Adukkankal Ancient Jain Caves / Tamizhi Inscriptions and Rock art, Neganur Patti, Neganurpatti, Villupuram District, Tamil Nadu.

The second visit to this Adukkankal was a part of Villupuram Heritage Walk organized by History Trails, on 24^th and 25^th July 2021. The first Visit  to this Neganurpatti Adukkankal ancient Jain caves, a Jain Heritage site was organized by REACH Foundation on 15^th Feb 2015. It was told that this was discovered Mr Veeraraghavan of Villupuram and Published by K. Rajavelu.

This place is called as ‘ADUKKU MALAI’ otherwise known as Adukkamparai by the locals. There is no proper approach road to this place. This is monument is a three individual big rocks sitting one on the another. A 4 line Tamil Brahmi/ Tamizhi inscription was inscribed on the base of the boulder. The inscription records the construction of school. The inscription belongs to 4^th century.  The inscription records that Sekkanthi’s mother SekkanthaNNi, who belongs to Village Perumpukazh, had created this Jain Palli. 

The inscription reads as ….

1. பெரும்பொகழ்
2. செக்கந்தி தயிரு
3. சேக்கந்தண்ணிசெ
4. ய்வித்த பள்ளி

என்பது கல்வெட்டு வாசகமாகும். பெரும்பொகழ் என்ற ஊரைச் சேர்ந்த சேக்கந்தி என்பவரின் தாயான சேக்கந்தண்ணி என்பவர் இந்த பள்ளியைச் செய்வித்தார் என்பது இதன் பொருளாகும். முதல்வரி கடைசி எழுத்து ”ழ்”. க. இராசவேலுவால் “ய்” என்று படிக்கப்பட்டது. இரண்டாம் வரி கடைசி எழுத்து ”ரு”,  எம்.டி சம்பத்தால் “உ” என்று படிக்கப்பட்டது.

கல்வெட்டுச் செய்தி

கல்வெட்டில் சேக்கந்தண்ணி என்பதை சேக்கந் அண்ணி என்று பிரித்துப் படிக்க வேண்டும். இவரைச் சமணப் பெண் துறவியாகக் கொள்ளலாம். சேக்கிழார் என்பதில் “சே” குடிப் பெயராக இருப்பது போல இங்கும் குடிப்பெயர் எனக்கருதலாம். “சே” என்பது காளை என்ற பொருளில் அகப்பாடலில் ( அகம் 36 “கயிறு இடு கதச் சேப்போல” ) குறிக்கப்படுகின்றது. கந்தி என்ற சொல் சீவக சிந்தாமணியில்  ( 26:49 கறந்த பால்  அணைய கந்தி ) பெண் துறவி என்ற பொருளில்  கையாளப்பட்டுள்ளது. சூடாமணி கந்தி கௌந்தி  என்ற சொற்களுக்கும் பெண்துறவி என்று பொருள் சொல்கிறது. தாயிரு என்பது தற்கால கன்னட மொழியில் தாயாருக்கு வழக்கு சொல்லாக  உள்ளது. அண்ணி என்பது மரியாதைச் சொல்லாக பயன்பட்டுள்ளது. பெரும்புகை என்றொரு ஊர் அருகில் உள்ளது. அங்குள்ள குன்றிலும்  கற்படுகைகள் கண்டறியப்பட்டுள்ளன. இக்கல்வெட்டில்  சொல்லப்படும் பெரும்பொகழ் இன்றைய “பெரும்புகை” யாக இருக்கலாம்.

 

ROCK ART

Under the big rock there are prehistoric painting. The painting consists of men with various actions like holding some thing in hands, playing etc. The paintings are drawn with white ochre. This is estimated to be of 5000 - 6000 years old.

This Heritage site faced a threat of demolition  for quarry. The same was stopped after the Historians, Jains and Heritage enthusiasts pleaded to Tamil Nadu Government. 

HOW TO REACH :

The Place Neganur patti is on the Road Melakkalvai to Neganur, turn right before right and the Adukku parai a about 2 KM.

This Adukkankal Ancient  Jain monument  is about 7.2 KM from Gingee, 47 KM from Villupuram, 47 KM from Thiruvannamalai, 58 KM from Thirukovilur and 156 KM from Chennai.

Nearest Railway Junction is Villupuram.
