HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
Since Thirugnanasambandar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva o this temple, the original temple might have existed before 7th Century and latter reconstructed as a stone temple during Chozha period and further extended by Vijayanagaras / Marathas.

This is one of the 27 temple under administrative control of Dharumapura Adheenam. Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 20th April 1969 and 09th February 2017 after renovations.

LEGENDS
This is the birth place of Thiru Neelakanda Yazhpanar’s mother. When he visited this place Thiru Neelakanda Yazhpanar’s relatives asked him to play the Yazh for Thirugnanasambandar’s hymns. Since he said he couldn’t play his relatives tried to break the Yazh. Thirugnanasambandar stopped them and asked Yazhpanar to play, how much he can for his “Yazh Moori Pathigam”. This was recorded by Sekkizhar in Periyapuranam, under Thirugnanasambandar puranam. Hence Lord Shiva is called as “Yazh Moori Nathar, which was corrupted to Yazhmurinathar.

It is believed that Maha Vishnu, Brahma, Yudhisthira also known as Dharman worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple.
