The
Visit to this Kottai Muniyappan Temple at Thoravalur in Tiruppur District was a
part of “Ayyanar, Durgai Sculptures, Hero Stone and Memorial stones in Shiva & Amman Temples of Tiruppur and Erode Districts Visit, on
27th and 28th February 2022. On the way to Sri Veeramathi
Amman temple from Thoravalur Amman Temple, happened to see this Muniappan
Temple.
Usually, in the Kongu region, big-size stucco
Muniyappan images are built on the outskirts of the Villages. Since this
Maniyappan temple called as Kottai Muniyappan Temple, the original temple might
have been built inside a Fort, as a guarding deity to the Fort. A similar temple also exists at Perundurai, which is about 15 KM from this place. Unfortunately, there is no evidence that a fort existed at Thoravalur.
The
big stucco 4 Muniyappan is in a sitting posture facing North. A Stone
Karuppaswamy and Saptha kannis are on the left side of Muniyappan. Of the 4, three
are in same size and the right one is a little bigger. Muniyappan have with ferocious
look without any weapons and both hands are on their thigh. On the opposite
side, 3 Muniyappan stone images are kept of which one Muniyappan is in kneeled
position. All three are holding swords and shields. In addition to this, there are two Sikkle/Aruvals in a vertical position and Trishuls are erected.
