The
visit to this Sri Azhageswarar Temple at Peranakavur of Uthiramerur Taluk in
Kanchipuram District, was a part of Heritage Visit to Salavakkam, Porpandal and
Peranakkavur, Shiva Temples, Pallava period Inscriptions and Heritage Sites on 15th
October 2021. Thanks to Raj Panneerselvam, Udhayaraja Rajasekaran from Thiruvannamalai and Kesavan for their help
and travelling along with me in this Heritage Visit. Moolavar : Sri AzhageswararConsort : Sri Annapoorani
Some
of the salient features of this temple are,…..The
temple is facing east with balipeedam and a Rishabam under a mandapam. Entrance
to temple is from back side. Stucco image of Uma Maheswarar is on the top of
the mukha mandapam. The original moolavar is in the sanctum. Vinayagar, Murugan
Stucco Dwarapalakas are at the entrance of ardha mandapam. In Koshtam Vinayagar,
Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, Brahma and Durgai.
In
Prakaram Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Chandikeswarar, Bhairavar
and Navagrahas. Ambal is in a separate sannidhi facing south.
ARCHITECTUREThe
Temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, Ardha mandapam and mukha mandapam. An
ekathala vesara vimanam is on the sanctum sanctorum. This present temple with
bricks was built on old adhishtanam during recent years. Stucco images of
Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu and Brahma are on the greeva koshtam.
Apart
from main sanctum all the parivara shrines
are also reconstructed.
HISTORY
AND INSCRIPTIONSIt
is believed that the temple belongs to 16th to 17th
Century, Vijayanagara nayakas period. Inscriptions are also found on the
adhistanam.
A
Pallava King Nrupatungavarman’s inscription (SII Vol 12. 77 ) on a boulder near
the temple records the endowment of food
offering to the God of the temple, for which a land was gifted. The inscription
didn’t mentioned this temple’s Lords Name. If it mentioned Lord Shiva of this
temple, then this temple might belongs to 9th Century. The original inscription reads as …- ஸ்வத்திஸ்ரீ

boon, and bumper Harvest.

AND CELEBRATIONSApart
from oru kala Pooja, special poojas are conducted on Pradosham, Maha shivaratri,
Navaratri, Vinayagar Chaturthi, Arudra darshan, new year, Thai Pongal and on all
important festival days.

TO REACHThis
place Peranakavur is 8 KM from Salavakkam, 14 KM from Salavakkam Koot Road, 13
KM from Chengalpattu, 27 KM from Uthiramerur, 42 KM from Tambaram and 69 KM
from Chennai. Nearest
Railway station is Chengalpattu.
A Shiva Linga baanam is found installed in front of a Perumal Temple. Since the above inscription didn't mentioned the God's name, there may be another Shiva Temple and the inscription may belongs to that temple.
