The list of Shiva temples in and around Kanchipuram, with links to Google Photos, Location links on Google Maps, and Location QR Codes, has been posted already in this blog. The visit to the Sri Muktheeswarar and Garudeeswarar Temples at Kanchipuram, Addison Pettai, was a part of the 2020 Maha Shivaratri Temples Visit, on 21^st February 2020.

The 18th-century saint Sri Sivagnana Swamigal had written the sthala purana of this temple, in Kanchipuranam under Muktheesa padalam.  

16. முத்தீசப் படலம் (798 - 814)

814   சித்த மாசொரீஇ விளங்குமே காலியார்

            திருக்குறிப் புத்தொண்டர்

      அத்த லத்தினில் வீடிபே றெய்தினர்

            மற்றுமா யிடைப்போற்றி

      முத்தி சேர்ந்தவர் எண்ணிலார் மதிமுடி

            முழுமுதல் அடிப்போதின்

      வைத்த சிந்தையின் முக்குறும் பெறிந்துயர்

Some of the important features of this temple are...

This temple faces east with a pond in front. The 3-tier Rajagopuram is on the west side. The sanctum sanctorum is about 3 feet below the ground level. Rishabam and balipeedam are in front of the mandapam. 

The temple consists of the sanctum sanctorum, ardha mandapam and a mukha mandapam. Stucco images of Lord Shiva with Parvati and the story of this temple at the entrance of the mandapam top. There are no murtis in the koshtam.

In the praharam Vinayagar, Garudeeswarar, Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Kala Bhairava, Navagrahas, Suryan, Naalvar, Shanieswarar, and Thiru Kurippu Thonda Nayanar.

LEGEND

As per the legend, Thiru Kurippu Thonda Nayanar, one of the 63 Nayanmars,  used to wash the clothes of a Sivanadiyar every day and had the power to know the wishes and needs of Sivanadiyars. Lord Shiva wants to show his Bhakthi to this world; he came to Thiru Kurippu Thonda Nayanar’s Village as a Sivanadiyar. Gave his clothes to be washed and said he did not have any other clothes to wear. Thiru Kurippu Thonda Nayanar promised to return on the same day after washing. After washing, he hung the clothes to dry. Lord Shiva made it rain, and the clothes became wetter till evening. Since he could not fulfil his promise, Thiru Kurippu Thonda Nayanar tried to kill himself by hitting his head on the rock. Lord Shiva held his head with his hand and appeared as Rishabaroodar and blessed him. To prove this, the temple is being maintained by the ‘Ekaliyar' (washermen) Community.

GARUDESHWAR  

The Garudeshwar Sannadhi-like Temple is inside the premises of Muktheeswarar Temple. Before Thiru Kurippu Thondar Puranam, the 18th-century Sri Sivagnana Swamigal had written the Sthala Purana of this Garudeshwar Temple

16. முத்தீசப் படலம் (798 - 814)

