Maha Kumbh Mela 2025, Prayagraj (Allahabad)/கும்பமேளா 2025, பிரயாக்ராஜ், Uttar Pradesh, India.

The participation in Kumbh Mela 2005, snan at Prayagraj, was a part of the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 Tour, between 05th February to 08th February 2025, organized by Mantra Yatra (website). Thanks to Mr. Balaji Davey and his team of Mantra Yatra for the excellent arrangement and personnel care. After hearing the panic news in the media, and the meticulous arrangements by the Mantra Yatra we focussed only on the Kumbh Mela snan, and the Kashi Shri Viswanath's darshan became the second priority, which was planned earlier. We 39 members, took our Maha Kumbh Mela Snan at Triveni Sangam on 6th Feb 2025, without any untoward incident or problem. Originally it was planned for the darshan of Shri Kashi Vishwanath, Varanasi, and Ganga Aarathi. It was a little disappointing not to have the darshan of Shri Kashi Vishwanath, due to the heavy rush but mentally satisfied ourselves with the darshan Ganga Aarathi. Hope we will make another trip after the Kumbh Mela. Went to the Buddhist Site at Sarnath, one of the UNESCO monuments ( included in the Sites on the Tentative List 1998) before departing for Chennai.

The Kumbh Mela is celebrated four times in a 12-year span-once every three years, and it is held in four places in rotation, which are Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik. As Jupiter takes about 12 years to orbit around the Sun, the Kumbh Mela is celebrated four times over 12 years. This Maha Kumbh at Prayagraj Triveni Sangam is the most special of all the four places, where the confluence of rivers Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati, occurs once in 144 years. The Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj is calculated when Jupiter is placed in Taurus and the Sun and Moon are in Capricorn (Makar Rashi, during Makar Sankranti).

The 44 days Maha Kumbh Mela 2025, at Prayagraj began on January 14, 2025 (Makar Sankranti) and will be concluded on February 26, 2025 (Maha Shivratri).

LEGENDS
There are a lot of legends and sub-legends connected to the Kumbh Mela. According to Hindu mythology, the celestial deities and demons churned the milk ocean to get the Amrit, using Mandhara Hill as mattu on Koorma, one of the Maha Vishnu’s avatars, and Vasuki as a rope. Before churning they arrived at a consensus to work together to churn the Ksheera Sagara, the primeval ocean of milk, to obtain Amrit, the nectar of immortality. This churning, known as the Samudra Manthan, was an elaborate and monumental task requiring the combined efforts of both Celestial deities and demons.

It was agreed that the Amrit would be shared equally among all participants. However, as soon as the Kumbh (pitcher) full of Amrit appeared, the demons, driven by their insatiable greed, seized it and fled. Determined to secure immortality for themselves and humanity, the Gods pursued the demons, leading to a fierce battle in the skies.

The celestial battle between the Gods and demons lasted for twelve consecutive days and nights, which, in human terms, equated to twelve years. During this epic confrontation, a few drops of the precious Amrit fell on the Earth, blessing four distinct places: Nashik, Ujjain, Haridwar, and Prayagraj. Hence, Kumbh Mela is held in the above holy places once every twelve years.

Prayagraj is considered the most significant of all the Kumbh Mela sites due to the confluence of three sacred rivers: the Ganges, the Yamuna, and the mystical Saraswati, called “Triveni Sangam”. The three rivers are considered sacred: the Ganges for knowledge, the Yamuna for devotion, and the Saraswati for purity. This confluence is considered the point of the highest spiritual energy, and the waters are believed to be most potent for spiritual purification.
