LEGENDS
As per the legend the 11 temples of Thirunangur are closely associated with each other. After Datchayini jumped in to Dakshan’s Yaga kunda. Shiva took the body of Datchayini and danced furiously. Each time the jada mudi touches the ground, 11 forms of Shiva appeared. The Celestial deities afraid, that if Shiva’s dance continued, the entire creation will be ceased. So they requested Maha Vishnu to stop Shiva’s dance. On Seeing Maha Vishnu Shiva became normal and requested Maha Vishnu to appear 11 different forms at this place, Thirunangur.  Maha Vishnu is also called as “Thamaraikannudiyabiran - the one with lotus eyes”.

As per the legend, once sathyabama, expressed her wish to have a parijatha flower. Krishna went in search of Parijatha flowers and couldn’t found anywhere. So he did penance on Shiva, to seek his help to identify the flower. Shiva reveled this place with abundant parijatha flowers. Krishna along with his consorts Bama and Rukmani stayed here, hence this place is considered as Southern Dwaraka.

Kavalam means a dense flower forest also a small quantity of food, etc. Krishna accepts whatever offered by the devotees. Hence this place is called as Kavalampadi. ( It was told that there is no madapalli to cook naivedyam to the deity of this temple ).

Rudra chopped the 5th head of Brahma and got rid of Brahmahathi dosham by worshiping Krishna of this temple.

As per another legend, Vishvaksena was the son of Kundalai and Varuna, the rain god. Kundalai was asked to disturb the penance of Dhurvasa by Indra. Angered Dhurvasa cursed Kundalai to born as a hunters daughter. Varuna loved her and had the son of Vishvaksena and became the head of Nithyasuri, through his penance and lived in Paramapada.
