The
visit to this Sri Pidari Veerathamman at Pallikaranai was a part of “Shiva and
Vishnu Temples Visit at Urapakkam, Arungal, Kannivakkam, Kumuzhi and
Melakottaiyur”, on 20th
February 2022. When I inquired for any old temples in Pallikaranai area, people
directed me to this Amman Temple, which has unique features. This is a Ellai Kaval Deivam, Gramadevathai and a
kulatheivam for 7 Villages around Pallikaranai.

Some of the salient features of this temple are…
The temple is facing North with an entrance arch.
Soolams are erected in front of the temple. Stucco image of Veerathamman,
Vinayagar and Murugan are on the top of the mukha mandapam. Dwarapalakis /
Dwara Sakthis are at the entrance of Sanctum Sanctorum. Stucco image of Amman
sitting on Lion, Vinayagar, Parasuramar and Pothuraja are on the top of the entrance
to the sanctum sanctorum. The main deity Sri Pidari Veerathamman is in sitting
posture with abhaya varadha hastam. Jwala mudi is on Veerathamman’s head. Balipeedam
and simha vahanam is in the mandapam. Stucco images of Lord Shiva as
Arthnareeswarar, Maha Vishnu, Sri Veerathamman’s various forms are on the
mandapam pillars. Ambal’s avathara murtis are in the koshtam.
In praharam, Vinayagar, Varahi, anthill with Nagars
under a peepal tree, and Saptakannis in the form of Stones.
ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala,
ardha mandapam and a mukha mandapam. The temple was constructed with cement and
brick. An 2 tier 8 sided / octagonal Dravida Vimanam is over the sanctum sanctorum.
Amman’s various forms are in the 1st tier and greeva Koshtams. The sanctum sanctorum is of square in shape.
HISTORY
AND INSCRIPTION
It
is claimed that this temple was existed before Sri Adipureeswarar Shiva temple.
Last Chariot festival was conducted in the year 1982.
The Krishnadevaraya’s period ( 1525 CE ) Tamil inscription mixed with grantha available at Sri Adhipureeswarar Temple records, the equal sharing of the Tax income from the houses ( 1.25 panam for a month ) with periphery markings as south of Pashathanagar koil, north of sulakkal, east of Veerathal koil to be given to Parvatheeswaramudayar and Veerathal ( Kaliamman ) for maintenance. The inscription also mentions a two thari ( தறி ) for Thirupana Perumal.
A
Silver Kavacham was gifted by Thambiran Nayakar ( Saidapet ), T Neelavathy
Ammal, T Selvam Nayakar ( Pallikaranai ) and Sasikala family.
The
Temple was reconstructed and Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted 15th
September 2013.
POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular Poojas special poojas are conducted on Fridays and Aadi month. Annual Festival with charriot procession was conducted on 14th Auguts 1982. After that it was discontinued due to misunderstanding between two groups and who should give the first respect.
