Sri Yoga Narasimha Swamy Temple / ஸ்ரீ யோகநரசிம்மர் கோயில், வேளச்சேரி / Velachery, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

The temple is in Velachery, previously called as Vedhasreni. The story is very much associated to Sri Dhandeeswarar Shiva temple Temple ( 4 Vedas relieved from dosham after worshiping Lord Shiva ).

Some of the important features are..

The temple is facing west with a 3 tier Rajagopuram and balipeedam and Dwajasthambam are immediately after the Rajagopuram. In the maha mandapam, sannadhi for alwars. Dwarapalakas are at the entrance of the maha mandapam and Artha mandapam. In the artha mandapam, Urchavars Bhaktavatsala Perumal with Bhoodevi and Sridevi, and Vedanarayana Swamy is with prayoga chakra.  In Sanctum moolavar is Sri Narasimha Swamy in sitting yoga posture.

In koshtam moorthams of Perumals avataras.and below reliefs of Narasimhar’s various postures like Jwala, Sathra vada, Paravana, etc.. Prakalath sannadhi is on the opposite of moolavar instead of Garudalwar.

Thayar Amirtha Balavalli is in a separate sannidhi on the right side facing east and Chakkarathalwar and Kothandaramar  with Anjaneyar sannadhi are on the left side near the Rajagopuram also facing east. Bodhi tree with Nagars are on the right side of the dwajasthambam. 

ARCHITECTURE

The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala, artha mandapam and maha mandapam. The original temple was built with simple pada banda adhishtanam. The Adhistanam is on a raised Upanam. The new temple was built with granite from adhistanam to prastaram. The super structure 2 talas above prastaram was built with brick. The Sanctum walls has the bas-reliefs of Maha Vishnu's various avatars. A exquisitely carved jala is also on the wall. 

  

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS 

The temple is believed to be of  1300 years old and constructed during the same period of Sri Dhandeeswarar and Sri Selliamman. The temple has the contributions of Rajaraja Chozha, Dhandi Varma the Pallava King in terms of land  and money for performing regular Poojas and functions. 

 

11 ஆம் நூற்றாண்டு மன்னரின் பெயர் இல்லாத யோக நரசிம்மர் கோயில் தெற்கு குமுதத்தில் உள்ள கல்வெட்டு, வெளிச்சேரியைச் சார்ந்த பத்தங்கி தேவநாத பட்டன் என்பானின் மனைவி நங்கைச் சானி என்பவள் சிங்கப்பெருமாள் என்னும் இக்கோயிலைக் கட்டியுள்ளாள். இக்கோயிலைக் கட்டிய தச்சருக்கு மூலதனமாக இவள் வழங்கிய தோட்ட நிலத்தினை ஆராவமுது பட்டன் என்பவனிடம் விற்று இருபது பழங்காசுகள் பெற்றுத் தச்சுப் பணிக்காக வழங்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

The 11^th Century inscription ( 777/2017 ), records that the Singapperumāļ temple was constructed by Nangaiśāni, wife of Pattanigi Devanatha Bhattan of Velichchēri. She gifted 20 palaikāśu to sthapathi for remuneration to this temple construction.

முதலாம் இராசராசனின் 24வது ஆட்சி ஆண்டு வேதநாராயணப் பெருமாள் கோயில்  மேல் விதானத்தில் உள்ள கல்வெட்டு, பல்வேறு ஊர்களிலுள்ள நிலத்தின் மீதான வருவாய் மற்றும் வரிகளை இக்கோயிலுக்கு சர்வமானியமாக இராசராசன் வழங்கிய ஆணையைக் குறிப்பிடுகின்றது,

Chola King Rājarāja-I’s 24^th reign year ( 1009 CE ) inscription ( 784/2017 ),  on a slab built on the ceiling of the Vedanāryanap perumal temple, records an order of Rajaraja-I to the village administration that income from the lands and taxes may be utilized for offerings.

வேதநாராயணப் பெருமாள் கோயிலில் மேல் விதானத்தில் உள்ள இரண்டு துண்டு கல்வெட்டுக்கள் கீழ்கண்ட செய்தியைப் பதிவு செய்கின்றன. முதலாவது முதலாம் இராசேந்திரனின் மெய்க்கீர்த்தியின் சில பகுதிகள் காணப்படுகின்றன. ஆவூர் திருமேற்றளி கோயிலில் விளக்கெரிக்க இவ்வூரைச் சார்ந்த நங்கை சானி என்பவள் ஆடு தானமளித்துள்ளாள்.

Chōla King Rājēndra-I’s  period two fragmentary  inscriptions ( 785/2017 ), on the ceiling of the Vedanāryanap perumal temple, records the gift of saava moova sheeps for burning a lamp to the temple of Tirumērrali of Avür by Nangai, a brähmin lady.

The temple was rebuilt recently by the Prahlada Kainkarya trust through public money and Kumbhabhishekam was performed in 2016. The temple was rebuilt completely with granite stone. The original temple’s base – Kumudam- is installed separately, which has inscriptions.

The temple will be kept opened between 07.00 Hrs to 10.30 Hrs and 17.00 Hrs to 20.30 Hrs.

HOW TO REACH:

The Temple is on the way from Gurunanak College and Vijayanagara Bus stop in Velachery immediately after Selliamman Temple and Sri Dhandeeswarar Shiva temple.

All the Town buses to Velachery passes through this temple and Bus stop is called as Dhandeeswaram.
