Pottiamman Temple / பொட்டியம்மன் கோவில், Saptamatrikas and Inscription Stones, Sengulam, Thangamalpuram, Theni District, Tamil Nadu.

This visit to the Pottiamman temple with Saptamatrikas, and remains of a Shiva Temple at Sengunam, Thangamalpurram, in Theni District, was a part of Varusanadu Payanam, a Heritage walk to the temples and Heritage Sites, organised by Aatrupadai, on 20^th – 21^st September 2025. Thanks to திருச்சி பார்த்தி, Prabaharan, and Bala Bharathi. 

This is a unique temple with a big balipeedam and a sanctum sanctorum for a female deity called Pottiamman, at Sengulam village in Theni District.

On the right side of the temple, a part of Saptamatrikas (Gaumari, Varahi, and Vaishnavi), Saptakannis, a Bairavar without a head, Lingothbavar with Brahma, and Maha Vishnu on both sides, and a Sati stone are installed on a platform.

In addition to the above three fragment inscriptions, stones are also found on the premises.

The first incomplete inscription records the name of the King as Sri Komarabarmar alias Thiribuvana Chakravarthigal Emmandalamum Kondaruliya Sri Kulaskara Devarkku… and the deity’s name as Sivali(Ka)mudaiya Nayanar. The inscription reads as…

The third fragment incomplete inscription, records an endowment of Thirupadi MaRRu by one of the Aza Nattu rulers under the Pandyas, Siru Nadalwan’s wife DevanaazhviLan. For the same land was gifted to this temple. The inscription reads as…

From the Sculptures, inscription stones, and the balipeedam, it is confirmed that there was a 13th-century Pandya-period Shiva temple existed in this place.
