7th Century. But
there is no inscriptional evidence to prove the same.
Maha
Kumbabhishekam was conducted on 27th June 2004.
LEGENDS
It
is believed that Surya worshiped Shiva at this temple. Since Ark is another
name for Suryan, ( Ark + Eswaran ) Shiva is called Arkeeswarar. Hence this
place is a Suryan Parihara Sthalam.
Devotees
pray to Shiva of this temple to get relief from pithru dosha, Headaches, Right
eye ailment, piththa body, and not mentally stable.
POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart
from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on pradosam, maha Shivaratri
days, Pournami, Thaipoosam, Panguni Uthiram, New Year days, Chithra Pournami,
Sani Peyarchi and all important Hindu
festival days.
TEMPLE TIMINGS
The
temple will be kept open between 07.30 hrs to 11.00 hrs and 16.30 hrs to
20.30 hrs.

HOW TO REACH
The
temple is on the south side of Sooriamman Koil Pond.
The
temple is 2.4 KM from Pallavaram Gate Bus stop, 8.3 KM from Tambaram, 20 KM
from Koyambedu bus stand, and 24 KM from Chennai Central station.
