This is one of the
cemeteries maintained by the Madras Cemetery Board. From the 1864 report of the Madras Presidency Administration, the land at Adyar estuary was bought for Rs
1202, by the British. The Cemetery is divided into two parts, one for
the Catholics and the other for the Christians of other denominations as per
Vincent D Sousa. In the Catholic part, there are a lot of spaces between tombs. One of
the oldest is 1856 or 1846, still older may be there. It was said that due to
space limitations tombs are excavated and bones are buried in another place, to
give way for the new ones. Some of the converted Christian's names are Paul
Gopalakrishnan and Visalakshi. etc, are noticed. It was very sad to a tomb of the Portuguese period for children aged 1 and 2 years.
Some of the
important person’s tombs are, the Comedian cine actor Chandrababu ( For details in
Wikipedia ) and Valampuri John, a speaker called ‘Varthai Siddhar’ ( for details in Wikipedia).
People used to visit the cemetery to pray for their dead ones.

On the way to
Quibble Island Cemetery we crossed the Adyar Creek- presently called Tholkappiar Ecological Park through a Karpagam bridge. It was an awesome view and made us feel that we were in one of the best holiday places in this universe.
…. To be
continued ( Adyar Battle ).
