HISTORY
AND INSCRIPTIONS
The
temple authorities claim that the temple is 2300 years old and the only temple
built for Vinayagar with Dwajasthambam and an exclusive chariot.
Avvaiyar
has sung Vinayagar Agaval, and Adi Shankara has composed the Ganesha Pancha
Ratna on Vinayagar of this temple. As per Vignesh Bhattar, the palm leaves of
the Ganesha Pancha Ratna, written by Adi Shankara, and the Copperplate will be kept
for public view during the 6th day of the annual festival.
The
present structure belongs to the 12th to 13th Century CE and was built by the Pandyas, and later, the mukha mandapam was extended by the Vijayanagaras and the Thiruvaduthurai Adheenam. The 5-tier Rajagopuram was built in 2008.
During the 2008 thirupani, the koshta images Vinayagar, Medha Dakshinamurthy, Jala Durga,
Kanni Vinayagar, Subramaniar, and Navagrahas were installed.
Maha
kumbhabhishekams were conducted in 1916, 1923, 1945, 1981, and 2008.
LEGENDS
During the 5th Century, the Pandyas ruled this place with Korkai as capital. One
of the Pandya King Komaraballava brought Veda Pandits, who are experts in the Vedas, from the western seashore of the Konkan region, and conducted the Yagas. The Veda
Pandits worshipped salagrama Maha Vishnu and Sona Padra stone Ganapathi in
their homes. In one of the Yaga, Veda Pandits are short of one Pandit for 1008.
They prayed to Vinayagar for help. At their request, Vinayagar participated as a
1008th Pandit. Hence, the Vinayagar of this temple is called Ayirathu
Enn Vinayagar. As a gift, the King gave away his country to this Vinayagar.
The
Veda Pandits lived around the tank, which gets water from the Thamiraparani. Hence, this place was called Chaturvedimangalam and later called Thirumangai
Nagar. After the worship of Murugan, known as Arumugar, flourished in this
area. Hence, this place was changed to Arumugamangalam.
This
temple is a graha dosha, Kala sarpa dosha, and a parihara sthalam for Ketu,
since in Navagrahas, Ketu is with adhistana thevada Maha Ganapathi and Kalyani
Ambal samedha Kalatheeswarar.
POOJAS

Apart
from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on Fridays, Amavasya Days,

The annual festival will be conducted in the month of Chithirai. On the 7th and
8th day, the utsava murtis of Natarajar and Pancha Mukha Vinayagar
