This Sri Kubera Lingeswarar Temple at Sundara Chozhapuram, in Thiruverkadu, is one of the Ashta Lingas around Thiruverkadu,
Sri Vedapureeswarar Temple, ie Eight Shiva temples in eight directions of Sri
Vedapureeswarar Temple and this temple is on the North direction. This
Ashtalingam Shiva Temple is also on the banks of Holy River Cooum.

Some of the salient features of this temple are…
The temple faces east with an entrance arch on the east
side. Dwajasthambam ( covering to be done ), balipeedam, and Rishabam are in
front of the open Mukha mandapam. Dwarapalakas are at the entrance of sanctum
Sanctorum. Moolavar is a little big on a round avudayar. In koshtam, Vinayagar,
Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, Brahma and Durgai.
In praharam Vinayagar, Nagars, Sri Valli Devasena
Subramaniar, Chandikeswarar, Ayyappan, Kuberan, Natarajar, Bairavar, Navagrahas
Ambal is in a separate sannidhi facing South. Dwarapalakis
are on both sides of the sanctum sanctorum. Ambal is in standing posture with
abhaya varada hastam.

ARCHITECTURE
The whole temple was constructed with bricks and cement
concrete. The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, ardha mandapam, and an open
mukha mandapam. A two tier vesara Vimanam is on the sanctum sanctorum. The
sanctum sanctorum is on a pada banda adhistanam with jagathy, threepatta
kumudam, and pattika. The prastaram consists of valapi and kapotam with nasi
kudus. Stucco images of Shiva, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, and Brahma are on
the tala and greeva koshtams. The sigaram is of vesara style.
Navagraha mandapam was built beautifully with a stucco image
of Suryan riding on the horses.
HISTORY AND
INSCRIPTIONS
It is believed that the original temple may be more than
1000 years old. The present structure may belong to the 20th century.
Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted in 2023.
The installation of Kodimaram / dwajasthambam is in progress.

It is also believed that this is one of the 108
Shiva Lingas installed and worshiped by Agasthiyar in Thondai Nadu.
During the celestial wedding of Lord Shiva with Parvati,
all the Devas, sages, maharishis, and Munis assembled at Mount Kailash. So the
earth on the north went down and the south rose up. Seeing this Lord Shiva asked
Agasthiyar to go south to balance the earth. On the way to Podhigai Hill
Agasthiyar installed and worshiped Shiva Lingas in various places. After
installing a Shiva Linga at Thiruverkadu, the sage Agathiyar prayed to Lord Shiva
for the darshan of Lord Shiva with Parvati’s Kalyana / marriage kolam.
Immediately Lord Shiva gave darshan to Agasthiyar in Kalyana Kolam. When
Parvati asked what will Lord Shiva do if an ordinary devotee wished to see
him...?. Lord Shiva immediately manifested himself in the form of Shiva
Lingas in the eight directions around Thiruverkadu,
Sri Vedapureeswarar temple.

Some
Devotees believe that the Sri Pasupatheeswarar Temple on the erikarai Shiva Lingam is the Esanya Lingam and not the one in the midst of the kazhani /field. Hence the details of both the temples are in separate posts.
