This is the 165^th Thevara Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and the 48^th Sthalam on the south side of the river Kaveri in Chozha Nadu. This place was called Kadavur Mayanam during the 6^th to 7^th Century and is now called Thirukadaiyur Meignanam (Thirumayanam/ Thirumeignanam).

In Periyapuranam, Sekkizhar records that both Thirugnanasambandar and Thirunavukkarasu Swamigal came to this temple after worshiping Lord Shiva of Thirukadaiyur Veerattam. (Thirukadaiyur).

Some of the important features of this temple are as follows.

The temple faces west with a newly built Rajagopuram. An entrance arch is before the Rajagopuram. Balipeedam and Rishabam are after the Rajagopuram. In koshtam Durgai, Dakshinamurthy, Narthana Vinayagar, Lingothbavar, Bhairavar, Arthanareeswarar, Kalyana Sundarar. Gangadhara Murthy and Urcahavars are in the sanctum.

In the praharam, Bhairavar, Vinayagar, Valli Devasena Singaravelar with bow, also called as Villenthiya Velan, Maha Vishnu as Pillai Perumal, Chandikeswarar, Nalvar,  and Chandikeswari. The theertha well called Kasi Theertham, is on the south side of the Temple in the midst of the field.

Ambal is in a separate temple in a standing posture and facing east.  Ambal is with 4 hands in abhaya varada hastam. The artha mandapam is of Vavval nethi style. Stucco images of dwarapalakis are at the entrance of the sanctum.

ARCHITECTURE

The temple consists of the sanctum sanctorum, antarala, and artha mandapam.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS

Since Lord Shiva of this temple was praised by Moovar, the original temple might have existed during the 7^th Century, later reconstructed as a stone temple by Chozhas and extended by the Vijayanagaras.

The inscriptions recorded from this temple belong to Chozhas as well as later Chozhas and Pandyas.  The inscriptions record that playing of the Veena, the reciting of the Vedas and Sri Rudras,  Taxes levied during Kulothunga Chozha-I, and manpower were engaged for nandhavanam.

As per the inscriptions, this place was in Jayangonda Chozha Valanattu Akkurnattu Thirukadavur. This place was also mentioned as Thiruthondar Thogai Mangalam, Sivapada Sekara Mangalam, Thiruneetruchozha Mangalam, and lord Shiva was called as Thirumayanamudaya Peruman.

Maha kumbhabhishekam was performed on 10^th September 2014 after constructing the Rajagopuram and renovations.

LEGENDS

As per the legend, Brahma was burnt by Lord Shiva and then converted into holy water. Hence, this place is called “Thiru Mayanam”. Since Brahma is the creator of this world, the creation has come to a standstill. Devas requested Lord Shiva to pardon Brahma and reinstate him. Lord Shiva pardoned Brahma and reinstated him for the creation of this universe. Further, Lord Shiva gave Shiva Upadesam / Gnanam to Brahma. Hence, this place is being called “Thiru Meignanam”.

There are 5 places considered as holy places in Mayanam. They are Kasi mayanam, Kachi (Kanchipuram) mayanam, Thirukadaiyur Mayanam, Kazhimayanam (Sirkazhi), Veezhi Nalur Mayanam.

Kadavur Theertham, alias Kasi Theertham, is in the form of a well,  near the temple in the midst of the field. It is believed that this well was created by Lord Shiva with water from the Ganga to worship Lord Shiva by Markandeya Maharishi. This theertham will be taken to Thirukadaiyur temple Moolavar Abhishekam and will not be used for other deities or other purposes. It is believed that on Panguni month Ashwini Nakshatra day, River Ganga in the form of theertham was brought for Markandeyar. Hence, this theertham is called “Ashwini Theertham”. To commemorate this event pancha murtis procession will be taken out on that day.

In another legend, a King performed Abhishekam using the above theertham to Sri Brahmapureeswarar of this temple, and immediately a crack was observed on the Shiva Linga. A crack can still be seen on the moolavar.

Apart from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on Skanda Sashti in the month Aippasi (Oct–Nov), Thirukarthigai in the month Karthigai (Nov–Dec), Thiruvathirai in the month Margazhi (Dec–Jan), Maha Shivaratri in the month Masi (Feb–March), Theerthavari on the Ashwini star day in the month Panguni (March–April), and on monthly pradosams.

The temple is 2 km from Sri Amirthakadeswarar Temple, 23.1 km from Mayiladuthurai, 24 km from Sirkazhi, 27 km from Vaitheeswaran Koil, 57 km from Kumbakonam, and 261 km from Chennai.
