The visit to this Sri Vel Kottam Murugan Temple was a part of Maha
Shivaratri 2020 Temples Visit on 21st February 2020. The list of Shiva temples in

This Village Attuputhur is about 16 KM away from
Kanchipuram on Chennai to Mumbai Highway. After Sri Adheeswarar Temple’s Visit,
Mr Vels Kumaran, took us to this temple. There are Murugan Temples in the names
of Kumara kottam, Kandhakottam and Sengunthar Kottam, this temple is little
different and named as Vel Kottam. Thanks

Some of the salient features of this temple are....
The temple is facing west with a Balipeedam, Dwajasthambam and Elephant
Vahana ( Under a small mandpa ). In the sanctum Murugan is with Sri Valli
Devasena. Procession deities are in the antarala. In koshtam deities of
Murugan’s various forms.
ARCHITECTURE
The Temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala, artha mandapam and a
open mukha mandapam. Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar stucco image is on the top
of the mukha mandapam. A Two tier Vimana is on the adhisthana with a vesara
vimana. The adhi thala with adhisthana was constructed with stone and 1st
tier was constructed with brick. Sala and karna koota are on the second tier.
There is no images in the salas. The greeva koshtas are with stucco images of Murugan’s
various forms.
HISTORY.
With the presence of Elephant Vahana ( the old temples will have Elephant
Vahana instead of Peacock ), it is believed that an old temple might have
existed on the same place. There is no inscriptions in the temple to prove it’s
antiquity.
As per the records available Thiru A. Velu Mudaliar ( Dharmakartha
between 1899 to 1919 ) constructed this temple in 1890’s, through his own fund.
After Thiru A. Velu Mudaliar, his son-in-law Thiru A Vadivelu Mudaliyar ( 1991
to 1939 – 20 years ), took over as Dharmakartha. Thiru A. S. Saravana Mudaliar
has become the next Dharmakartha ( 1939 – 1954 ). Thiru A V Kulandaivel
Mudalaiar ( 1954 to 1985 ) served as Parambara Dharmakartha, as per Dy
Commissioner, HR & CE’s order dated
11-11-1953. Thiru A K Shanmugavel is the the present Dharmakartha since 1985.
Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted in 1995 and 2012 after attending
minor repair works.
POOJAS & CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular poojas, Soorasamharam
was conducted till 1985 and was discontinued after. Thai Kiruthigai, Aadi
Krithigai and Thai poosam Kandhar sashti, are celebrated in a grand manner.

The temple will be kept open for
orukala pooja around 07.00 hrs.
HOW TO REACH:
About 500 meters off from the Chennai Mumbai Highway.
16 KM from Kanchipuram, 36 KM from Arakkonam Junction and 71 KM from
Chennai.
Nearest Railway Station is Kanchipuram and Nearest Railway Junction is
Arakkonam.
