This is a part of Shiva and Vishnu Temples visit between
Marakkanam and Tindivanam. Happened to
see two Nadukarkal in Marakkanam and Munnur Shiva temples. These types of nadukarkal are erected in memory of a hero who sacrifices himself by cutting his head and offer to Kali to get victory over a war or for a king or to get cured from a decease etc,.
NAVAKANDAM
– ARIKANDAM
( அரிகண்டம் ) AT BHOOMEESHWARAR TEMPLE MARAKKANAM
This Nadukal is an arikanda statue. The hero
is looking staright with a sword in his right hand cutting head. The
left hand holds his tuft. Ornaments are
shown on his neck and hand. A half dress
is shown below his hip. The hero kept his left and right leg, looks like
marching forward. There is no inscriptions found. This Navakanda nadukal may
belongs to 16th to 17th century.
This Navakanda – Arikanda nadukal
is before the Dwajasthambam of Sri Bhoomeeswarar temple, at Marakkanam on East
Coast Road, 62 KM from Mahabalipuram and 34 KM from Pondicherry.

NAVAKANDAM – SAAVAN SILAI – ( ARIKANDAM – அரிகண்டம் ) AT SRI
ADAVALLEESWARAR TEMPLE MUNNUR.
This Navakanda Nadukal is
installed in Munnur Sri Adavalleeswarar temple muka mandapam. The local people
calls this as a Saavan silai.
In this nadukal The hero is
holding a staright sword in both the
hands.The hero stands staright in samabanga posture. Ornamaents are shown on
hands and neck. A half dress is shown below the hip. The ears are elongated and
might be wering ear studs of little heavy. His tuft looks cute. The Navakanda
statue was chiseled like a statue instead of a bas-relief. The Navakanda statue
may belongs to 16th to 17th Century.
Munnur is 3 km off from the
Tindivanam to Marakkanam route. About 31
km from Marakkanam and 22 km from Tindivanam.
