This

Some
of the salient features of this temple are…
The
temple faces east with a 3-tier Rajagopuram. A Deepasthambam (short), balipeedam, Dwajasthambam, and Garudalwar are at the entrance of the sanctum. The
sanctum sanctorum consists of a sanctum, antarala, artha mandapam, and a Mukka
mandapam. Moolavar Sri Kalyana Ranganathar is in a standing posture with Sridevi
and Bhudevi is called Kalyana sobhanam. Urchavars are in antarala. The sanctum
is with a padabandha adhistanam. The Kalyana Vimanam is in the sanctum. There
are no statues in the koshtam. Thayar is in a separate temple like Sannadhi also
facing east. Anjaneyar Sannadhi is immediately after the Rajagopuram.
ARCHITECTURE
The whole temple was constructed with bricks and cement concrete. The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala and ardha mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is on Pada bandha adhistanam with jagathy, threepatta Kumudam, and pattikai. The Bhitti starts with Vedikai. Brahma kantha pilasters are shown on the bhitti. The prastaram consists of valapi and kapotam with nasikudus. The superstructure above the prastaram is with one tala, greevam, and Nagara sigaram. Maha Vishnu's various forms are in the Greeva koshtam.
HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
As per the history, the temple was built during the Vijayanagara period, 15th to 16th Century ( but the Bhattar claims it as the 8th Century).
The temple was completely renovated and Ashta Bandhana Jeenorthana Maha Samprokshanam was conducted on 24th Aug 2003 and Sriperumbudur Jeeyar Swamy also participated. Except for Deepa Sthambam, nothing is there to prove its antiquity at present.
During the Vijayanagara period, this temple was built. The Kaikolars ( weavers ), paid many taxes. This was clubbed and asked to pay by a single tax by Ariappan and this this order in the form of palm leaves was sent to Pazhampattaraiyars of Velichai, Kundrathur, and Kasayavakkam. This place was called Kulathur, which has been corrupted to the present name of Kolathur.
