The temple was built with stone from adhistanam tp prastram. The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam and open mukha mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is rectangular in shape to accommodate Shiva's reclining posture. Ma Parvati is at his feet. The sanctum sanctorum is on an adhistanam with jagathy, hree patta kumudam. The Bhitti starts with vedikai. The prastaram consists of valapi, kapotam with nasi kudus and vyyalavari. The vimanam over the bhumi desam is of two talas brick dravida vimanam. Shiva, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu and Brahma are in the tala and greeva koshtams.

LEGENDS
In the process of churning Thiruparkadal for the Amirth, by the Devas and Asuras, using Manthara hill as Maththuu and Vasuki (Snake) as a rope. Couldn’t tolerate the pain, the snake vomits the poison. To avoid mixing the poison with the Amirth, Shiva drank the poison. Ma Parvati holds the poison at the throat by pressing with her hand. Due to this, the throat changed to blue colour. Even though Shiva didn't swallow the poison, he was in an unconscious state and lay down at this place. This is the only place where Shiva is in human form and in a reclining posture. Hence Shiva is called Pallikondeeswarar.
