Maha Shivaratri 2020 – Kanchipuram Shiva Temples Visit- 5

The visit to this Sri Periya Thambiran Eswarar Temple and Veda Vanneeswarar Temple, at Thenambakkam was a part of 2020 Maha Shivaratri Temples Visit, on 21st February 2020. The temple is on Military road in Thiruvalluvar Nagar, Thenambakkam. This is a unique temple in which moolavar and Consort are not in the form of Shiva Linga.

Consort : Sri Tripura Sundari

Some of the salient features of this temple are....

The temple is facing east with balipeedam and Nandhi. In the sanctum Shiva is sitting on Nandhi and Parvati is sitting on Simha vahana. Vishwakarma, Ambal Tripura Sundari. One the opposite is a male god with two Consorts are in sitting Posture. The temple consists of Sanctum, artha mandapam and a mukha mandapam. Sri Vinayagar and Murugan are at the entrance of artha mandapam. There is no vimana over the sanctum. Stucco image of Shiva and Parvati is on the top of mukha mandapam.

The 18^th Century Sivagnana Swamigal had written Vanneeswarar temple’s sthala purana in Kanchi puranam. ( do not know whether this belongs to this temple or not ) The same is reproduced as given below...

மூதழற் கடவுள் தன்னுடன் பிறந்த முன்னவர்

மும்மையர் உள்ளார்

பேதுறா மதுகை மூவரும் விண்ணோர் பெறுமவி

சுமக்கலாற் றாது

மேதகும் ஆவி இறந்தனர் அதனை விரிதழற்

பண்ணவன் நோக்கி

யாதினிப் புரிவல் எனக்குமிவ் விடும்பை யெய்துமே

யென்றுள மழுங்கி

மகோததி யனைய ஐயரம் பையர்தம் (மகோததி – பெரிய கடல்)

வாவியி னுள்ளுறக் கரந்து

சகோதரர் தம்மை இழந்தவன் றனக்குச்

சகோதரம் நீதடம் புனேல

உகாதெனைப் புரத்தி யென்றுரைத் தங்கண்

உறைந்தனன் அன்றுதொட் டளிகள்

முகேரனப் பாயும் மலர்த்தடம் அதற்கு

மொழிபெயர் சகோதர தீர்த்தம்.

எங்கணுந் துருவிப்

பெரிதிளைப் பெய்தி யாண்டுவந் துறலும் பெருந்தடத்

துறையுமீன் அவர்க்குத்

தெரிதர வியம்பிற் றாகவெங் கனலோன் செயிர்த்தடைக்

கலம்புகுந் தேனைப்

பரிவுறக் காட்டிக் கொடுத்தநீர் தூண்டிற் படுகொலை

யுறுகெனச் சபித்து

* மீன்கள் அக்கினி தேவனைத் தங்களுக்குக் காட்டினைமயால்

தேவர்கள் அவற்றிற்கு இமையாநாட்டம் அளித்தனர் என்ப.

மின்னெ வெளிக்கொண் டிரந்துநின் றைழக்கும்

விண்ணவர் தங்களை நோக்கி

முன்னுறப் போமின் வருவெலன் றியம்பி முளரிநீர்த்

தடமதன் கரையின்

மன்னுவன் னீச வள்ளலை யிருத்தி மரபுளி

யருச்சனை யாற்றி

அன்னவன் அருளாற் பெற்றனன் இமையோர்

அவியெலாஞ் சுமந்திடு மாற்றல்

தமையன்மார் மூவர் சுமக்கலாற் றாது

தளர்வுறும் அவியெலாந் தானே

கைமயுறப் பொருக்கும் மதுகைபெற் றிமையோர்

குழாத்தினுட் கலந்தனன் கனலோன்

இமையவில் வாங்கிப் புரிசைமூன் றிருத்த

யெந்தைவன் னீசனை யண்மி

அமைவரும் அன்பால்வழி படப்பெற்றோர்

அருந்திறல் எய்திவீ டடைவார்.

Moolavar : Sri Veda Vanneeswarar

Veda Vanneeswarar temple is on the south Side of Thambiran Eswaran Temple. This temple consists of Sanctum and artha mandapam. Durgai and Dakshinamurthy are in the artha mandapam. There is no Vimana over the sanctum sanctorum. Nagars, Raghu and Kethu are on a platform. Navagrahas are in the praharam.

HISTORY.

It is believed that the Veda Vanneeswarar temple is about 1500 Years old. The earliest history of the Thambiran Eswaran temple is not known. As per the inscriptions this temple was under the control of Vishwakarma Trust since 1866 CE latter trustee are changed in 1904, 1980, 1995 and the Trust was renamed as Vishwakarma Mahasabha and the same was registered in 2012. The Chakkarathalwar temple also came in to the control of this trust.
