LEGENDS
As per the legend this place was occupied by the Kaniluvar, Singalavar, Maviluvar, Pooviluvar, and Vellai Vettuvar gave troubles to the Chozha King without paying Taxes. The Chozha King announced giving "Kani Land" to those, to chase people, who give trouble. Hearing this announcement Ragunatha Singaiya Gounder of Eenchan Kulam came with an army and chased them away. In lieu of this, The Chozha King gave the Eenchan Kulam 88 Villages.

They worshiped Madukkarai Sri Sellandi Amman as their Kuladeivam and Perumal as Ishta dheivam. Once a year, all the Eenchan Kula people used to go to Srirangam to give Mudi kanikkai. On one such occasion, they stopped at one place to take a rest. The treasurer left the cash bag and went along with the group. After some distance, the treasurer came to know that he had left the cash bag at the resting place itself. When they came to the spot, found that the cash bag was guarded by a snake. People thought that the snake must be their kuladeivam Sellandi Amman. So they built a Temple for their  Kuladheivam and started worshiping as "Thampiratti Amman".
