St. Thomas Mount is a hillock of historical importance located near Guindy,
Chennai. Sir Thomas Holland in 1893 coined the name harnockite for the
country rock of the St. Thomas Mount area, named after Job Charnock, the founder of
Kolkata city, whose tomb was made of the same rock. This rock was first termed hypersthene granite by Sir William King, the then Chief of the Geological
Survey of India, in 1892. To preserve the glory of this globally recognized
rock that was originally identified and named in India, the National Geological
Monument of Charnockite was declared in 1975.
