HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The inscriptions recorded from this temple and nearby rocks belongs to Pallavas, Chozhas, Pandyas and Vijayanakas. From the recorded inscriptions the original Temple belongs to 8th Century Pallava Period. As Per the inscription this place was called as Payyanur alias “Rajakesari Chaturvedi Mangalam” and Lord Shiva was called as Etteeswaramudaya Nayanar.

The Pallava King Vijaya Nandivikramavarman’s ( Pallavamalla ) 37th reign year ( 768 CE ) inscription records an agreement by the ganattar of Payyanur in respect of 6400 kadi of paddy, measured by standard measure por-kal, received by them from Nagan, a merchant of Ulakkuni, residing at Mamallapuram for digging annually ( ie removing silt ) from the big tank – pereri – of the village out of the interest there from. It also stipulates a levy of 16 kadi of paddy per patti of lands that were  obviously irrigated by the tank, irrespective of their sale or mortgage. The document is ( attested ) by Settanandi ( Jyesthanandi..?) evidently functioning from the Kuri.

The Pandya king Tribhuvana Chakravarthy Konerimaikondan Kulashekara Deva’s 24+1 reign year inscription  records the order of Nilagangaraiyar granting some Land as devadhana to the temple of Ettisvaramudaiya Nayanar of Payyanur, evidently after settling a dispute over this land with the sabha by consulting the inscription engraved in this temple which was however damaged on certain places. Two ascetics are stated to have given up their lives on account of the dispute.
