This
Rayagopura, traditionally known as mahadvara or Gopalarayana Mahadvara,
situated on the southern part of Cheluvanarayana Swamy Temple, is an important
structure. It is an incomplete structure with only a basement; four free-standing
pillars, with attractive carvings of female figures and scroll bands, are
noticeable. This Mahadvara is said to have been built by Dalapathi Gopalaraya
of Ramadevaraya, the second son of Srirangaraya, a representative of the Vijayanagara Empire during the 16th century. If completed, this would have been a
majestic entrance with a tall gopura.