798   கற்றைச் செஞ்சைடக் காமரு கொள்கையீர்

      அற்றம் நீத்தருள் ஆதிபி தேச்சரஞ்

      சொற்ற னம்புள் ளரசு தொழுதுசீர்க்

799   காசிபர் மனைவியர் கலகம் விளைத்தல்

      மன்னு காசிபன் றன்மைன யாட்டியர்

      பன்னு கத்துருப் பாவை சுபருணை

      என்னும் மாதர் இருவரூந் தம்முரு

      நன்ன லத்தை நயந்துகொண் டாடினர் 

800   தத்தம் மேனித் தகைநலஞ் சாற்றுபு

      மெய்த்த பூசல் விளைத்தனர் தோற்றவர்

      உய்த்த வெஞ்சிறை மேவுகென் றொட்டினர்

      அத்த வத்தனை யண்மி வினாயினர் 

801   பைத்த பாப்பகல் அல்குற் பணிமொழிக்

      கத்து ருப்பெயர்க் காரிகை வேறலாற்

      சுத்த நீர்மைச் சுபருணைப் பேரிய

      மைத்த கண்ணியை வெஞ்சிறை மாட்டினாள் 

802   வீடு செய்யென அங்கவன் வேண்டலுங்

      கூடு மூன்றாம் விசும்பிற் குளிர்மதிப்

      பாடு தோன்றும் அமிழ்தமப் பண்ணவர்

      நீடு காவலின் உள்ளது நேரிழாய்  

803   அதுகொ ணர்ந்திங் களித்துநின் வெஞ்சிறை

      விதுமு கத்தி விடுவித்துக் கொள்ளெனக்

      கதிசெய் பூண்முலைக் கத்துரு கூறலும்

      மதிய ழிந்து வருந்திச் சுபருணை  

804   கருடன் பிறத்தல்

      ஆசில் மெய்த்தவம் ஆற்றி அரும்பெறற்

      காசி பன்னருள் பெற்றுக் கலுழனை

      மாசி லாத மகவென வீன்றனள்

      பேசி னாளம் மகற்கிது பெற்றியே

805   கேட்டெ ழுந்து கிளர்ந்து விடைகொடு

      கோட்ட மில்புட் குலத்தர சன்னைதன்

      வாட்டம் நீப்ப வலிந்து கடுகிவிண்

      நாட்டின் இன்னமிழ் துற்றுழி நண்ணினான்  

806   அங்கண் வைகிய காவல ராயினார்

      தங்கள் வரீந் தபப்பொரு தேற்றெதிர்

      வெங்கண் வெண்கய வேந்தைன யொப்பினான்

      பொங்கு வேகப் பொலஞ்சிறைக் காற்றினால்

807   அமிழ்தம் வெளளவி அகல்வுழி மாலெதிர்ந்

      தமிழ்சி னத்தின் உருத்துவெம் போர்செயத்

      தமிய னாய உவணனுந் தாக்கினான்

      இமிழி சைப்போர் இருவர்க்கும் மூண்டதே  

808   ஏழ டுக்கிய முந்நாள் இருவரும்

      தாழ்வொன் றின்றிச் சமர்பெரி தாற்றுழி

      ஆழி மாயன் அகமகிழ் கூர்ந்துயர்

      பாழி வன்சிறைப் பார்ப்பினை நோக்கியே

809   வன்புள் வேந்தநின் வீரம் மகிழ்ந்தனன்

      என்பு டைவரங் கொள்ளென ஈங்கிவன்

      உன்பெ ருந்திறற் குள்மகிழ்ந் தேன்மற்றேன்

      றன்பு டைவரங் கொள்ளெனச் சாற்றினான்  

810   திருமால் வரம் பெறல்

      மாய னம்மொழி கேட்டு மகிழ்ச்சியின்

      தூயை யோதிய சொல்தவ றாயெனின்

      நீயெ னக்கு நெடுந்தைக யூர்தியாய்

      ஏயும் இவ்வரம் யான்கொள நல்கென்றான்  

811   ஆர்த்தி கூர்தர அம்மொழி கேட்டொரு

      மூர்த்தம் எண்ணி உயிர்த்து மொழிந்தெமய்

      வார்த்தை யிற்பிறழ் வஞ்சியற் றாகெனச்

      சீர்த்தி யாலன் விடைபெற்றுச் சென்றனன்

812   கருடன் வரம் பெறல்

      மறுவில் கத்துரு மாட்டுச் சுதக்குடங்

      குறியெ திர்ப்பைக் கொளக்கொடுத் தன்னையச்

      சிறையின் நீக்கினன் சீறர வங்கள்பால்

      கறுவு செய்து கொலைசெயுங் காதலான்.  

813    அறுசீரடி யாசிரிய விருத்தம்

      கச்சி வைப்பினை யெய்தியா தீபிதக்

            கடிநகர் வடகீழ்ப்பால்

      நச்சும் அன்னைதன் சிறைக்குவீ டருளும்முத்

            தீசைனநயந்தேத்தி

      இச்சை யாற்றினிற் பெருவரம் பெற்றனன்

            எறுழ்வலிப் பணிக்கூட்டம்

      அச்ச முற்றிடச் சிறெகழு வளியினில்

            அலைத்தெழு புள்வேந்தன்  

Moolavar: Garudeesar / Garudeeswarar

There is a separate sannidhi for Garudeshwar. As per the legend, there was a debate between the two wives of Kasiba Maharishi about who was more beautiful among them. When asked, Kasiba Maharishi said that Kathru was more beautiful than Subarunai. So Kathru put Subarunai in jail and said she would be released if she gave the Amairtha to be brought from Indralok. The Garuda, born to Kathru, went to Indralok and defeated Indra, and brought the Amirtha. 

On the way, he met Maha Vishnu and had a fight for 21 days. To appreciate the bravery of Garuda, Maha Vishnu asked him to get a boon. Instead, Garuda asked Maha Vishnu to get a boon. So Maha Vishnu asked Garuda to become one of his Vahana.  After releasing his mother Kathru, he installed a Shiva Linga in this Garudeswaram and worshipped. After worshipping Lord Shiva, Garuda became the Vahana to Maha Vishnu. Worshipping Lord Shiva Garudeshwar, one will conquer their enemies and will be relieved from the troubles during this birth.

TEMPLE TIMINGS:

The temple will be kept open from 07.00 hrs to 11.00 hrs, and from 17.30 hrs to 21.00 hrs.

Autos are available from the Bus stand.

About 1 km from the Kanchipuram Bus stand on the Kanchipuram to Chengalpattu bus route, 2.0 km from Kanchipuram Railway Station, 26 km from Arakkonam Railway Junction and 77 km from Chennai Central Station.

The nearest Railway Station is Kanchipuram, and the nearest Railway Junction is Arakkonam.
