Sri Vaikunda Pathi Perumal Kovil, ஸ்ரீ வைகுண்டபதி பெருமாள் கோவில், Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to this Sri Vaikunda Pathi Perumal Temple at Thirumanthira Nagar, a part of Thoothukudi, was a part of the “Temples and Heritage Sites of Thoothukudi District Visit” on 15th February 2025.


This temple is on the south side of Sri Sankara Rameswarar, and the Shiva temple trustees are involved in the renovation. This temple is believed to be the 10th temple and an abimana sthalam of the Sri Vaikuntapathi Perumal Temple.

Some of the salient features of this temple are….
The temple faces east, with an entrance arch. Balipeedam, Dwajasthambam, and Garudan are after the entrance arch. Dwarapalakas Jayan and Vijayan are on both sides of the entrance to the ardha mandapam. Moolavar Sri Vaikuntapathi is in a standing posture with Sridevi and Bhudevi.

In praharam, Sridevi, Bhudevi, Andal, and Anjaneyar. Utsavars Maha Vishnu with Sridevi & Bhudevi, Anjaneyar, Garudan, Ramar with Sita and Lakshmanar, Brahma & Saraswati.

ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of the sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam, and mukha mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is on a kapota bandha upanam and pada bandha adhistanam with jagathy, threepatta kumudam, and pattikai. The bhitti starts with vedikai. The pilasters are Vishnukantha pilasters with square bases, kalasam, kudam, lotus petals mandi, palakai, and pushpa pothyal. The prastaram consists of valapi and kapotam with nasi kudus. The temple was constructed with stone from the upanam to the prastaram. The vimanam above the bhumidesam is of two tiers, constructed with bricks. The Sigaram is of dravida style. Maha Vishnu’s various forms are on the tala and greeva koshtas. 





HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The temple is believed to belong to the 13th-century Pandya period, and no inscriptions were found in this temple. And Moolavar / Utsavars belongs to the Jadavarman Sundara Pandyan period. It is believed that this temple was shifted 3 times, and lastly from Pilupanchan kulam.

As per paper news, renovation of Mandapa, Maha Lakshmi, Andal, Anjaneyar Sannidhi (work started on 08.09.2024), and Parivara sannidhis, 64-pillar mandapam are under renovation with granite stones at Rs. 4 crore.

Maha Kumbhabhisham was conducted in 1985 and 2003.

POJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular poojas as per Pancharatra Agama, special poojas are conducted on Puratasi Saturdays, Vaikasi Thiruvazhi, Puratasi Garudaseva, Rama Navami, Anjaneyar Jayanthi, Krishna Jayanthi with Uriyadi Thiruvizha, and Navaratri. Samudra /Sea theerthavari is also celebrated, similar to Puri Jagannath Temple, Adhi Jaganathar Temple, Thirupullani, and Triplicane Parthasarathy Temple.

The temple is under palalayam, and the temple will be open from 07.00 hrs to 11.00 hrs and from 17.00 hrs to 20.00 hrs.

HOW TO REACH
The temple is in the eastern part of Tuticorin City, about a km from Tuticorin/Thoothukudi Railway Station, 2 km from New Bus Stand, and 17 km from Tuticorin Airport.
The temple is about 39 km from Thiruchendur and 56 km from Tirunelveli Railway Station.
The nearest Railway station is Thoothukudi.
